I've also finally gotten round to reading Sweet Home which is another Korean Webtoon

It's a story about an 18 year old surviving in a monster apocalypse (well, actually a huge and excellent big cast of characters, but initially). And the main character starts off as a self-loathing 4chan troll, and it doesn't really shy away from how horrible that is. But it's also a story of someone slowly and genuinely trying to be a better person. It does mean that there's a few slurs thrown around at the beginning, and I'd give a big content warning for talking a lot about suicide.

But, at least 50 something chapters in, it doesn't invoke that flippantly at all.

It's also incredibly funny and creative with the monster design. It's very body horror-y, but in a really interesting way rather than just gross-out ish.

It really uses the whole "scroll down" format very well. There are some absolutely amazing moments and reveals using it.
Felt like it started to drag a bit in the back half. Like, I didn't find the group conflict in that part too compelling, and it definitely felt like they were running out of really creative monster designs. On the whole, still liked it though.

wow that was such a hella phonepost that I'll leave it as is

but yeah QC always seemed inoffensive in terms of like... the narrative content, I guess it was more of a punchline/quip thing that my brain glosses over because it was such a long time ago

I re-read all of QC as prep for the piece and

There are a LOT of edgy gross jokes, some of which have rape as a punchline, in the first 1000 or so strips

It sounds like it is but it is actually less than a quarter of the comic

And also, like I said in the piece, even if the jokes were bad there were steps to further growth well before the 1,000 mark

A Mark Trail who does not fuck is no true Mark Trail

yeah i don't doubt they're there (I've only read QC as they came out, so I'm likely forgetting a ton about the early strips), it's just something that casual misogyny/rape culture/homophobia was so ingrained in "internet humour" of the time that I doubt I would have blinked an eye at rape-as-a-quip punchlines

it does sorta seem at odds with everything the characters do in QC, like I don't really remember any(?) instance of characters assaulting/sexually abusing/ or really vindictively being awful to each other, aside from early strips where I think Faye sometimes punched people in the arm

i'm kinda glad that the internet places that I frequent have largely moved past that shit, it was a very fucked up time

The two comics that seem to have made the largest arc from wallowing in that stuff to pretty much the exact opposite are Something Positive and (astonishingly) Least I Could Do. Which is still very much White Guy Says Things™, but when you look where that thing started, man.

e: QC is in a more positive place than either of them, mind you, it just didn't start from their depths.

I still read Something Positive pretty regularly. Whenever I can make it to Gen Con, I even commission some art from him, since he doesn't have the largest selection of physical products to buy.

I love that he won an award for a Popeye comic (which was just like...among all the comics hosted on the site, but still).

Also that he's making official Popeye comics.

Top one on this page was the one that won

Yup, Randy is super great to fans.

I was gonna be like, was S*P that bad but then I flashed to the Mike/Trents thing from early on and...well the joke was Mike's homophobia but it sure had rape right behind it.

I mean, literally the first comic is an abortion joke. Its whole thing was being edgy at the start.

They do look poochie esque. I think Willis is trying out a subtle change in the art style, you can see it in the other characters too, and it feels a bit out of place.

How exactly is this new person “poochie esque”

Poochie was a parody of 90s “extreme” or “radical” marketing culture, who was discarded immediately at the end of 5e episode.

Booster is androgynous, wears makeup, and has a nontraditional, nongendered name. Plus Willis does not have a habit of bringing in new characters only to discard them. They become part of the emsemble, even if they do not have much of a role.

Remember when Mark Trails invented a character based on the appearance of the guy that talks about newspaper cartoons solely for the purposes of dunking on him and leaving him to die on a mountain?
