I think the only 'canonical' remaster there is is Sigh's Gallows Gallery. I never listened to it myself but I've heard that the original '05 recording was awful (this is the album where they claimed they recorded it with WWII sonic weapons) to the point where they remastered it 2 years later and is the one that you'll hear if you snag a dl the tracks.
I have wondered how much the bands have to do with the remastering process, or if they're purely at the mercy of the record label that owns the original masters.
There are cases of both, sometimes the bands and labels work on it together, but sometimes the labels want to repackage and update some of their big name catalogue and they want something new to offer so people will buy it again, thus the bonus tracks, bonus disc and remastering. I know some dudes who literally try to collect EVERY single version of every record that comes out, which is just bonkers to me, and I'd even say I was a collector of many things. I can only imagine being that focused in on one type of media!
For those who are interested in buying the Blind Guardian reissues, like I am, the band is definitely behind them. Charlie Bauerfeind is the one doing the remixing and remastering; he's been working with the band since Nightfall. And there's a series of interviews/documentaries on YouTube with him and the band discussing the history of each album.
Confessions of a twenty-something who only really started listening to non-orchestral music in 2008: I've never actually listened to Van Halen non-incidentally. Now seems like a good time to begin. Where should I start? Just debut to swansong?

Oh fuck yes, the new and possibly final BLUE OYSTER CULT album has arrived, and it's the heaviest one they've ever done, with some genuine metal parts! DAD ROCK 4 LYFE my brothers.
The album is interesting because it touches a lot of their styles, some songs are the heaviest they've done but others go with the old catchy melodic hard rock like their hit singles. It's very good stuff, a lot of old bands have been killing it lately: Kansas, Uriah Heep, Deep Purple, and now these guys with their first album in 19 years. You can certainly tell a couple of the guys are in their 70s (especially in the videos). I like that they also maintain the occult/conspiracy theory edge to a lot of the lyrics too, which was always one of their most interesting traits.
Semi-related to the remaster/reissue discussion, Linkin Park released a 20th anniversary edition of Hybrid Theory on Friday - it's not a band or album that I expect to get a lot of love here but the re-release is really well done. It's incredibly generous, with six discs and nearly four and a half hours of content, and a huge chunk of it is actually meaningful. There's the untouched album, the followup remix album, the original difficult-to-find EP, and three discs' worth of live tracks, b sides, and demos (and even the demos are substantially different and worthwhile for fans, with entirely different arrangements/lyrics, not just sloppier versions of the final tracks). I don't care enough to seek out a physical copy but it's apparently very well done too, with a large amount of unreleased interviews and photos from that time period. It's just an impressively all-encompassing collection of everything the band was doing in that era and makes the typical "here's one b side and maybe a couple live tracks" re-releases look absolutely skeletal in comparison.

At this point I think it's Grand-dad Rock. But boy this track came out of left field.
Huh, I didn't know he actually played anything, I'd always assumed he was just a (very good) vocalist.
I'm an absolute sucker for anything DEP related (and yes, it still hurts), so I'll give his album a little bit of time at the very least.
Did you check out the new album from The Number Twelve Looks Like You? Strong DEP vibes. Not the same, obviously, but it's nice in their absence. Greg's solo stuff doesn't do it for me. I love him as a vocalist, but it's clear to me Ben Weinman was the driving creative force behind the band.
Just got the full promo for this one, Heretical Sect, and it's righteous. New Mexico black metal, it's some of the same guys from the death metal band Superstition (also great).
I haven't been listening to metal much at all this year, but on a whim I decided to check if Circles of Ouroboros, one of my favorite black metal bands, had released anything recently, and saw that they dropped an album last February.
It's fucking sweet. Nothing outside of their norm; it's that hazy shoegazy black metal sound they've perfected, oozing with grey despair. I'd say this one is a bit more black metal and a bit less shoegaze than some of their stuff, but still very much in that spectrum. Vocals are a mix of snarly and clean; I actually dig their clean vocals more which is rare for me. The cascading black metal riffs are great, almost always holding my attention; but my favorite bits are when they slow down; it sounds like the band is drowning.
Definitely worth checking out for those who dig the band; for those who don't, this one won't change your mind. I always felt that these guys deserved more recognition than they get; they've been so prolific for like fifteen years, and while not every album has been good, the majority have been great.

So I know I said I'd give it a little bit of time... Yeah, not gonna happen. Just a bizarre album, couldn't even make it to the end. Ben clearly wasDillinger. Kinda makes sense, since they were writing amazing shit way before Greg joined. Still love Greg's vocals across all of DEPs newer stuff though.
I've heard The Number Twelve Looks Like You had grown up a bit in their sound since I'd last listen maaaany years ago, so I'll definitely give them a shot. Might scratch that mathy itch!
On a very different wavelength of metal Wayfarer have released A Romance with Violence. I was a little worried after the teaser track didn't tickle me quite like their previous album. But having the intro track and it's follow on had me grinning from ear to ear. Hopefully it keeps it up. Clicky for bandcamps.

ooo I was a big fan of Wayfarer's last album but didn't listen to the new single at all. Looking forward to sampling the whole album though!

I have no idea why I randomly thought of a band called Quo Vadis I remembered from 25 years ago this morning...a band whose only song I had heard was about a quarter of a song in a .wav format...but I looked up their debut album and this first song seems pretty good. A shame I never bought the album back then, but I suppose I can correct that. https://youtu.be/fjkQC2V-w0E
And I guess th Black Dahlia Murder has been around long enough that there's now upcoming bands that sound heavily influenced by them. Here's Summoning the Lich.

They do make a show of their technical chops and don't always rely on over-quirking, a thing bands like Periphery sometimes fall into.

They very much have the AGGROmellow vocal dynamic that's almost a requirement these days for 'core acts, and it can get a little tired.
The instrumentation though is just hrmph
