I think the main reason I bounced off that trailer is that I thought the character was just random TIE guy?

But I watched the reveal trailer again and I think the guy on the far right in the Imperial pilot power walk shot is him.

So that has somewhat made it more interesting. This isn't just a random short story on roughly the same topic at about the same time; it's a character piece for a character who will (again, probably) be in the game. As a main character, probably! That makes it arguably better than any of the TOR trailers, which (since you create your own characters in that game) by necessity could show only NPCs. If that's the case (I could be mistaken about the identity of the game), I hope we get one for each squadron member.

I always assumed the TOR trailers displayed each class, and so they displayed a bunch of people who were technically PCs. Huh.

According to tweets or something, his full name is
Varko Grey. And you join Titan squadron to fill the hole he leaves after he crashed.

edit: And no you wont be playing as him, you play as your own character in Titan Squadron

Oh shit, he has a full bio on the databank

    https://www.starwars.com/databank/varko-grey
Varko Grey started his career as a police officer on Parkella, fighting to keep order in the face of corruption and injustice. In time he joined up as an Imperial TIE pilot, seeing the Empire as the only hope for a chaotic galaxy. Beating the odds to survive battle after battle — much to the relief of his husband Emory — Grey’s skills and experience eventually earned him a promotion to Titan Leader. Over the years, Grey has wrestled internally with the Empire's methods, but he's seen too many TIE pilots sacrifice their lives for Imperial ideals to reject them now.

did not see some of that coming, but cool

Yeah they're all NPCs (most of the ones who survive are all questgivers), demonstrating the flavor of the various PC classes in a decidedly non-gameplay-feeling way. Of all the characters in the original three trailers, only four characters can even join up with a player character as NPC party members (though "party" size is limited to two, because WoW-style MMORPG), and one of those isn't even permanent.

My opinion of that trailer is: meh.

On a technical level, sure, it was great. Neat camera angles and good framing in big space battles are always great to see. Literally every rendered cinematic trailer (that is to say, an advertisement) for a modern video game is basically great on a technical level. Though I will say it's nice to see a Star Wars space battle I didn't think "ugh, those tactics" in, if only because the battle was over and had degenerated into a brawl by that point.

The story was rote, the dialog was mostly flat, and it probably told us less about how the actual game will play we didn't know than the rendered Star Wars: The Old Republic trailers. At most we learned that TIEs will (probably) have some countermeasures against missiles. And the tactics displayed by our (gag) hero were nearly on par with the Hope trailer for TOR. (Which, for clarity, were bad, and took me entirely out of that very pretty trailer.)

And I call shenanigans on the ending. It's the Empire. No way they're coming back for a single pilot who disobeyed orders and got left behind as a result, never mind soon enough that he doesn't starve to death.

Well Titan Squad seems to be the current 'verse version of 181st and I can absolutely going back for Fel.

Life and Death had a cool one. You had to use a code wheel to figure out the right extension to respond to a beeper message from a fellow doctor. If you guessed wrong, you dialed a wrong number and got a rude response and the game exited.

Eh, Obi, the Imp clearly fired first. He could have surrendered, but chose to take shots instead. That makes him more than fair game.

I get what you're saying and you're not wrong. There's more than one way to look at it, I guess.

In my mind it was akin to a wounded soldier pretending to be dead on the battlefield after the fight is over while the enemy army marches forward. Then one guy walks back to make sure everyone is really dead. Comes face to face with a guy he thinks is faking. The guy faking takes a pot shot then runs away limping. Dude then chases down the wounded soldier intent on finishing him off.

Who's the dick in that situation? To me its the guy chasing down wounded after the battle was clearly over.

I remember Xwing needed a fucking code from two pages in the manual to install and it wasn't even like a real language it was the shapes they use for numbers in the game.

Except they're not on foot, he's in an operational weapon of war at the time. That changes the calculation completely. Do you think that it's good battlefield policy to let enemy fighters and tanks leave unbothered?

Good point. I'm not sure where I'd draw the line. But, to me, in that short, it came across as unnecessary to chase him down. Especially as far as he did.

Actually they were right? I didn't know if the X-Wing manual did that but knew TIE Fighter did so I went and looked up some scans of it and Aurabesh and they totally aren't the same. According to the abandoned page of somebody on the internet who turned it into a font it only really exists in those manuals and Dark Forces?

That is fantastic. I wonder if they had a guy just look at Aurebesh from the films and just make a font based on that, or what.

Edit: that is wild, I absolutely conflated these examples with Aurebesh in my head, I remember playing all these games as a kid and they occupy the same space in my head as the alphabet from Return of the Jedi.

they really need to fix the deadzone problem though, you can offset it by dialing sensitivity to 100 but it just makes far end aiming worse.
