Veteran rewards are still in effect if you subscribed long enough to earn any and any of the like 30 different store exclusive unlocks are still claimable, but out of all of them only the Red Matter Capacitor was actually worth having (and they're all unlockable in the phoenix loot boxes, which are opened with in-game currency).
I keep being tempted to pick up STO again but I'm in this wierd place with it where I played it when it was new, then did another run three years later so I've already done it twice. I know there's new content in there since last time but my existing characters will be totally obselete by changing mechanics even if I could figure out how to use them again after all this time. That leaves me with starting again which is kinda ehhh since I don't want to play through 20 hours of shit I've done twice to get to the stuff I haven't.
Plus all the usual criticisms of the ground combat being janky as hell and I can't be bothered dealing with it to get to the stuff I like. Also I'm guessing the game still looks like ass? I am by no means a graphics snob but I remember this game looking distinctly PS2 era and the particular style has aged horribly. It looked dated eight years ago when it was brand new.
If any of this stuff has been fixed or made easier I might be willing to tip my toe back into in game transaction hell for a taste of that pretty decent ship combat.
Just got to the episode on Disco where they go to Talos IV, and while Melissa George is passably similar, if I didn't know better, if you told me Anson Mount was Jeffrey Hunter's son, I'd believe it.

You can skip pretty much everything you have already done or don't want to play. There is a skip button in the mission screen.
All I remember about STO was loving the ship combat and despising the grinding surface combat.

I really loved STO for a while (2011-2014 or so) but like LOTRO, another game I really want to like, it hit this point where the monetization became so in your face with little dollar symbols and premium currency icons and padlocks symbolizing unlockables cluttering up your screen that I just couldn't push past it.
Weirdly, while the ground combat is boring, I don't loathe it. I prefer it to TOR's awful Warcraft copy where you have a 60-icon hotbar full of powers that each give you +0.0025% critical chance for 1.83275 seconds, or The Secret World, where you can 1v1 a monster, but if one of its friends - who are all 2 feet away - aggro on you, you're instantly dead. And you can't run away because monsters in TSW had infinite aggro range. By comparison with those, STO's "I click, I click again, I click a thirtieth time" felt downright dynamic.
I'd pay good money for a non-MMO version of the game I could play with a few friends with all the premium bullshit removed. Plus that way I'd never have to see another USS ZYKLON-B or the other really awful internet trash I ran into.
ST:Os ground combat was downright painful at launch, relying on a poorly explained and even more poorly visualized expose/exploit system. You needed to kit your away team out with weapons and abilities with the ability to expose the enemies and then hit the exposed enemy with an exploit attack to vaporize them. Or you could just grind the enemy down with fire from your away team that you made up of four engineers capable of laying down a dozen phaser turrets to make combat a little faster.
Fortunately, while the expose/exploit system is still there, it's no longer required to make progress. They reduced the HP of the mobs so you could grind through a mob of klingons a lot faster than you used to be able to so you no longer need an away team full of turret jockeys.
But, yeah, like other's have said, the monetization of the game is ugly and distracting.

Anything I should NOT do? Happy to make mistakes, and be sub-optimal. But anything glaringly stupid I shouldn't do that might seem like a good idea at the time?
I remember playing one RPG, that if you took one race, half the content was unavailable. In another, dropping an innocuous item given to you, completely wrecked your quest tree. Stuff like that.
Each of the factions has some content to itself, but 90% of the campaign is shared around.
Probably the one thing not to do: Don't create a Jem'hadar character first. They start at level 60 and get a ton of free shit, but it's basically going to be truck after truck dumping nonsense in your yard and you're left to figure out what it's all for. All the other factions start at level 1 and pick stuff up gradually with at least half-assed explanations with each one.

Don't roll a Jem Hadar as a first character.
Set your power to max weapons in your ship.
It doesn't matter what career your captain has, they can fly any type of ship and do fine in it, no need to stick to cruisers in that engineer if you don't want to.

If anyone really wants to scratch an itch for starships going pew pew without having to deal with horribly obnoxious monetisation, Ages of the Federation really deserves more attention than its getting. Yes, it's a Sins of a Solar empire mod but the level of polish puts a lot of games to shame. The models and combat effects are just awesome, it's obviously been a labour of love for the devs.
This one is set in the dawn of the federation time period but these guys have also made another mod called Armada III, as the name suggests it's a spiritual successor to Armada II. It's weird that my favourite Star Trek games are actually unlicenced mods but they're honestly great. I wish to god someone would give these guys a real budget and let them go nuts.
e: you can pick it up on ModDB if you already own a copy of SoaSE Rebellion, its super easy to install on the steam version.

The game is pretty forgiving, a lot of the content is shared so there's not much FOMO there. The biggest difference you'll see between factions is in the ships you get.
Don't worry about being sub-optimal, unless you really botch up your build (like trying to go all torpedoes or something silly) you'll be fine.
Ship wise:
Cruisers: Slow turns, highest HP, tend to have an even distribution of fore/aft weapon slots, has the cruiser command options. These ships have the most engineering officer slots, lots of power manipulation and repairs
Escorts: Fast, hit hard, tend to break easily, weapons loaded to the front, can equip dual cannons. These ships have the most tactical officer slots, give you shoot better/faster/more powers.
Science: Medium maneuverability, thickest shields, has subsystem targeting to allow you to weaken specific systems on your target. These ships have the most science officer slots for space magic and buffing/debuffing.
Captain career paths follow the same general guidelines, Engineering has repairs, Tactical has self buffs better, Science has buff/debuff powers. You can put your captain on any kind of ship to either balance out the weaknesses or accentuate the strengths of the ship. An Escort with an Engineering captain will be tougher than an average escort, a Cruiser with a Tactical captain will hit harder than an average cruiser. Meanwhile a Cruiser with an Engineering captain will be a nigh-unkillable space brick, and an Escort with a Tactical captain will put out the DPS like crazy, often taking out targets in a single pass.

as for STO, I really don't want super-advanced high-tier ships, I just want to putter around in an Akira-class or something
I fly an Akira (technically an Alita, but it's one of the six classes that kitbash with the Akira, I use mostly Armitage and Thunderchild parts but could make a perfectly canon Akira with a trip to spacedock) and leave plenty of flaming wreckage wherever I go.
Bonus consoles from the tier 4, 5, and 6 versions make it a bastard of an escort, a point defense unit, a torpedo gunship, and a light carrier all in one. I've recently bolted on the Vengeance-class's broadside cannons and it's just an irresponsible mess of firepower.
I don't have a particularly advanced build, it was a common escort build way back at launch (a dual beam bank with beam overload to punch through shields, dual cannons and turrets for DPS, and quantum torpedoes with full spread to get all the NPCs very angry at me).
This build doesn't even enter into the modern metagame which has basically eliminates torpedoes and hyper-focuses on uniform loadouts, but it's still a thing of beauty in motion, I fly into an enemy fleet like a beam lance firing out of a wave of quantum torpedoes, cannons spraying everything, point defense system shredding anything frigate size or smaller, photon torpedo barrage on top of the quantum spread (another special power of the Akira line of ships) and broadsides hammering whatever makes it past the cone of death in front of me.
If there's anything left I just have my tactical officer bang his forehead on the console while my helmsman does loop-the-loops around and then mash the F button to collect my loot.
And if I die (because this is a VERY ridiculous way to get agro) I have a power that gives me a second wind, I use it to flip around and go ramming speed on whatever's left to spite them.

So the new season of Discovery has begun. I'm cautiously optimistic. I liked the pace and tone of the first episode. If they can build off of that instead of jumping straight into all the stakes, I think this could be a good season.
I liked SFDebris' note that Tasha earned Worf's respect just before she died, and then in Yesterday's Enterprise her valor (among others) earns the respect of all Klingons and averts war.

I watched the first couple of episodes of Lower Decks last night. For context, I'm not really a fan of Rick and Morty. The first episode was passable but wasn't really grabbing me. Episode 2 was definitely an improvement. I'm still undecided on the show as a whole. I like the deep lore cuts. I liked Dr Cat. I really liked the Bajoran security officer. I'm getting a little sick of this adorkable male protag character that keeps showing up in everything I watch these days. I'm not really digging the crude humor. It just doesn't fit in well with the rest of the franchise. I like Star Trek when it's being cheeky. A giant spider sucking off the protag for 5 minutes just went too far.
I'm going to keep watching but IDK if I'm going to end up liking the series as a whole.

That's ok. I can see how Lower Decks is not for everyone. No series can be. The best thing about having three (four if you count Orville, five if you include the planned Pike series) simultaneous shows is that we can all find one we enjoy.
Don't forget the second cartoon, Star Trek Prodigy, is still coming, and apparently has Janeway involved somehow.
Janeway and "It's different than lower decks" is basically the entire news cycle in the months since it was announced, so one would be forgiven for forgetting it exists.

Most people seem to agree that the first couple of episodes are the weakest. That's no guarantee you'll like it, but I think you might be surprised; either way, it's only 10 in the season, so you won't be blowing a huge chunk of time by forging ahead.

Almost six straight months of new Star Trek.
I watched the Discovery premiere. This show is something special when it's allowed to be hopeful.
Random Thoughts:
I deeply appreciate that Michael and Book's meet-cute can be summed up as "Oh, no, she's gorgeous/Oh, now, he's gorgeous."
Given that both Ash and Book betrayed her almost immediately after meeting her, and (as we know from previews) she dated both, I think Michael has a type.
Michael in Season 1 after the Ash reveal:
It's weird that post-apocalyptic Trek is where Discovery gets optimistic, but I'm here for it. Mad Max/Walking Dead dark apocalypses are bog standard boring. I like that the post-Federation galaxy is still vibrant, still growing even as it's missing something vital. Life went on after Rome. I'm glad the writers went with that version than a full Bad Future trope.
Season Speculation:
I think the Burn was the winning shot in the Temporal Cold War. It's too much of a deep-cut for Book to mention for it not to be relevant somehow. Note that the approximate date of the Burn, 3060-3080, is right around when Daniels et. al. were active.
Now, going into the season I figured the "Burn" was the Omega Particle and the end of Warp. That would've been neat, but I'll keep an open mind.
Whaaaaat? Is this another Trek show CBS has decided to keep to North America?
What the actual fuck? They can't bitch about piracy while giving 95% of the world no legitimate way to access their shows. At this point its tempting to out of sheer spite.
e: googling around its supposed to be on UK netflix but i don't see it anywhere, maybe it's just going to appear at 11pm or something dumb like that but i havent even seen it advertised anywhere

Apparently, negotiations for Lower Decks' international distribution fell through due to COVID, so maybe the same thing happened here. Why they can't hash it out over Zoom or a phone call, I have no idea.

Disco goes up on Fridays in the UK, I got an email about the new series this morning but I've watched the other 2 so THE ALGORITHM KNOWS
I was genuinely surprised that Lower Decks didn't just default on to there or Prime though, given that there's a trek show on each now.
