So, is Deep ever going to catch a break, maybe have a redemptive arc? Or is he going to be the perpetual whipping boy?

I mean, he's an asshole. I'm not disputing that. But the humiliation has been pretty encompassing. Also, poor Lucy.

And regarding their social messaging on quite a few fronts, I'm loving the brute force they're applying.

"What do you think of Eagle?"
"He's my rock. My shining light."
    "He's toxic."
    "Yeah, fuck that guy."

At least the other asshole heroes get something besides continued degradation.

Nothing about The Deep makes me think he's deserving of a redemptive arc.

I'm not going to lie it took me a while to watch season 1 cuz Homelander we looks like Bradley Cooper with cotton balls in his cheeks so hearing he's on the short list to play Wolverine is interesting...

He's definitely good, but I've only seen him play this where I just want to strangle him. For which he'd probably crush my head and then fuck Stormfront on my corpse.

He was also the lead character on Banshee which from youtube clips apparently was a show about beating the piss out of people.

The dude who plays Homelander is so good. I've never hated a character yet felt awful for them at the same time, quite as much as Homelander. And I think a big part of that is the actor portraying him in this case. I mean...the breast milk thing...egad.

I've never read the comics so my predictions for a few things:

    1. I think Starlight has got be the one who takes out stormfront right? Now that we know she's powered by electricity? Maybe she's able to team up with Kamiko and Maeve to do the deed?
    2. I honestly have no idea how the Boys can ever possibly take out Homelander. I am aware of how it's done in the comics because I was curious and googled it. But that doesn't seem like an option here. Homelander's son seems too easy of a choice.
    3. I love Huey. That is all.

Yeah they seem to be going a totally different direction with homelander.

After the last episode, I can't see how they would loop that back.

I enjoy a fair few parts of what it's doing, but the Stormfront being a literal Nazi who creates a direct allegory to Trump's political campaigns seems like lazy, hack writing. I don't think this show has good writing anywhere, but it feels especially egregious that the show'll dip its toes into nazi villains and evoke contemporary horrors, but probably not say anything meaningful beyond Trump = Nazi, supervillain terrorist = minority boogeyman of any decade.

You can write something better than the hackiness of real life. We keep saying 2020's writers are hacks. So why does the show's uncreative response to modernity getting a pass? There's a point where Stormfront probably kills a lot of people in an apartment building before offing the Female's brother. It feels as though we are basking in violence without a clear point, or interesting commentary beyond the heroes are actually white supremacist villains.

If that's the comics too then fair enough, but in modern life I don't need to actively seek any more senseless violence and bleakness. It seems they forgot about the inherent escapism to superheroes, and went with torture/violence porn instead. It's just so bleak in a way that seems fairly unenjoyable, and I'm probably done if this season cannot resolve and actually having meaning come to all of the gore.

The Boys is not escapism, it's commentary on escapism.

In terms of "Grade A superpowered Asshole" The Deep isn't even close to Homelander, Stormfront, Black Noir, Translucent or even A-train.

None of the Seven are really "worthy of redemption" (I mean, that's kind of the point of The Boys. Power corrupts and superpowers are even more of a corrupting influence than other forms of power), but with the exception of Starlight (who is genuinely a good and caring person and doesn't really need a redemption arc) the only members of the Seven that really give a shit about anything but themselves are Maeve and The Deep.

That's who she is in the comics, but she's a dude in the comics.

She kills a whole bunch of black folks and minorities in the apartment and it's clear from the get go they were setting that up to show how ruthless she is (a long with the later revelation of her previous identity and being a gigantic fucking racist piece of shit).

This probably isn't the show for you though. The comics only get worse from this point.

Maybe the interesting character to look at in context of Stormfront is Homelander. It has been interesting watching her try to move him towards her ideology.

a question they haven't addressed and some people have pointed out is how DO they stop homelander? surely Vought has a failsafe of some kind in place - but what could it be? What's to stop him from going on a rampage and killing thousands of people like his fantasy in front of that crowd? Or turning on vought?

And how it appears he actually is, which has uncomfortable parallels to our own society as well. Though I still am kind of reserved on this. Homelander is a horrific murderer and sociopath. He could be just getting close to her using her to find out what she's weak to and then killing her ass once he's gotten what he wants.

Which also has parrallels to our society...

black noire is a more sadistic form of homelander, they sort of use him to torture homelander

    potential future show spoiler
Edgar/Cult of Fresca might be the one that's popping heads to keep shit from spilling out and I think Homelander might have suspicions after his conversation with Edgar earlier in the season.

There was a moment in the office with the CEO where Homelander backed down in a very uncharacteristic way. I had thought maybe the chips are bombs, and durability is only skin deep?

Which makes no real sense, that isnt how injuries work, but the buttbomb worked once...

But that kind of thing would also completely defang the threat of any Vought controlled Supe and seems too easy. And they seem removable.

Starlight isn't as durable as Homelander though, so if he is chipped from a young age then it could still be in there. But there was also that bit in the early episodes of this season where it seemed like no-one knew where he'd gone so maybe he's not got one.

"All of this is fucked and you oughta be horrified" is pretty much the point of The Boys. The primary message of The Boys is "If they existed in real life why the fuck do you think superpowered people would be good, moral or in any way different from regular people? Super powers would be just one more thing to abuse on the quest for wealth, power and sex".
Everyone of the seven (former and present) is a representation of one of the ways the search for wealth and power corrupts and destroys.

Seeing Giancarlo Esposito slap the shit out of Homelander as if it were nothing (like Neo at the end of The Matrix), would be the fucking best fucking thing fucking ever.

I am now prematurely disappointed about any and every alternate outcome.

I mean really stormfront follows up on what Homelander did in season 1 after he fucked up the plane hijack and then used it as a talking point for "why we need supes".

It mirrors our real world politicians and it should make you uncomfortable BECAUSE ITS A BULLSHIT THING TO DO! See any recent police shooting and "why didn't they just comply."

Yes but what's the follow-up by the comics? The superheroes who represent cops, PMCs, political figures, movie stars... basically the concept of corruption within societies established power sources VS the CIA Black Ops squad?

If the show doesn't have something to say beyond ALL OF THIS IS FUCKED AND YOU OUGHTA BE HORRIFIED, then it's just too bleak.

The Boys in the show is only sort of a CIA Black squad, as in that's how they started under Mallory, but under Butcher? They are the anarchist douchbag antifa shitkickers.

Mallory's Boys where keep tabs, blackmail for info and hold hearings type of unit. We saw at the end of last episode how good that works.

Butcher's Boys are find out their weakspot, anything that works and shoving explosives up their ass type of unit. From the promo that is what we are getting next week.

Its seems like the message is, when shit gets too bad, when the power structures are too corrupt, you break out the big guns and crack skulls DYI style. You don't wait for the government to do it for you, because the powers that be control that shit.

On brand message for 2020 really.

The sky was full of stars, every star an exploding ship. One of ours.

Oh hey, was anyone else disappointed with Patton Oswalt's role this season? I remember it being played up that he was in Season 2...turns out he's just The Deep's talking gills during a drug trip. :bigfrown:

I like that Edgar probably doesn't have powers but still stands up to a psycho like Homelander. Violence doesn't work on Homelander, you can't just beat him up to come around to your viewpoint.

I would like some money because these are artisanal nuggets of wisdom philistine.

a question they haven't addressed and some people have pointed out is how DO they stop homelander? surely Vought has a failsafe of some kind in place - but what could it be? What's to stop him from going on a rampage and killing thousands of people like his fantasy in front of that crowd? Or turning on vought?

I don't think they do - Vought seems to behave like any big company, clever enough to create a world changing product, dumb enough not to consider the ramifications.

I don't know, edgar at least seems pretty shrewd. he seems well aware that he has a stable of dangerous psychopaths that could easily kill him

I think she's suicidal. She has convinced herself this is the way out one way or another.
