Vyolynce as you get better at the game you'll find the value of energy relics drops a decent amount. They, are, to be clear, INCREDIBLY powerful, and are usually the right choice.

But the negatives on them are all pretty nasty and you really have to weight your choices carefully.

What did you pass up for tiny house? That i'm curious on as tiny house is pretty universally awful. I need to go argue at the devs it needs Moar Buffs again =D (They dont agree with me ;.;)

If the run history records the choice I'll check it in the morning but IIRC it was Eye and maybe Ectoplasm.

And on that note: Another day, another notch on the ol' Spire belt. God this felt good after throwing myself against MT and getting super frustrated with it.
    C6D2C7EA4CEF1BB42D820F77338139215A8FCD9F

This one was hell to beat the heart with. Lost a good chunk of hp to the bloody elites thanks to a not great draw, and then oof, my draws vs the heart were awful too.

I actually had to give up on a first turn Catalyst just so i could survive everything via drawing enough. Literally wouldnt have been able to win without Pocketwatch. In retrospect i'm not sure i made the right choice with my energy relic (My other choices were the no potions or no upgrades, and i dont think i won with either of those... but woof. Hard choice!)

Not knowing what you had at the time, i would have windmill slammed Snecko Eye. It's so so strong, and on Watcher it's just insane. Thoguh if you had a lot of 0 costs already, then yeah, would have sucked. This is why i generally dont lean into costs in act 1 without a good reason. Like, having Fasting is a reason to start picking up Just Luckies, or Prostrate+ from toxic egg are worth it, but outside of that they just hurt too much if you end up taking Snecko Eye - and Snecko Eye is so, so strong it's nearly always the correct choice to take it after act 1.

(taking it after act 2 can be correct, but by that point you often have more of a gameplan, and snecko eye can really fuck that up if you're say, using 1 costs and shivs + nunchaku, or Concentrate+ with Spinning top or similar gameplans)

Sounds like a smart choice then.

    Also: Still got it.
    4C56C67EBD44F87E453505A5EBDB4912A9310B89

Pretty classic Fasting Pellets deck, though with the spice of Necronomicon'd Wallops

Also also: This has been a reasonble and fair act 1 so far, mhmmmmm.

If i loose a run that's started like this, i'm going to be Very Annoyed. 5 elites in act 1 without Wing boots, because that's a fair stunt to pull. Oh, and wish, courier and membership card because... why not.

Ahahaha, yep, i did not loose that run.

Final score: 3766. 41 relics. 6 perfect elites. 4 perfect bosses, including the heart.
    FBB147FDD2EAE3391A0694471C03B6AB8E1B87DC

The act 4 store had me buy: Dead Branch, Toy Ornithopter, Pen Nib, Ginger, Vajra, Incense Burner, Bag of Preparation, Strawberry, Art of War and a strike remove.

    Which seems totally reasonable.

    What's that you say?

Awoken hoses power builds you say. Mark of the bloom is bad on a20 you say! Four energy is mandatory you say!?

    Hmmm.

    HMMM.
    E6FEFAE24037CC0B8289B12A424B81DD5A2B6A8D

No, i think you're wrong, and i am therefore right.

This was a very silly run. it struggled a lot early and scraped through super narrowly a couple of times, even after it got mummified hand. But then it got Fosslized Helix, and things started to click together... and by the end of the game, i'd perfected 4 bosses, only loosing hp to the heart. Which included awoken one! More like awoken punk, amirite?

Awoken One still cannot deal with hyper-scaling power decks, and this deck hyper-scaled like crazy. Mark of the bloom scored me 14 upgrades, which in a 30 card deck seemed like a Very Good Number, and pushed the deck way over the top. I never lost hp after that till the Heart.

Today's daily run is bonkers in a really fun way. Watcher, start with a relic. Ok, sure. Two cards to pick from, ouch. You get two bonus cards for each you pick HELLO

Grabbed Tantrum early then leanded into the zero costs and card draw. A lot of fights went tantrum>seven zero cost cards>go into Calm>3 zero cost cards>tantrum>3 zero cost cards>go into Calm>3 zero cost cards. On T1.

I think about half the fights the opponent didn't even get to go. Only thing that really gave me trouble was the Nemesis. I took out the Shapes in ~3 turns after a 240 damage T1

Has anyone here tried Pirate Outlaws yet? I picked it up for $0.99 and gave it a try. It’s very much a Slay the Spire clone with a pirate theme. Looks to be a lot of grinding for gold and fame, which are used to unlock new characters, levels, and items.

The concepts and mechanics look pretty fun. I’ll check back in with a more detailed review later as I get more games under my belt.

Havent heard of it, @MNC Dover

I'll keep an eye out, but i'm feeling pretty burned after bloody Monster Train. So close and yet so far.

Meanwhile? Who's a badass? THIS PENGUIN.
    5431D2D4ECDA2585526BA993A33472537F564E54D82D1B63F210E668918D9A97C8D4FE4C0A4A3683

That's right, A20 heart kill using Brimstone.

Only reason i won this run was Astrolabe. It transformed 2 strikes and a defend into... Immolate+ (who cares), Infernal Blade+ (eh.)... and Feed+.

    Hullllllo.

Given i took 279 damage in the heart fight, i needed every drop of max hp i managed to wring out of Act 3. I started act 3 with 75 max hp, by the time i got to the heart i had 131. So you know, casually nearly doubled my Max hp in a single act, that's pretty good.

Otherwise, it was just a lot of dual wield reaper abuse against the heart, interwoven with immense sword boomerangs to rip up it's hp as fast as possible. 9 turn kill, and if i didn't kill i would have lost - no way to survive a 15x15 multi attack.

Reptomancer actually nearly ended the run, but i'd been sitting on a fairy in a bottle for most of the game. tactical suicide vs the time eater? Dont mind if i dooooo! Que beating the time eater to death and devouring large nummy chunks of it. Tasty delicious timeslug.

Not gonna lie: starting with Ectoplasm didn't give me high hopes for this run. Threw 50 gold at the Cleric in the first room to eat a Defend, then stumbled into a chest with Dead Branch. Beat up some slimes, then traded a potion for Bronze Scales. Next room was the Goblin Nob who gave me Singing Bowl. Well, there's a plan... Keep the deck slim (and HP high), focus on cards that exhaust. Everything else mostly fell into place; aced Boss Slime and Bronze Automaton*, then was on the ropes against Awakened One before I was able to stabilize and got there.

*It offered me Sozu, Slaver's Collar, and Philosopher's Stone. At that point I just wanted the energy without getting my ass kicked so I figured I could run Act 3 without potions.

A friend has been playing this on our group chat dischord so that got me to fire it up again. I was apparently in the middle of a run where it seemed i didn't know that you could refuse to take card rewards and lost to the act 3 boss.

I forgot how fun this game was though I am still not very good with it, I am now more familiar with deckbuilding games in general so it's been smoother this time lol.

Question: I have the windows blue light filtering night light setting enabled but every time I exit this game it disables it. Does anyone know what's going on there? It's oddly specific to this game

follow up to yesterday, I just won my first game! I hit a mid act 3 ? that teleported me straight to the boss and I felt like my deck was bad the whole time but if it works it works. I just kept finding relics and had 2 of the transform 3 cards and upgrade them which gave me weird things each time and maybe it's not right to do that but it turns out just a little bit of synergy and powers ran away with it.

How many times did I Turn 1 one-shot the room with Omni -> Omni -> Indignation -> Ragnarok? Too many... and yet, not enough.

I think... i think that is my all time worst astrolabe.

    2x Hullo World+ AND a Boot Sequence+

In a deck that already has Boot Sequence, and who's only card draw is Compile Driver and Sweeping beam. so, starting with 4 innates! 4 shitty innates.

Edit: Well, it's late act 2, i'm still alive, and 3rd card just got turned into a Boot Sequence. This was enough to end the run. Innates! Too many is bad, who knew?

Lol no. Edit: they could do OK if there were no meme cards or the game gave you an OP deck. But like... expect every shiv card to be taken

Edit2: and they still couldn’t play the actual game portion. No chat has the ability to count like is necessary for the game

But I am struggling with the robot guy. I feel like the orbs are harder to wrap my head around.

So, super quick breakdown of each class:

The Ironclad: great offense, some great scaling, some great defense. sucks at doing both in the same turn.
The Silent: Poison is broken as hell. Queen of defense. Sucks at frontloading her damage
The Defect: Lord of scaling. Has the best powers and best ways to scale, but resultingly, struggles to setup.
The Watcher: Queen of offensive oompf. Good at blowing everything up in a couple of turns, often struggles in longer fights where that wont work.

For defect: The trick is figuring out how to deploy defect's scaling as fast as possible, as safely as possible. When you've got frost orbs setup and Loop is procing multiple times, you're unspottable. And creative ai storm defect can just go "Hi, the fights over". Even against the boss that supposedly Hoses defect.

Things that are worth looking into for Defect: Snecko Eye, Echo Form, Creative Ai, Glacier, Biased Cog (Better with Orange Pellets or Clockwork Souvienor, shop relics), Defrag, that one uncommon that permantly increases in defense every time you play it. Ball lighting is an amazing early game card. All For One is secrelty busted when played with Snecko Eye (AfO only cares about the cards costing 0, no matter how they ended up like that. Do the math)

Snecko Eye + Echo Form And/or Creative Ai is one of the most broken relic/card combos in the game (Snecko draws it fast, and the cost randomization makes it easier to get into play. both are good things)

Genetic Algorithm (gain block every time its played).

Steam | Nintendo ID: Naphtali | Wish List
  • The Zombie PenguinThe Zombie Penguin Eternal Hungry Corpse Registered User regular
    That's the one. Thanks!

A good note on that, and any cards like it that permanently gain stats across a run: If you duplicate them they will gain the stats twice.

This does mean Genetic Algorithm can get up to some crazy numbers pretty fast. Or y ou can double-cast ritual dagger so the first hit ensures the second hit is lethal, and still get the reward.

The other big tip for this game is dont care about archtypes.

Pick cards because they a: help you beat the next floor, or b: help you beat a later challenge.

This does, admittedly, take time to build up the knowledge base, but it's by far the best way to play the game. You can make nearly any cobbled together thing work in this game as long as you have enough scaling (offensively and defensively), and there are So Many Damn Ways to get that scaling.

    Also, kill elites.

    no, more than that.

    No, more than that.

Elites are bar none the best value/floor you can get. Campfires (upgrades are REALLY good) and shops are about equal depending on needs, events can be more or less valuable than campfires or shops, and normal fights are the worst, This can and does change if you've got certain relics (black star makes elites even better, Prayer Wheel + Singing Bowl makes normal floors really good, Meal Tickes make shops a free rest, Fusion Hammer makes campfires worse etc)

Dont be afraid to throw runs away to see what happens, either. Also, if you're frustrated in a fight, or made a missplay - you can exit to the main menu and start the fight from teh beinging again. great when you click the wrong damn card.

I introduced my brother to the game, and he was having a hell of a time getting his first win with Ironclad. Must have been 15 tries in a row.

I told him to fight elites, and he won with Ironclad and Defect the next day.

  • The Zombie PenguinThe Zombie Penguin Eternal Hungry Corpse Registered User regular
Yeah elites are so good. In act 1 there's very little reason to not fight them - watcher is so good because she can obliterate all 3 act 1 elites and thus snowball hard.

Act 2 and act 3 elites are much more likely to end you (remember when reptomancer was just a hallway fight!?) But it still pays off if you can make it work.

For those unaware: ontop of always giving a relic and gold (I can't remember if they have a garunteeded potion drop too), elites have a flat 10% increase chance for you to see a rare card on the reward screen

Given how big a deal rares are, this is huge and can spike your decks power massively. Even in the worst case scenarios a rare is potential fodder for the pyre event (feeding a rare to it scores you a full heal and ten extra max hp)

Elites don't have additional potion chances, they share the same potion chance as hallways fights AFAIK (starts at 40% drop chance per act, goes up by +10% every time you don't see a potion and goes down -10% when you get one)

When you have Snecko Eye, every path is a good path.

Moer seriously, i got snecko and i think my first two drafts were Wheel Kick -> Whallop, so... you know.

Pretty sure i've done more than 10 elites in a run fairly often, too. Act 2 was actually pretty awful on the elite hunting, only 2 there...

Yep, i usually get about 8-9 elites in my runs, checking, not counting act 4. The best i can find at quick glance is 5 act 1, 4 in act 2, 3 in act 3

Picked this up recently when it went on sale. Been maybe a month and it really sucks up my free time. I was trying to play the classes evenly and march them up the ascension together, but there is something about the ironclad that keeps drawing me back and I'm outpacing the others by a lot.

I wish I could try some of the synergies that I see in the cards, but I only seem to get complimentary cards after I've compromised my deck. Once, I had a pure blizzard deck that was just perfect for my ocd, like I had hand crafted the entire thing. Usually the entire first act goes by before I get offered 2 cards that support a theme.
