If Sonic represents nature and he's fighting against technology in the form of Eggman, how does the car thing factor into that, and does Sonic not care about climate change

There were rumors Sonic was gonna be in a Mario Kart but Sega didnt want.him to be in a Kart

This was around the gamecube era so Im guessing it became double dash and that was right out

He had already been in a cart in the Game Gear by that time though. So that's... strange.

Clean energy cars. He just runs on a treadmill for like 2 minutes to charge the batteries.

While Sonic used to represent environmentalism vs. Eggman's industrialism, I'm not sure that he still does?

That's the official reason, plus "The rules are that everyone uses a vehicle."

Check out my interview with producer Steve Lycett for Mega Visions on Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing's 10th anniversary, and there's also a bit where Sonic was going to be on foot, Tails flew a plane, and Gilius was riding a Chickenleg (and some other fun tidbits).

    Sonic mostly represents merchandise.

I figured once upon a time it was SEGA as the new, shiny underdog vs Nintendo as the old, dusty capitalist.

    Talent vs factory made.
Individualism vs being turned into a robot.
    Young vs old.
    Outsider vs Japanese businessman.

Wasn't he based on Theodore Roosevelt? That's what I've always heard, anyway.

I read that Sonic was originally supposed to be from Nevada, play in a rock band and have a human girlfriend named Madonna, but that was ultimately considered not kid-friendly

SEGA of America's marketing division had words to say about this.

They are also the reason we have Miles "Tails" Prower instead of him just being called Miles Prower all the time.

At one point Sonic was going to be a rabbit who picked up objects with his ears to throw at enemies. Then the rolling came in and I think that's when they wanted to change to an animal that rolls into a ball and dropped the throwing objects bit.

The other thing, of course, is that driving can just be fun to do.

(It's also funny that no one ever asks why Tails flies a plane when he can just fly with his tails, especially as he does so far more often.)

In Tails's case, it's pretty well-established that his ability to fly is pretty limited, at least in the games, and that probably flows outward into other media. Sonic runs at top speed tirelessly, but Tails flies in limited bursts.

My favorite musical instrument is the air-raid siren.

He was initially designed as a protagonist. Which is why his design features a cape.

The original design was basically just Cartoon Teddy Roosevelt in pyjamas (and holding a pillow, IIRC)

the "cape" is only really a thing in the American art - the original is more of a weird collar situation

Hot new Sega tape in the works:

Pac Man's character is difficult to explain even to the Japanese -- he is an innocent character. He hasn't been educated to discern between good and evil. He acts more like a small child than a grown-up person. Think of him as a child learning in the course of his daily activities. If someone tells him guns are evil, he would be the type to rush out and eat guns. But he would most probably eat any gun, even the pistols of policemen who need them.

    You should!

In corporate law, if you defeat and kill a CEO in an unarmed cage match, it's called a "hostile takeover" and you get their job and pay!

Oh for sure, I just mean that I'm worried that he's probably the kind of monster that would have your family kidnapped before the fight and have his hired goons dump them in the middle of the ocean if you win the fight, but you only find this out AFTER the fight has started.
