Scots is the collective name for Scottish dialects known also as ‘Doric’, ‘Lallans’ and ‘Scotch’ or by more local names such as ‘Buchan’, ‘Dundonian’, ‘Glesca’ or ‘Shetland’.

    Wow

This is really wild (and quite bad). And a massive problem for Wikipedia / trust in Wikipedia.

It's crazy if you actually look at the articles by this guy. It is painfully obvious that it's nonsense.

EDIT: in before 'Wikipedia is bad, actually'. It has lots of problems, especially the 'local' variants like this.

Thanks, I didn't know that. This knowledge may be more esoteric than you think, or I might be dumber than I thought.

    Or both.

I didn't mean to suggest it was perfect. But the amount of information available to anyone with an internet connection (more or less) is staggering. If you compare the Wikipedia page on damn near anything, to the average information presented by all the books and news articles it still holds up really well.

Yep, Wikipedia is a fucking terrible source.

It's an excellent source aggregator, though. Any page worth a shit should have dozens if not hundreds of links to sources at the bottom of the page, and THERE'S where you find the real meat.

One of the worst things I saw were pages edited by people with a rape fetish to make it appear women like being raped

And there's not much you can do once a group has captured certain articles

Well, you can sabotage a page with enough deliberately bad edits it gets locked and reviewed by moderators. Usually they will review back far enough to see stuff like pro-rape arguments and revert the page to an earlier state, and re-lock it for a while.

Yeah, the writer/editor demographics of Wikipedia is maybe worse skewed than the writer demographics of actual academia

There's some deep systemic problems there

I still like Wikipedia a bunch and use it all the time and regularly give them money to continue their existence, because I do think they are ultimately a good and useful tool for many things, but it's also flawed and that's something that readers/users should be aware of at all times

Another problem area is Wikipedia editors drawing extensively upon and using material from 19th century racialist sources, some of the side articles on colonial history are also completely fucked (massacres become "celebrated actions")

Didn't help that the standard retort back in the day was to shift responsibility back onto everyone who isn't white, male, cishet, as if there aren't established systems you have to actively struggle against

wiki's mission statement and editing structure has always been orthogonal to actual expertise, by design. I often think of it as an interesting exercise in asymmetrical warfare, rather than a knowledge compendium.

I asked my teacher about that when I was a kid, like fifth grade maybe, why every time Native Americans lured some cavalrymen into a box canyon and kicked their asses it's called a "massacre" but when the army rode into some village and killed everything that moved or breathed it was called a "battle" and then I wouldn't let it go and I got sent to the office.

you know what? I'm going to re-link this here too, because it exposed me to taxonomic categorizations of the aesthetics of my youth, and I would consider those to be Facts that are Interesting

I used to think I was Whimsical Mystical Gothic Celestial because in highschool I only ever wanted to be a free spirited manic pixie dream boy with the chromatic stylizations and self confidence of a nihilistic goth

but I'm in my early thirties and I gotta face facts, I'm Frasurbane all the way

because I can kind of get the first, the Urbane Frasier life is not for everyone

No, like, not your particular choice, that’s fine

you're just angry at being old, sarukun

instead you gotta embrace the fact that you're out of touch, worn out, past your prime

consider taking up smoking a pipe as a hobby or using suspenders in everyday life

relinquish youth to the young and learn to appreciate the immaterial value in non-consumeristic nostalgia
