Toys seem to be able to instinctively tell at a glance whether something is sentient or not.

Woody is seen writing on a pad that is definitely a toy and has been played with but the notepad is not alive.

Does a toy modeled after a real thing acquire the traits of that thing? The green army men were familiar with army tactics, despite never being in the army. Or did Andy imprint his understanding of army tactics on them?

    Are toys just Primals?

Obviously they can; that would be an absurd limitation.

The real question is...would a knockoff Buzz Lightyear inherit the same factory-preset personality that an authentic one would, or a slightly-off approximation of it, or would it just be a blank slate?

    Yes.
Woody felt pain when Stinky Pete ripped his arm.
Parts that are meant to come apart don't generate pain though.

It would inherit the knocked-off version of it.
So if the backstory is hideously warped on the box, so too is the personality.

it wasn’t the pain, it was the stark and unavoidable realization that he is indeed a toy and not the real ass buzz lightyear

I posit they can’t feel pain traditionally, like we humans do. They feel something akin to it, certainly, but it’s far more psychological

For example, when Woody's arm was ripped by Stinky Pete I figure it was less pain and more a feeling of loosing all sensation and function in his arm as a result.

but how little making is required

is a ball and stick a Toy

I think it's some combination of making and anthropomorphizing on behalf of the child/children

If an object is "brought" to life through play then it really comes to life. For instance, Bopeep ISN'T a toy, she's a lamp, but she was played with like a toy and that gave her life

If you're just playing with a ball and stick then they're just a ball and stick. If you are imagining that the ball and stick have personalities, they become toys

So a bat or at least the ball is a Toy.

but this just proves Speed's point. That's not a normal hockey puck, that's a hockey puck with arms and legs. It's anthropormorphized in a way that a bat or a ball would not be.

BUT if a child took a normal puck and began playing with it in anthro manner....would it pull a forky? If so would it long only to be slapped across ice the same way forky desires naught but the sweet embrace of the bin? Would the soul possess the puck but be unable to move or speak with no limbs, eyes, or mouth, just the terror of a being that can feel and want, but can do nothing for either.

It is worth remembering that Andy gets battleship for his birthday and the toys show relief over it, and are shown later playing the game, which does not move or express itself in any way, implying that even though it's played with by a child it doesn't qualify as a "toy"

We do see toys that are still in-packaging as having Toyness before they have the opportunity to be physically handled by children though

So now we're entering into territory where we have to ask if it requires a Child to imagine them as having play, or if the adults making them being conscious of them being toys also provides the spark

It's the kids for sure. Or more specifically, their avarice.

I thought this at first, but Rex notes his origins, where he was built, etc. They seem to have some sort of imbued knowledge about their creation, which they wouldn't have if it was awoken after being desired.

The really interesting Toy Story question is about the People Who Know. I'm not talking like Sid, who might be in denial to this day. But, you know, adults with nannycams or security systems and have seen everything. Some must have accepted the truth. Maybe they even confronted the toys, showed them the video evidence, but agreed to keep the toys' secrets as long as it makes their kids happy?

You know what? Nanowrimo's cancelled on account of the world is stupid.

I will have you know that this whole thread is making me think of a short film some local theatre company put together back in June that used the audio of a scene from Toy Story and stop motion footage of the artist's sex toy collection

It was very good but also seems to have been removed from YouTube

What if a kid plays with their food?
I can go to IHOP and get a pancake with a smiley face drawn on it. Does it become a toy if a kid plays with it?
Does it stop being a toy when the kid finally decides to sit down and eat the pancake?

Children are small monstrous gods. They know not the life they create, nor how the toys strive to give back joy to their unassuming creator.

For most instances of that, the child would be actively playing with the food.

Now we know that living toys generally just ragdoll when a child is playing with them, but we also know that they frequently function in mimicry of how they are played with.

What I'm suggesting is that the quickening or ensoulment of a toy is something that happens after a child begins to play with it, as a result of that play. Essentially the lifeforce of a toy is a work of inertia - a toy, when played with, will attempt to continue the life that it was given while it was being played with.

Therefore, a child playing with their food would be beginning the quickening process, but by not ever leaving the emerging toy alone, it's never given true life before being consumed.

So in this case should the pancacke become sentient its only driving want and purpose will be to have you eat it. Its a win win I guess.
