It's deeply frustrating that the House/Senate can't give enough of a fuck to prevent the massive wave of evictions coming, and it's also frustrating that there appears to be exactly one (1) congressperson trying to actively assist constituents in prepping for the extremely-preventable disaster.

It's cheaper and easier than what they used to do when I was young. Military recruiters going on high school campus to meet with students who just so happened to be turning 18.

Reminds me of when I was 18 and had zero clue what I wanted to do with my life and also had zero clue about anything related to politics, the military-industrial complex or american imperialism, so I signed up as interested for one of the various branches during a school job fair.

Fast forward to maybe half a year or so later where I'm trying the America's Army game out because, hey, it's free, and I happened to get the follow-up call from the recruiters. My brain immediate shot off some endorphins at the connection between "I'm playing the army game and I just got called by the Army, ain't that funny" so I basically gleefully went "OH HEY!" like I was super jazzed to hear from them, and the guy on the other end was like "Oh. Okay. I normally don't get reactions like that."

Must have been a massive disappointment when I turned him down, because at that point at least I realized I'd never make it through boot camp. "It's really not so bad" he tried to reassure me, but nah, ain't happening.

Yeah I was hugely depressed and directionless in my last year of high school, so I accepted a Marine recruiter's invitation to start going through the process of enlisting. Luckily I had a teacher looking out for me. He pulled me out of another class one day to talk me out of joining, including going over the details of an injury he received during peace time when he was enlisted (as a sort of "this could happen to you" thing). Even had photos (it wasn't super graphic or gory). The thing he hit me with that ultimately had me dead to rights though was when he flatly said I have a problem with authority and wouldn't last one day in basic training as a result. "Get your shit together."

For context, this was JUST PRIOR to the war in Iraq starting, so even if I had managed to stick with the decision I probably would've been, I dunno, dead or injured severely or some shit.

My graduating class was only 63 people, back in '06.

Of the 28ish dudes, 20 of them joined the military right after graduation or in the fall after. A couple of the girls too.

Basically everyone I was friendly with from HS just disappeared in less than a year. Recruiters fucking preyed on that place like damn wolves.

    @Ataxrxes

Hi! The majority of my advocacy is direct person-to-person work. Here are a few things from my experience that helps.

First thing is that it does take time. I have found that deluging people with information will make them dig their heels in and not engage as much. You essentially need to drip feed them info over the course of a few weeks. You want to present yourself in the early stages as calm, objective, and rational.

I recommend starting off with clips of police brutality. I lean on the tyranny of the government angle. I will send them 2-3 clips and follow it up with comments like "wow! I can't believe the government is trampling on free speech like this!" or, “I’m concerned our government is stepping on our first amendments rights with this”. Funnily enough, talking about first amendment rights gets a lot of play in Australian and New Zealand right wing circles too!

Check out T. Greg Doucette @greg_doucette he has a twitter megathread going of clips. Robert Evans @IwriteOK is a journalist who also shares some good videos. Some of the family here who regularly re-broadcast important tweets may also have some suggestions.

I have also had success sharing videos the police murdering people as well. I recommend getting a mix of white and black victims for this if you're going to do it. The murder of Daniel Shaver is a very powerful one to share re: murder of white men. Police murder of mentally unwell/disabled people are useful, as it is harder to come back on them for not being angels. I like to add some comments with these videos like, "I dunno dude, it's pretty scary that our government allows our cops to be the judge, jury and executioner!" also stuff like, "It doesn't sit well with me that [whatever crime the victim is said to commit] is now a capital crime"

Again, I try to avoid getting too emotional in the early stages. People will often pull back when faced with uncomfortable emotions or confrontation.

You can drop them a few clips every few days or so. You'll then reach a decision point. If they are becoming upset/angry, use that emotion and follow them yourself. If they still seem withdrawn or unconvinced, keep with the objective/rational angle.

For emotional people, keep feeding them police brutality clips. Your message at this point becomes things like, "I can see why people are so goddamn angry. I'm not even involved and it's making me mad!" At this point, start talking about historical wrongs comitted against POCs. I highly recommend the podcast Reveal; they do investigative jpurnalsim and have several episodes on the suppresion of POCs throughout history. The podcasts Behind the Bastards and behind the police are really great starting points as well. Complement this with things like "I can't believe I never heard about this in school. I can see why people are still mad about this". It's important to protect their ego at this point, you don't want them to feel like they are responsible for the sins of their ancestors.

This is a tightrope because you don't want them to start thinking, "oh this all happened in the past we need to move on" but you also don't want them to feel like they are responsible or they will most likely withdraw.

For those that are not engaging emotionally, play up the economic angle. Stats on (the low) crime-solving rates and personal anecdotes about cops not turning up to calls are good for this. It’s about bang for the buck, and our tax dollars are not getting their value through government waste. You can also cite cop stories (plenty of these online) about having to do jobs (counsellors/parents/career advisors etc.) that they are not trained to do. It becomes about ‘getting smart’ with our spending. Investing money into specialists adequately trained for specific scenarios is useful to bring up.

I have heaps more to share but I’m pinched for time. I’ll try to come back tomorrow and update some more.

The last point, for now, is to say I’m successful about 75%-80% of the time. These are good odds, but you won’t convince everyone and don’t tear yourself up if it doesn’t work.

More power to you fam if you have the time and energy to affect change in your circle of influence. I believe it is important work

Edit: there is a subreddit called r/2020PoliceBrutality who have collated a lot of cases of police brutality if you are looking for resources

The House passed a $3 trillion bill back in May. McConnell is a horrible, terrible person and has blocked it from going anywhere.

The bill contained a $1200 stimulus for most people, COBRA subsidies, a special enrollment period in the ACA exchanges for people, and $175 billion in rent assistance, and extension of the $600 unemployment benefit until January. It did also contain provisions to help undocumented citizens financially, which is a big deal.

It could help more, and in a more targeted way, but it's not nothing and would prevent a lot of suffering, which is likely part of why McConnell is blocking it and Trump's threatened a veto.

I would be cautious sharing pictures and videos of people being actually literally for real murdered

Yes, it's happening, yes, it's horrible, yes, cops are literally lynching black people in broad daylight, in front of the whole world

But I can easily see the propagation of those videos being used to show Black people "this will happen to you"

Instagram was full of that very thing a few weeks ago

And the vast majority of the people sharing it were white people presenting just the videos of the lynchings without comment

I would suggest at the very least warning your audience before just dropping the real life live on camera lynchings

I posted in D&D but it seems like a bad place to post continuations of that? I dunno.

We had a shithead here in rural Vermont with a Nazi flag in his window. He decided that July 4th was the day to proudly display his patriotism or whatever the fuck. As a neighborhood, we talked, found his landlord's number, and flooded him with calls. The flag went down for a little while, but then we saw it was just in a different window. More calls, and it's down.

Tuesday we had a party, and the local paper came by to take pictures.

Policy here is put them in spoiler tags with content warnings. I think it's important that this info is out there, but it's also important to know that not everybody should have to see them without warning or choice.

Re: Robert Fueller, the LA Times article makes a reasonable case that it's not a coverup and really was a suicide. The investigation was done with federal oversight, Fueller had a history of schizophrenia and self-professed suicidal thoughts, the body supposedly didn't show signs of having been in a struggle, and the rope he was hung with matched one he bought himself from a hardware store a month before using his own card he was seen using in other stores on security camera footage later.

Now they just need to explain away the immediately previous hanging of a black man in that region, the event where they shot and killed Fueller's half-brother on the freeway, and the latino kid they shot to death five times in the back and tried to destroy the security camera evidence of afterwards.

This is enough evidence that I am willing to consider this possibility

But yes, the other killings remain, and the other public hangings that occurred around this time are going to require even more evidence for me to believe those were also "suicides"
