It's a two part story.
First is how I met his SO. I went to a Stale-PAX event and one of the forumers decided to bring his girlfriend. He warned us all beforehand that she was super duper fundy Christian and to not be too wild and raucous with her. She shows up wearing a crucifix to this mostly 21+ forumer party and we're all a bit confused. Then it turns out that she's not his girlfriend, isn't Christian, and before the party he asked her to wear the crucifix and she agreed. Years later she ends up dating Stale! And I keep in touch with her and him. But I only talk to her like, once a year at most.
Cut to 2011, I am asleep in the middle of the day because law school exams are happening and I study all night. Out of the blue she sends me a text, "Are you OK?" This is a very weird text to get with no prior warning and no inebriated shenanigans going on, then I remembered she was going to college in Birmingham (about a 30 minute drive from where I was) and that we had some weird weather lately. I go to check the weather on my laptop annnnnnnnnd there's a gigantic tornado less than a mile from my house. I run to the bathroom and get in the tub. Then think "I am not gonna lose my notes for class nor my God. Damned. Mass Effect save files." and run out and grab my laptop and run back to the tub. I try to close the door, but my towel is hanging from it. I pull the towel down and try to shut the door and
BOOM
I am clutching my laptop, pushing the door closed, wind is whipping debris all around. I have time to look up and see the ceiling crack, daylight peak through and think "I did not go through all the bullshit of law school to die here" and then it was over.
When I came out of the bathroom, my ceiling was gone, the windows were gone, the ceiling fan was hanging by a wire on top of my bed.
Keep in mind this was when I lived with a rather kooky roommate who listend to infowars and hid gold in the roof because he didn't trust the government.

Gone down to the fucking floorboards. You could see where walls were supposed to be, where kitchen became living room, where pipes should connect, but as if it had just been sheared off the top like cutting a cake. It was surreal as hell because of how neat it ended up looking.
One of the fatalities happened on the street I lived on, and I heard about it the day of the disaster. If you ever read Sports Illustrated around that time, they had a story about it, a girlfriend of one of the bama football players was sucked out and killed.
So yeah, surprisingly few fatalities all things considered!

It has been remarkable watching Imgur shift steadily left over the last year or so. There are still some blind spots (the site as a whole doesn't believe in cultural appropriation at all and they still have some pretty shit views about gender and queer politics) but it's easy to skip over that stuff.
There has also recently been a lot of grassroots charity going on there, like one account just started offering to send people pizza if they couldn't afford food and now they do it every Friday and dozens of other accounts join in so that someone will comment their car broke down so they don't have money for groceries and 20 minutes later a bunch of food shows up at their door.

In my defense, it was very cartoony. But on the prosecution side, it technically did lack even the minimal plausible deniability provided by those pleather undies.
It is wild to come back here from time to time and see how things are going since my heyday in 2003-7ish. Especially seeing so many treat that period of "forum history" as if it were Ravenholm.
I get it - I was 13 when I joined, and felt right at home. Bit of a red flag in hindsight, but I still desperately tried to act older than I was.
One fun part of that was thinking that the very first thing I would do after getting my driver's license would be driving 7+ hours by myself to one of the very first PAXes to see people I met online. In fact, I was unable to convince my parents that this was a good idea!
This place is responsible for me becoming "the guy that can get you into the Gmail beta" at school, so kudos for that. It's also partially responsible for my brain's uncanny ability to predict the most dismissive possible reply to anything I say online, but honestly I feel like that sort of happens to anyone who spends a part of their life Extremely Online?
As part of that, I don't really expect fellow Ancient Ones to remember me. I don't recall doing anything particularly noteworthy! But it was always a good time playing games together. An old hard drive held all of my EPYC sketches and Blebz memorabilia for years, across several different PCs. One day it died, and the relics of my time here became increasingly fuzzy memories.

It is wild to come back here from time to time and see how things are going since my heyday in 2003-7ish. Especially seeing so many treat that period of "forum history" as if it were Ravenholm.
I get it - I was 13 when I joined, and felt right at home. Bit of a red flag in hindsight, but I still desperately tried to act older than I was.
One fun part of that was thinking that the very first thing I would do after getting my driver's license would be driving 7+ hours by myself to one of the very first PAXes to see people I met online. In fact, I was unable to convince my parents that this was a good idea!
This place is responsible for me becoming "the guy that can get you into the Gmail beta" at school, so kudos for that. It's also partially responsible for my brain's uncanny ability to predict the most dismissive possible reply to anything I say online, but honestly I feel like that sort of happens to anyone who spends a part of their life Extremely Online?
As part of that, I don't really expect fellow Ancient Ones to remember me. I don't recall doing anything particularly noteworthy! But it was always a good time playing games together. An old hard drive held all of my EPYC sketches and Blebz memorabilia for years, across several different PCs. One day it died, and the relics of my time here became increasingly fuzzy memories.
