    They set it up for a second movie, for sure. It's just the more little things they change the more drift from the original we are going to see.
    In the manga, Alita became estranged from Doctor Ito after the death of her romantic interest, and joined the racing circuit to cope. After a whole story arc about the racing that the movie just cut out, the next story arc is launched when Alita tries to track down her Berserker body. She was required to use a more standardized body for racing, and her manager sold the berserker body without telling her in an attempt to keep her racing. She doesn't learn about the mad doctor antagonist from the movie until she leaves it all behind and goes traveling, and the dude def doesn't run the show in Factory City.
