I believe my previous experience with NWN2 has helped my feelings on ME3.

Mask of the Betrayer is the best D&D video game ever produced. You really should give it a shot.

ME3 is good until the very, very end. Which is frustrating because I feel like the ending could be decent with really minimal changes, but oh well I guess I can just imagine the ending I want

ME3 has some of my favorite moments in the series... and also ALL of my least favorite moments. It's a land of contrasts. The multiplayer is the same. Genuinely fun, addictive to play, well supported... and the harbinger of the loot box plague. An indefensible example of pure greed, rewarded on a massive scale by people with no forethought.

Yeah, that you would let the terrible ending of NWN2 stop you from playing Mask of the Betrayer is practically a crime. It even undoes most of the damage of the NWN2 ending!
It takes place with the same character in the aftermath of NWN2's ending. All your NWN2 friends are gone, but you do eventually meet up with one and they clue you in on what actually happened to everybody. And of the ones you're most likely to care about, IIRC all the MotB endings include them.

I wholeheartedly recommend Mask of the Betrayer. Plus you get to play an epic-level D&D character, with all the hilarious brokenness that implies!

nwn 2 was too fucking long and and it used one of the worst D&D rulesets for videogames

it was also a buggy mess at launch

    it's probably Obsidian's weakest game

If you don't want to go whole hog into spirit-eating, it's quite easy to manage. You can Suppress the hunger each day to get most of your energy back, and you can almost immediately get a power that you can use against undead. That alone probably doubles the amount of enemies in-game that you can target, and doesn't come with any of the qualms that come with eating spirits.

    My NWN2 thoughts are:

    I enjoyed it much more than NWN1, but the ending (including the final battle) is the definition of bullshit;

    My vague memory is also that the spirit-eating thing in MotB never really clicked with me;

I really enjoyed in MotB that
Ammon Jerro came back, but it's also exceptionally weird that he's just completely unvoiced unlike everyone else.

Also, to this day when thinking about the DA2 DLC I often still go "Mask of the...uh...Mark of the Assassin."

The "Hold the line" score was certainly complex.

And honestly there was enough in there that a lot of people wound up fucking up at least one thing in the suicide mission. So it's okay in my book.

The thing that tripped me, and a lot of people, up was using Zaeed as the squad leader for part one

    Fuckin Zaeed

they already made me3 hard for them by making everyone killable so they have to write padok wiks et al, so a more difficult suicide mission would amount to a more even split between people who saw padok wiks and people who saw mordin

I'm surprised that a decade later there hasn't been a mod that radically altered the mission

I don't remember if I had Miranda as my biotic bubbler or not, but I absolutely lost Garrus to the swarm on my first run. And he was one of my best buds. But I resolved to stick with the outcome. I want to say that I also lost Jack and Samara on that run too, actually.

I went through the suicide squad mission with zero casualties and I didn't even think it was particularly difficult to suss out what they wanted. I also didn't find out that Wrex could die in ME1 for a while

I also lost Wrex on Virmire in my first run. Killed by Ashley, who soon after died herself. I don't think I did Wrex's "loyalty" mission which may have kept me from being able to talk him down.*

And now I remember the Suicide Mission for sure. I lost Jack, Garrus, and Samara. Jack died on the initial approach. Garrus got carried off by the seeker swarm. I think I may have actually had Samara as my biotic bubbler, but she wasn't loyal because I didn't do her mission.* I don't remember how she died exactly but it was one of those things where the game switched back to some characters and panned over her body.

*I didn't do those missions because I know I'm going to play these games more than once, so I often like to save content for future runs. ME definitely punished me for that, though.

I think on my first try I lost Mordin and...I don't know, maybe one other person? I'm not sure

I sent Mordin into the vents because I assumed a scientist would be smart enough to open a door, and I had Zaeed lead the other squad

I lost Mordin the first time because I sent Grunt with the crew, and the dude's too squishy. Whenever I get the urge to play through I keep Kasumi and Tali with me for the last bits and send Mordin back, thereby getting rid of the squishies or keeping them where I can see them.

I can't tell if I ended up accidentally perpetuating the cycle of organic-synthetic violence by sending Legion into the vents the first time, because A) I assumed a geth would be less susceptible to heat exhaustion, and B) I didn't want to risk Tali, because she was my romance option.

    So we started ME3.

First we spent all together too much time getting the game running on the Xbox 1. This isn't the first time I've played under backwards compatibility, but it seems the EA servers were being bullshitty. Then we spent some time touching up her custom face because it got some of the colors wrong, she'd had purple eyes previously and it made her hair super bright for some reason and it needed to be toned down a bit. She's still a Sentinel. Bonus power is warp ammo.

...And we're off. Welcome to Erf!

She's kind of excited about being on Earth but she's immediately questioning why Anderson is on Earth and back in uniform. If she picks up on the fact that she's in a detention facility she doesn't say anything about it, nor does she exhibit much reaction to the Reapers hitting Earth. She likes having Anderson in her squad though and enjoys the biotic explosions. Sentinel Shepard is a one woman combo-explosions machine carrying warp, overload, AND throw.

Of course we're introduced to vent kid. She tries being nice to vent kid but vent kid disappears like they always do. She notes that the kids lines aren't very good because kids don't talk like that, but does ask "where's the kid?" after it disappears. The sequence of fighting the cannibals while waiting for the Normandy to show up drags on way longer than I remember. Mostly because Andersons incendiary ammo preps them for explosions and throw has a short cooldown. There was a fair bit of standing around and waiting for new enemies to spawn. She was not happy about Anderson staying on Earth but was happy to see Ash on the Normandy. She also prefers the Alliance color scheme on the ship.

Oh yeah, when Anderson couldn't get through to Hackett she hoped he wasn't dead. She really came around on Hackett.

As soon as the kid shows up in the cutscene she goes "Oh, the kid is going to die then." And then the kid gets in a shuttle and dies. It reminds me of rookie DMs trying to make their murder hobo players feel bad by showing massacred monster younglings or something. Heavy-handed and not effective.

On the Normandy Vega starts in about Anderson staying and she's having none of it. She takes the lower option to tell him that Anderson knows the deal and Earth is fucked without help and immediately takes the Renegade prop to really set him in his place. She says that if the game wants her to romance him there's no way in hell that's happening.

We go to Mars and she enjoys the graphics. Cerberus shows up, Cerberus doesn't stick around long, and Ashley starts in on the "How can I trust you?" tour. This is an annoyance, but she wants Ash back on the squad so she resolves to be nice about it. Then Liara shows up and this makes her happier. Especially when Liaras Singularity power comes into play because she really likes it when the enemies float in the air. She likes it even more when she sees it primes biotic explosions. Then she LOVES the quick railing kill mechanic and wants to do that all the time. And the heavy melee attack.

There's not much for her to react to on this extended tutorial. She is wary about telling Liara that things aren't her fault because she doesn't want to romance Liara since she's back on the squad. She decides to be nice anyway.

She wants a shield like the Cerberus guardians have.

She gets a little confused during the conversation with TIM at the archives. She isn't sure if TIM is experimenting on his soldiers in order to control the Reapers, or what that has to do with the archives. She's worried the game is going to make her work with him again, or that she's going to agree to do it by picking the wrong dialogue options or something, but eventually figures out that's not what's going to happen. Because she imported her character she has enough Reputation to select either the Charm or the Intimidate option in this conversation. She goes with the red one, because she's having none of his shit.

Then we're off to the chase with the fembot and I get to be annoyed at the controls a bit every time they decide I want to dive and roll rather than climb the obstacle blocking my path. Still, we make it to the roof, Vega slams his shuttle into hers, and Ash gets her ass kicked by a robot. She actually goes "C'mon she can't die before we fix things!" This begins a rather long sequence where the player can't do anything and you can't save to pick it up later. I mention this because she was tired and ready to stop for the night but the game literally doesn't give you that option for an absurd amount of time.

And then we're off to the Normandy and flying away from Reapers and Mars, then we cut to the interior where we dump Ash in the medical bay, she wonders where the doctor is, then we go to talk to Hackett, then we talk to Liara, then we have the long cinematic of going flying into the Citadel, then docking at the Citadel, then coming off the Normandy onto the Citadel, then talking with Bailey before it finally gives control back.

Right as we saved she was all "Oh look, a Keeper walking. It's nice to see them do something."
