y'all need to understand the difference between a single possible scenario and a foregone conclusion
one ain't the other
Just looking briefly at FiveThirtyEight, and it seems like the Senate is going to be close, so it's in the best interest of Republicans to try and ram through a candidate as fast as possible before the election for maximum fuckery
58% of Americans voted for a Democratic Senator in 2018 and McConnell is using the 2018 Senate elections to claim he represents the will of the people because fuck you liberals.
The real question to me right now is if Trump appoints before the election. If it's pre-election, Trump will have a friendly SCOTUS to rule in his favor in a contested election. He will cheat even harder. The odds that we wind up with a full blown violent fascist coup goes up significantly.
But also the odds of pissed off motivation in states where he can't cheat a win, and riots in the streets if they pull it off increase significantly.
I'm betting for a lame duck confirmation before states are certified depending on the winds.
Trump also is loathe to spend his second term 'only because SCOTUS cheated for him'. Which will be the whole narrative and something everyone should harp on.
He doesn't want the whole 'popular vote loser / EC / Russia' thing. It infuriates him. So definitely stress how he will only win because of SCOTUS and that will be how he is remembered - a two time loser who loopholes his way in.
McConnell statement just out: "Americans reelected our majority in 2016 and expanded it in 2018 because we pledged to work with President Trump and support his agenda, particularly his outstanding appointments to the federal judiciary. Once again, we will keep our promise.
It's Charlie Brown and that fucking football every time. We assume they're going to play by the norms and not fuck us, and yet here they are, set to fuck us for generations to come.

no it's best for Republicans to hold the vote after the election because a lot of races that shouldn't be close are close due to how bad their brand is
losing the Senate is far greater a loss than losing the Presidency
I mean, don't the hearings take monthes anyway? Even if Trump put forward a candidate tomorrow, between the time to vet someone and get through the hearings it seems like it would likely push it into next year anyway. I simply don't think they'll be so stupid as to start the hearings prior to November even if they nominate someone, because that'll just give Democrats a great speaking platform to campaign from. Idk anything is up in the air at this point, but I think it's going to get pushed to November and the actual vote will get delayed until the new Senate seats in January (I desperately hope.)
Mitch McConnell is such a shameless fucking piece of shit oh my god.

the hearings take as long as McConnell wants them to
If the GOP loses the senate elections do those senators get to stay on like the president until Jan or are they gone right away and they lose those votes?
CNN is reporting that GOP sources are saying the vote will be after the election this year (lame duck session).
If that happens and we take both the Senate and the presidency then there better be a DC/Puerto Rico statehood bill and a bill to pack the courts on day 1 of a Biden presidency.

They will ram whoever it is through in two or three days. There won't be any hearings, just a few minutes to show how hard he can give Trump's ego a good stroking, and then they vote him in just based on that. They want loyalty to Trump and the Republican party first, knowledge of law comes in a distant second.

they also have the lame duck period but, like I said, losing the Senate will do more damage to the Republican agenda than anything else right now, and they are not going to risk it

I don't think anybody is surprised by Mitch's ratfuckery.

there is literally no chance they'll somehow accidentally miss the deadline. if it was late october and not late september? maybe. but there's just way too much time. this has been mitch's goal the last 4 years, he's been salivating at replacing the most liberal justice on the court for 30 years with a lunatic.

Trump could submit his nominee and Mitch could vote them through ad quickly as he has quorum.
So like 11:30 tonight if they really wanted to say fuck you.
Also a huge abuse of the term lame duck to include all of a president's second term.
Lame duck judicial appointments are literally a Marbury v Madison situation.
This is true, you could theoretically have Roberts refuse to accept the justice (if possible, I'm not sure about this particular procedure) in order to apply some pressure against court packing.

Yeah, I knew he was going to push it forward, it's just depressing to see it in the flesh.
The greatest injustice of our era is that, barring a full on civil war (so not off the table, I guess), McConnell probably doesn't end his political career hanged for treason in prison despite being one of the vilest, most destructive people in America.

Vet someone? Why would they do that?
Kavanaugh's on the court, for fuck's sake. I don't think McConnell will want to waste the time of vetting someone for anything other than party loyalty if it means a seat on the Court

I mean, we already know that Ted Cruz and Tom Cotton are on the nominee list. Excuse me, I need to go vomit.
I think this was expected for the last week or two. Trump put forward a short list of nominees including Cotton and Cruz like last week, feels kinda like they knew it was coming.

specifically if Cruz or Cotton are Trump's nominee does that put Republicans down a vote? because that changes the Collins/Murkowski/Romney issue completely

It is also a lie. Anthony Kennedy (Reagan) was confirmed in 1988 with a Democratic Senate.
