I don't know where to find it anymore, but someone did a pretty thorough read of Matthew Perry's character and his relationship to Sarah Paulson's character and how it was uh...extremely similar to Aaron Sorkin's relationship with Kristen Chenoweth
This is why you have professionals. To look at a task proposed to them and say "This tree is tall enough that we are going to have to fell it in sections, because no matter what direction it falls in it will cause collateral damage were we simply to cut the base. Luckily, we have specialized equipment to do such a thing."

To be fair, they thought they were hiring a professional sounds like.

what kind of insurance would he even have needed to get in order to cover him damaging another person's house with a falling tree? surely your own home insurance wouldn't cover damage to another house, right? it would have to be some kind of general business liability insurance or something?

tree removal services are bonded and insured

it'd probably be classified as contractors insurance

You'd have general contractors insurance for that kind of work.

that's also exactly the kind of thing my grandpa would have said he could do for a hundred bucks, and if you'd even made him aware of the existence of 'contractors insurance' he would have been immediately enraged and cut the tree down for free out of spite (with the same results)

But personally, “he did a good job on the lawn, so I trusted him,” is the kinda comment that makes me say I’m glad it was your house, not someone else’s, and that no one was maimed or killed.
I may be biased living in an area with a whole lot of trees, but knowing that trees ain’t nothing to fuck with and you get professionals for that just feels like entry level adult knowledge, much less homeowner knowledge.

That is a bit of a bias compared to that area to be sure. I'm just not ready to harangue a guy because he trusted a dude at his word.

Felling a tree is one of those things where doing it the right way seems really expensive until you do it the wrong way and have to pay for the inevitable damage that results.

It's one of those things where if you don't have any experience with that kind of shit and a guy says "Oh yeah, I can handle that for ya" you might be inclined to listen to him instead of checking his references.

My friend offered to cut down down two trees taller than my 2nd story, 3ft from my house and 6ft from the neighbor. He pieced out the top halves and dropped the rest perfectly between because he used to be an arborist 8-). All he asked for was for me to buy the climbing spikes and a new chain saw. Saved me like 2 grand.

what we're learning here is that munkus had a tree fall on his house
I don't own a house, but when I was a kid we had a huge one of those skinny trees and paid professionals to come take care of it, since it was on the side of a mountain.
I just have a lot of experience with home-owner shit because I worked adjacent to that industry for a time.

Absolutely fair; I have gaps in my own knowledge and wouldn’t want to be dog-piled over them, but the guy getting out there and acting like the victim is just profoundly goosie, and he should absolutely feel as such about the decisions he made that lead up the moments immortalized in this video.

this was clearly unintended, but there was no way for that tree to be felled safely in a neighborhood like that
you're supposed to call an arborist for that kind of job
