Invading Normandy wasn't for a fun excuse to drink too much and eat unhealthy food instead of doing yardwork, though...

Also Coronavirus isn’t a fucking foreign army that you beat with gumption and steadfastness. It’s a moronic analogy all around.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
I understand nfl players, they have a salery theyre getting and its their livelihood. But a college player? No way id play a down this season if i had the option.
Sports shouldnt happen this year and fuck you president dumbass.
Lots of old white dudes who will be safely away from getting covid are telling young men they will be safe. God damn this country sometimes.
Rich old white dudes love watching young men get brain damage for a slice of a billion dollar industry. A pandemic? Child's play. We really are back to the fucking gladiator/death-sport days.
Lou Holtz tells Fox News that college football needs to play amid coronavirus pandemic this fall: "Let's move on with our life! When they stormed Normandy, they knew there were going to be casualties -- there were going to be risks."
The author is a reporter for the Daily Beast.
That is an utterly disgusting equation, and Holtz is a monstrous goose for making it.
Yes, lets compare people playing a childrens game for our entertainment to the brave soldiers who gave their lives storming normandy during a world war. Totally the same.

One of the things that America is bad at teaching children about is that there are plenty of people (both in power and their suppoters) who believe all war is about national/religious/ethnic supremacy and that "stopping evil" is something only bleeding heart liberals (wrongly) care about
If you can remember that fact, it can recontextualize a lot of American (and global) history to make a lot more sense.
Tribalism allows for thinking that Hitler wasn't bad, he just played for the wrong team
So college football players and soldiers are both just fighting for the same arbitrary designation of "winner" and there's very little difference

By midday on Wednesday, the Atlantic Coast, Big 12 and Southeastern Conferences had all publicly broken with the Big Ten and Pac-12 and reinforced their ambitions to play beginning next month. The Big Ten and the Pac-12 concluded on Tuesday that it was simply too dangerous to try to play sports this fall.
“Reasonable people can disagree on it, and the Pac-12 and the Big Ten are seeing much of the same information that we’re seeing,” Bob Bowlsby, the Big 12 commissioner, said after his league released its football schedule on Wednesday morning. “But our board believes in our scientists and has come to a conclusion that’s different, and so have the leadership of the SEC and the A.C.C.”
Still, this was big news—and not just for those 10 Big 12 teams and their fans. It was a necessary threshold to reach for the Atlantic Coast and Southeastern conferences as well. If what had been described by sources as a “split” Big 12 stays the course, it means that a majority of the Power 5 is going forward—which was the assurance the ACC needed to stay in the fold.

Hopefully they realize you can't play chicken with a virus and call it off before training starts in groups. (I don't doubt any kid who has access to even marginally safe facilities has been getting pushed by coaches and some parents to get out there and get ready for the season.)
How many weeks do you think we get before they shit down too?
Do you think they double down and we get to real actual games or they end up with a dumpster fire and backpedal before the first kickoff?
I wish I could enjoy the schadenfreud sitting here Big10ly, but I'm really just tired and sad.
Hopefully when their university hospital leadership butts in and before anyone gets seriously ill.
Unlikely for UNC. The county health commission had to just outright leak communications with the University to get the word out that the school had ignored all of their recommendations.

Seems optimistic. The only thing might stop this is a bunch of positive COVID tests, and that's going to depend on these conferences putting together a plan (mandatory daily testing of everyone as opposed to only testing people who display symptoms or something like that) that prioritizes the safety of the students. Which seems unlikely since committing to playing this fall shows just how little they care about that.
Shut up, Mr. Burton! You were not brought upon this world to get it!
Baseball has smaller rosters, a sport that allows for more distancing while being played, more scheduling flexibility, and the assorted benefits of being a professional league. And it's still iffy on whether they can finish this season. They've weathered a few scares so far but the schedule's getting cramped as they do and it's clear that they can't keep everyone clean of the virus, so there will be more.
So how the fuck would college football, with bigger rosters full of 18-22 year olds that will be smashing into each other on a regular basis, stay safe? I'm just not seeing it.

The numbers only go up when you test. As long as you don't test, nobody gets sick!

Baseball is also traveling (no bubble) whereas the NBA and NHL are all in one controlled place
I think basketball is actually the most inherently dangerous sport- indoors, constant high activity level with players constantly in contact with each other- hockey has all that too but some of the players have face shields?
Anyway there’s probably ways to make it safe enough for a go, but colleges probably can’t do it, while MLB and the NFL are stupid as shit
Oh also colleges shouldn’t do it either because your risk tolerance for students is way lower than for pro athletes
Pro hockey the shields mostly cover the less relevant half of the face.

I'm not sure what sport would be the best/worst for inter-team transmission, but I think that's a relatively minor concern compared to the fact that locker rooms seem like a great way to guarantee intra-team transmission.

It feels like the "delay" stuff is just going to wind up to be waiting for students to come to campus, realizing the situation is untenable, and then cancelling. That's a huge variable that is going to change / is changing -- it's probably not too hard to keep 100 football players from catching COVID when they're in a college town that's deserted in the summer (Norman was like that at least). But once students come on campus and things start getting cancelled, the remaining conferences are going to look super dumb and wind up having to cancel.
The majority of the sports world has taken the strategy of just continuously kicking the can down the road, and this just feels like a last breath from the craziest 3 conferences.

And of course, yesterday's SEC tweet calling the Big Ten and Pac-12 pussies.
LOL. I believe in scientists too, Mr. Bowlsy (that's the name of the Big 12 commish, really?). I do not believe in everyone else listening to those scientists.
The Big 12 is run by idiots. They can't find two teams to add to the conference (that Texas would approve of) so they begged for an exemption to allow for a CCG with only ten teams because it was felt that the lack of one was preventing CFP consideration. (Which was likely true.)
This from a conference that hyped 'one true champion' and then proceeded to crown co-champions that very year. (The first year of the CFP when I had idiots trying to argue that OSU didn't deserve a slot because 'the Bug Ten sucks' and TCU/Baylor were better.)
They tried to entice Boise State to join because Idaho is a stone's throw from the Red River apparently but instead settled for West Virginia. This because A&M and Missouri bailed ASAP after UT was blessed with their own broadcast network.
The conference was close to ending up like the SWC when the Pac-12 attempted to entice UT and A&M (along with Colorado and Oklahoma) to join. But UT basically said no because being the big fish is important to them. (Then the SEC called...)
The only reason I can see that they are given such national consideration is they're in the south. As a conference they competed with the Big East (at least in football) for least essential. Only UT and OU matter to anybody anywhere.
That’s basically a blue vs red state thing huh (other than the ACC being really polarized)
Also correct me if I'm wrong but the strongest support for the Unity movement was in the Pac-12 and Big-10 right? I'm still convinced that both conferences cancelling is more about stopping that movement from getting stronger than it is for player safety.

I know mgoblog has a ton of sources inside the department and they've been saying it's looked dire for months. Well before the unionization movement started. I think the difference is that generally the athletic departments are less powerful in those two conferences.

Stay classy FSU. You make it very hard to support you in any way.
Lets just play the sport with the most contact and the most people in close proximety together, both on tye field and the sideline. Everything will be fine

Hundreds or more non athlete students at all these schools are going to get sick, and dozens will have severe lifelong conditions as a result, so that they could have football
