I'll always cut Lucas a little slack for the prequels because from the jump he didn't want to direct them himself. If anything it's all Stephen Spielberg and Ron Howard's fault, they convinced him he had to do it himself.
I am radicalised on the prequels now I think they're the best part of the trilogy.

I predicted the prequels would eventually go through a re-examination and what I said then, four years ago, was that when this happened it would be time to begin The Harvest

I've come totally around on the Battle Droids and think they are neat now. This is mostly due to the Clone Wars cartoon and painting models of them for the Legion table top game.
battle droids are good mooks to just effortlessly mow through. I don't need them C3POing, though

visually they're neat
conceptually they don't make a lot of sense to me, because they're so plainly not a credible threat, but a lot of the prequel stuff doesn't work if there are no stakes

Were stormtroopers ever a credible threat to anyone with an actual name?

The prequels are a super interesting plot not told very well.
The sequel trilogy is the complete opposite.
It's me, Karl. The man with the hottest of hot takes.

A lot of the “stormtroopers can’t aim” jokes forget that they were trying to miss the heroes on the Death Star

They wipe the floor with the rebels in ESB and in RotJ they are luring them into a trap.

The prequels are really interesting to talk about, but anyone who claims that they are good movies to watch has forgotten how much screen time Jar Jar gets. And he's not better than you remember. He's so much worse.

Absolutely.
I've watched one of those supercuts of the prequels on YouTube.
That film started with the final duel in the phantom menace.

I don’t know of a story where the antagonist(s) have an army of faceless minions and those minions are a threat to the protagonist(s).
More often than not, it’s the numbers that are the issue and not the skill of the minion and even then the numbers might count for nothing.
It’s less of an issue with Star Wars and more of just how people have been writing it this way.

Right. Which is why, going back to the start of this sub-thread, it's IMO dubious to say that battle droids are somehow worse or even at all unusual in this regard.

The droids are never shown to be competent or really threatening.
The very first thing with Stormtroopers is them blasting a bunch of rebels then TKOing Leia with blue rings.
The narrative continues and they murder the Jawas and the homestead offscreen.
They have at least the Veneer of a threat.
The droids.
Don’t.

The droids gun down quite a few jedi during AOTC, in the Battle of Geonosis.

The droid fighters and super droids were pretty cool too.
Basically the whole droid army idea really crystallized whenever someone went "why don't we build a blaster rifle into the droid or a droid into the vehicle?" And I really wish there were more droid units like that.

Prepare to not be ok.

I am glad we agree.
Though I am curious how the prequels under Ron Howard look. I thought Solo was ... fine but I like some of his flicks a great deal.
there are moments in which you can see what Solo was supposed to be and it's a really interesting movie
I'm not sure how much of that is Howard or the Lego movie guys, but the resulting film is undeniably a mess
I will say though that the basic idea there was pretty heavily flawed, the movie really needed to make a case for itself, and didn't
If every important thing to happen to Han didn't happen over the course of a long weekend, I think I'd enjoy it more.

Both great actors, but bring completely difference performances to the table and I desperately want to see what came of that

Watching Infinity War and Solo in the same month gave me such whiplash on Bettany.
In Solo he is having so much fun that it is a goodamn crime that he has to be so lifeless in avengers movies.
