I changed the order to the s series set and got a size 2 brush since the set didn't come with it. Thanks for the advice on this, I have an impulse to go deep with stuff so I'm glad I was able to cancel the order and setup a new one.

I'll look into make up brushes and maybe grab some on amazon while I search for a dremel. Is there a certain kind of make up brush I should buy or just any will work?

This set has more brushes than you'll need unless you're drybrushing vehicles with the large ones, but it's ten bucks and comes with a ton of brushes.

The medium and small brushes are what you'll mostly end up using, they match the ones I have and they work very well.

Though I am curious about what everyone uses for a dry brush. I have the medium and large dry brush from GW but I'm honestly not much of a fan of them, the medium went kind of bad fast but that could also be 100% due to me not really taking care of my brushes beyond rinsing them in water and storing them bristle point up.

GW, back in the day of the all blue citadel handles, so like, late 90s- 00s, had an amazing super small drybrush. I've pretty much worn mine down to a few bristles because there doesn't seem to be anything like it out there anymore.

I've built up a ridiculous number of brushes over the years, especially since when push comes to shove, you really only need two or three. I think I used five or six on the dreads I posted a few pages back, a 'large' one for laying down the main colors, a fine brush or details, edging, the fiddlier stuff. A really fine one for the super small stuff, like lenses on the helmets. A brush that I really like using for washes, a drybrush, the one I keep super clean and only use when working with clear paint and varnishes so that no random pigment stains things, especially when working with decals.

I generally just buy a cheap set of craft brushes from wherever for broad not specific projects like home made terrain, then when the brushes get fucked up, cut them so they are short bristled like a drybrush.

But that makeup brush set looks awesome, I am going to have to grab that.

Of course it is. (Isopropyl, I assume.)

Any materials I shouldn't use as a container? I've got an old plastic jar, #1 PETE body and #5 PP lid that I could use.

Glass is certainly preferable. You might want to test any other plastics with a little bit for a few days before committing a large amount.
The other thing would be to make sure you don't soak any parts that have rubber in them. See about removing the bit where the hose connects - there should be an O-ring in there you don't want submerged, and paint shouldn't have gotten into that area anyway.

  • pardzhpardzh Registered User regular
Glass is best for organic solvents but weak stuff like isopropanol won't be able to melt polymerized plastic

Also got 1 of each of the paints that released with Indomitus and I'm looking forward to using the tesseract glow paint.

With Indomitus coming out and all the super clean paintjobs I've seen people posting online, I kinda wanted to clean up my grimy space wolves for this "generation" of primaris.

I've gotten a pretty close shade of grey to my stock paintscheme by airbrushing a blue wash rather than fucking the whole model up with an oil wash, but I just don't know about the orange shoulder pad

I think it was McGibs who'd mentioned a tone like that being too bright for such a muted color scheme.

I may be better off just leaving the orange out and sticking to a cleaner overall scheme by skipping the oil and airbrushing blue over the greys (oil washed aggressors in pic for reference). Don't mind his left leg... I oversprayed some white/orange ink when I was doing the should and am glazing it back to blue-grey right now.

I like the orange but not so hot on the fade into yellow against the silver trim. It makes me notice the yellow more than the orange.

The brighter yellow where the shadows should be makes it look like it's made out of amber which is rad.

But on a Wolf Wolf I don't think that works. If that were an Eldar holy shit. Or if you could replicate that look on the vial and wrist ... thingy .. screen instead.

Agreed, without the orange shoulder pad the whole army would look too washed out and lose its character. Looking more like an army like Imperial Guard and losing out on the Elite Specialists look of Space Wolves.

I think if you add the wolf logo to the pad it'll break up the orange a little and look better, but that model definitely pops more than the ones without orange

I like the orange, and I also think grimy space wolves are a million times cooler than clean space wolves.
Some armies work with super polished paint schemes but imo wolves should look like they've been through hell just getting to the battlefield

    Thanks for the feedback guys

The amber look was an interesting accident... I masked the model with silly putty, airbrushed white ink and then airbrushed a new yellow-orange azo ink but it came out almost canary yellow. The orange was from another layer of yellow contrast on top.

Now I need to find a way to get that orange color with only one or two steps

I've seen a few people on Reddit use crackle paint directly on models with some cool results.

The two that come to mind were a squig that looked like it had burst out of the ground and a troll with crackle paint that made it look like it's shoulders and upper body were actually made of stone

Add some perixide like 3/1 ratio alcohol to peroxide, did this on an old metal orc with caked layers of Paine and removed everything except the deepest recess.

Start with a white undercoat, block in your colours, hit it with some varnish and go to town with an oil wash. Or several, in matching hues but darker tones. Then you can remove the excess relatively easily so as not to affect the mid tones too much. Varnish again to lock in the oils and highlight from there.
