2) if Becky and I were in the same classes she'd be one of those people whose opinions I consistently agreed with but who would insist on interrupting the lecturer to have full-on storytime anecdotes about how their lived experiences differ from what's being taught

If you confront an anti-vaxxer with the facts, it tends to make them believe more strongly in the dangers of vaccination. If someone else is hearing about the dangers of vaccination for the first time, they stand a good chance of retaining the falsehoods that are being refuted rather than the refutations.
The brain hates to change its mind, and it desperately wants to avoid feeling bad about itself. So if you attempt to change someone's mind by opening with what a bad person they are, they're immediately going to harden their beliefs and a terrifyingly powerful pattern-finding machine is going to spend the rest of the argument coming up with more pieces of evidence that support their position and make you seem like a hateful asshole. Meanwhile, anyone who overhears or reads the argument are now rolling the dice to see which bits of information they remember later.
