cause no one's played it maybe they should put it out here
I have it on my PS3, so it’s here, for various definitions of here. I got it on a whim at Best Buy for $20 not knowing what Yakuza was, tried playing it and realized there was a lot of story behind these characters that I was missing and decided to start finding the real games. Now I own all but Judgment (well, except for the Japan exclusive ones). I even have Fist of the North Star, now that is a perfect fit for the engine. I’m still playing through Kiwami 2, but I hope to have them finished sometime this year.
For reasons unclear even to myself, I've decided to replay Yakuza 0 and go for the Platinum. I recognize this as a foolhardy and potentially impossible endeavor - mahjong looms like an goliath on the horizon.
BUT, my attempts thus far have already borne some unexpected fruits. Playing on Legendary has given me an appreciation for Rush mode, for instance. When I first played Y0, I got Beast mode and never looked back. But it turns out that, when swarmed by goons that can stun lock you into oblivion in seconds flat, "not getting hit" is pretty fuckin' useful!
I've also found all sorts of shit that I didn't even know was in the game, just from slowly working my way through the Completion List. Pool has puzzle challenges, where you make trick shots for money! Bowling has a challenge mode where you knock down tricky splits! Baseball has a high-stakes, one-miss-and-you're-out challenge course! Mama from Earth Angel can be recruited as a Real Estate advisor!
Y0 was my first exposure to the Yakuza series. I knew, intellectually, that it was a massive, sprawling thing. But I didn't appreciate on my first playthrough just how deep it was. How packed to the fucking gills it is. How content it is to let you not even be aware of full-ass mini-games it has. Gosh, what a game.
Telephone Club and Catfighting still suck complete shit, tho
I think that by far the hardest part of my Y0 plat was the climax battles.
Mahjong was a daunting wall, but I watched a few basic "how to" videos online and while I'm still trash at mahjong I was able to grasp enough to get the completion list done. Honestly some of the other Japanese gambling games gave me about as much of a challenge since I'm not familiar with how they play. I still couldn't tell you wtf I was doing in Koi-Koi, but I somehow managed to finish it on the list.
The climax battles are some shit though. I remember sitting down one weekend to clear them and it was like 3am the next morning by the time I was able to beat them all.
koi-koi rules when you understand how to play. I legit looked up ways to play against humans online after I read through a rules guide on gamefaqs and played a bunch against the AI

Odd thought: after watching Beastars, I'd totally be up for having Kiryu's dub voiced by Legoshi's VA (Jonah Scott). I'd miss that rumbly baritone, though.
I mean, whatever, I was fully intending for the first game I complete on my PS5 to be PS4-ass Y7, it's just weird to me that the upgrade is that far out
Have they said what the PS4/PS5 version differences will be beyond "it'll be prettier"?
I'd be interested in seeing a comparison video.
Of course I still have to finish Y3 and then play 4-6 before 7 so I guess I'll just wait for the ps5 version anyways. I highly doubt I'm going to get through the series in time for the ps4 release.

just looking at the video they linked there it looks like a smoother framerate is the main thing
I'm still deep enough in Yakuza 5 and will need a break from this series after mainlining it this year, so I probably won't get 7 until the PS5 version drops anyway

i stalled out on Y6 and have instead been playing judgment! i like it! it's a nice streamlined Yakuza Experience™, though while i am generally focused on the main plot i do have to dock points for the lack of karaoke

Microsoft bought time limited exclusivity on the upgrade.

Finally overcame my distractions and beat Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise. Goddamn, that final run is tense and nuts and wonderful.
This game got unfairly slept on, I feel. And do did the soundtrack, which contains this Absolute Banger.
Good wholesome things! Saving people from muggers! Helping down-on-their-luck hostess clubs! Buying porn for minors!
Helping a random dude on the street demonstrate his new bag-phone!
Helping a dominatrix perfect her skills! Busting an oddly familiar-looking panty thief!
I really do have to wonder what the side quest writers room at RGG looks like. How they make 80+ unique quests every time is mind boggling.
Well, more like 79
They save a bit of time by copy and pasting the "Pretend to be my boyfriend" template once a game
(The best version of that, by a country mile, is in North Star)

I like to think that somewhere in Japan, a Yakuza boss has played these games and passed down an ultimatum for his underbosses to start going around helping random people.

i remember they did interview some actual yakuza and they thought that the characters' fashion sense was terrible

"Ooohhhh no!"
Also its time to become an idol!
But it does feel weird to give Haruka this big story about trying to be a Idol only to get her teen pregnant and put her on a bus the next game.

Co-host of the Sega TGS stream said that there's a new Yakuza announcement and then deleted the tweet 🤔
Oh, well
Seeies producer Masayoshi Yokoyama said in another tweet this was a mistake, no new game announcement on the stream

Cee-lo would be super fun in person, with my friends, shittalking and goading each other into terrible bets. Absolutely miserable digital, against AI.
Oichu-kabu? This shit rules. Genuinely compelling. Glad I'm on this quixotic quest, because now I know it's dope.
this is a crime
