the prequels are not good but they're enjoyable movies for children and I think that serves some level of importance in the absence of them being good films

it doesn't redeem them but there's people that grew up watching those movies and love star wars because of them now, and that's ok

I mean I was in the 6th/7th grade when episode 1 came out.

I thought jar jar was dogshit but big sword fight go swoosh so it was cool.

Yeah, like this worse than the prequels. More slick cinematography and acting aside.

it's absolutely 100% worse than revenge of the sith, I was certain of that the moment I left the theater

I still think aotc is way more boring, and significantly worse dialogue, but it's also got some cool visuals and is a much more earnest movie, at least, which I respect

they're pretty close and which one I dislike less is probably going to be based on which one I've seen more recently

phantom menace is still the worst but I did have to think about it

yeah exactly, they serve as an entry point and have spectacle and when you're a kid you can kind of largely wash away bad plot points

as an adult now I don't really want to ever watch those movies (I still do, I'm just not happy about it), but as a kid? scooped those up.

except attack of the clones, i walked out of the theatre and complained to my dad that there wasn't enough "cool fighting" in that movie, a point that in hindsight was me being bored with the romance plot as a child. god bless young mike

Hi, my name is Establishing Shot. Me and JJ Abrams have never met.

You say that, but if you go back you'll notice that every single time a character is on a new planet, they're next to their spaceship, just in case you were wondering how they got there.

As an Original Fan, I hoped/wanted/expected both "new" trilogies to be better than they turned out to be.
The first movie was fun, if not very deep, and gave me hope. The second was where the wheels started to come off. And the third... was just a mess, with all the worst excesses of the director on full display.
I went into both Episode III and IX with very similar feelings of "it's my duty to see this through" and left feeling tired, disappointed, and "well, that's finally over."

    visually they're neat

conceptually they don't make a lot of sense to me, because they're so plainly not a credible threat, but a lot of the prequel stuff doesn't work if there are no stakes

Were stormtroopers ever a credible threat to anyone with an actual name?

“Only Imperial stormtroopers are so precise”

A lot of the “stormtroopers can’t aim” jokes forget that they were trying to miss the heroes on the Death Star

What's the excuse for ESB and RotJ?

One of the Emperor's best legion manages to nick Leia in the arm. Ooooh.

That the movies have a pulp/action movie ascetic and nerds gotta ruin everything.

I honestly don’t think that anyone has ever actually had their enjoyment of the film harmed by the Stormtroopers lack of bite.

The Rise of Skywalker continues to be so weirdly bad. It actively hurts and limits story telling in the franchise. I honestly still can't believe that some of the decisions were signed off on it.

I went on my first date to the Phantom Menace in 8th grade.

Convinced my date to kiss me everyone something died on screen, and then we made out during the last 30 minutes because droids counted.

I was the horniest 8th grader

As far as cool droids go, I also thought the Magnaguards in episode 3 were a pretty nice mini-boss fight.

They were alright. Like most things in ep 3 though, they were worse than the version from the Tartakovsky Clone Wars

Another random little thing I noticed is that JJ really likes having kylo have fights in a wood. Twice in TFA and then again in a very similar looking one in tros.

Also got around to finish tros.

Having Luke only show up for that absolute stinker of a scene was so bad.

The big spaceship battle was very disappointing.

While Adam Driver is good at acting I think he's just not made for action scenes. Always awkward.

Poe's fighter has a slick paint scheme

Grats, Leia, your last action was to help put a sword into your son.
Although that seems to be the missing ingredient for a redemption, so I guess put more swords into fascists.

The movie wastes sooo much time with the wayfinder. I'm sure you could do an interesting national treasure star wars, but this is not it. Rey doesn't even use her scavenging skills to do anything in the wreckage.

I'm not sure what is the dumbest thing, but maz randomly handing a medal might be it.

Rise of Skywalker is a movie that gets worse the more you think about it.

I blame the "star wars fandom" for it. They were incredibly vocal about how much they didn't like the last jedi so the final movie was an attempt to placate them.

And what we got was a 4/10 version of dark empire crammed into 1 movie.

I don't know that I believe RoS was attempting to placate anyone

I think JJ Abrams just looked at the foundation that Rian Johnson built and said "no I don't want to do that, I want to make the sequel I would have made to my other movie"

Oh wait, Luke telling Rey to respect the lightsabre might be dumber than the medalin kind of an aggravating way, but the medal is more random lolwhat why. The dagger sits somewhere inbetween on this spectrum.

Is it time for our periodic reminder about how Rose Tico and Maz Kanata are barely fucking in Rise of Skywalker, and how I’ll be fucking furious about it for the rest of my natural life?

Fuckin’ sweet, man, I love this awful schtick.

    They did Rose dirty.

I will never forgive the fandom for how they treated Kelly Marie Tran

Kelly Marie Tran is better than Star Wars and I hope she got a pile of money so obscene that she never has to work a day in her life ever again.

I doubt she did, but that continues to be my hope.

I want to comment on how someone is discussing a rumour, because how they're discussing it is far more interesting than the actual rumour.

The rumour: Some people at Disney are planning to use a plot device from Rebels to create an oldschool DC-Style Crisis and erase the Sequel Trilogy from Canon.

The headline of the article discussing the rumour: "DISNEY RESETTING STAR WARS; ERASING LAST JEDI"

I just find it interesting that the article writers put so much focus on TLJ in its headline when if this rumour is true (which I doubt), the entire saga is on the chopping block.

I honestly don’t see why people hate this scene so much. Like, just about every thing about that movie sucks but the idea that a Luke that has come back around and stopped giving up would venerate the ancient weapon of the Jedi seems fine?

Because lightsaber worship in the prequels is one of the worst things introduced in them? Even in the prequels, Anakin and Obi-Wan are just tossed fresh sabers for the arena battle in 2, which is kind of low key crazy for a weapon you're supposed to forge yourself and have an intimate connection with. Did they just have a box of spares in the Temple somewhere? Did they rob some Jedi's grave for those?

Zori Bliss is functionally so unnecessary when you already have the established underworld connections of Maz.

So it becomes glaringly obvious that she exists to make sure you know Poe is into ladies

Even then, Poe could've been into Maz.

Zori does have a cool helmet though. Reminded me a bit of the more fanciful prequel design.

I feel like Star Wars Republic Commando made battle droids kinda scary. They took some slight artistic liberties and made em beffier and more alien.

The whole point of battle droids was that they were super cheap and easy to mass produce. They had limited functions and the idea was throw insane numbers of them at an enemy until you inevitably win. A jedi can block blaster shots from a couple of baddies but they can't block shots from like, 800 at once. The clones were more expensive to produce and had more limited numbers but were far more intelligent than droids so it kind of evened out. Although in every piece of media the clones primary battle strategy is "stand out in the open and shoot lasers lol" so, you know. Rule of Cool I guess?

Republic Commando made a point to show all the monsters as scarier than they seemed in the movies. It was a bold, cool move and I loved it.

I dunno I kind of like the idea of war atrocities as carried out by bumbling comedic battlebots, adds a certain frisson of stupidity to an otherwise dreary affair
