about half of those minor feats are inspired from various sources on DMsguild, or the pathfinder 2 phb, but they don't have the actual mechanical text anyway so its probably okay

in particular Character and Monster options from Dragonix are pretty great

I swear I spend way too much time prepping for D&D. I only run three hour sessions but probably brainstorm and pour through sources of inspiration for ten times that, at the very least.

It's not enough that I want to feature duergar, or the Underdark, or followers of the Raven Queen. I want to pour through every related module, sourcebook, and magazine article about each of those topics to mine all the good bits out. It's simultaneously fun and exhausting.

But now I know that "The Raven Queen's Misbegotten" in Dungeon Magazine #171 detailed evil Raven Queen followers I can use, like the Black Wings who break into the houses of those on death's door to slit their throats and get their souls to the goddess faster, the Bone Picker thieves' guild/corpse collectors, or the apocalyptic Cabal of the Reckoning Star who want to summon something that will destroy mortal existence so all souls will belong to the Raven Queen from their very genesis.

What kind of balance tweaks do you guys make for 5e?

There a couple things I file down.
    • Resurrection doesn't exist.
    • Healing word is a normal action, not a bonus action.
    • The healing spirit spell where you do a conga line of healing doesn't exist.

These are the only things that have really come up in my game. When I look at the new books, though, I keep rolling my eyes. In the !Greek setting, they added satyrs with straight up magic resistance as a racial feature. Really, guys? Really? We must be getting late in the edition cycle if the splat creep is setting in.

Yea we do this, but leave feeding a potion to someone else as an action.

We also have a rule where you gain an inspiration point on a nat 1 (Maximum 1 at a time).

Finaly, we do super crits and super crit fails. Meaning that if you roll a nat 1 or 20, you roll again and if you get the same result you keep rolling until you don't. Usually a double crit will give a small bonus or penalty to whatever you're trying to do, so you might gain a +1 or -1 to fighting zombies, or whatever. A triple crit will usually give something super useful like permanent advantage on initiative or a +2 on an ability score, depends on what happens.

We've seen 4 triple crits in the 8 years we've been playing, and no triple crit fails. It makes it fun.

for the rolls after the initial crit there are no modifiers or abilities applied, you're just rolling a straight d20. so I can't use lucky to try to get a better 2nd roll after the crit. We've had both types of characters and from what I can remember neither one of them had any major increases in double twenties and neither got triple.

The first triple twenty we saw was our DMs wife in like her second game ever get one a few years ago, then another character a couple years later got two triple twenties within a month of each other, then I got one last year with my paladin.

If it’s a high magic setting I usually add cantrip wands. Wands that let you cast attack cantrips at will in the 50-500g price range. I do this because I think bows are dumb and the ease of cantrip wands (no attunement usable by anyone) pushes players to use cantrips even if they might be less efficient than other ranged attacks simply due to ease of carry and use.

I am an absolute stickler for action economy

I let thief rogues use potions as a bonus action. But only thief rogues because they have an ability that should let them do so.

I prevent any +equipment from stacking on the same stat. So you cannot get a +3 armor and a +3 shield for +6 AC. You can get one or the other.

I allow players a save to fall prone instead of getting pushed into KO terrain like 4e.

I have a “only named NPC’s can produce character death” rule in order to get my players to stop asking my for NPC names and also to produce easy ways to up the tension and modulate the drama to produce better stories.

I have Mrs frizzle turn those stolen apparatus of Kwalesh into mechs so we can go to the moon and play lancer.

My house rule on potions is that to take one yourself it's a bonus action. To feed one to another person (ie: a downed party member) it's a standard action.

Ah, yes, potions. In my games, the standing order is that you take healing. The running joke is that you apply the potion to your forehead with sufficient force to explode. Need to get a downed ally up? Chuck a glass jar of magic spicy mayo in his face like you're doing a football spike!

The players decided to rationalize this with "you have to get the potion into your bloodstream!"

Well it turned out I vastly overestimated how much the party could get done in one session, but at least now I've pretty much got half of the next session's prep done ahead of time.

    Highlights:
    • One of my players who can't make it often is currently playing a wererat (using the Monster Manual statblock). He was supposed to escort the dragonborn sorcerer to where another wererat was because someone the second wererat knew is looking for him. The wererat PC tried to escape down a small tunnel in giant rat form and shoved his clothes in first before being stopped by the sorcerer's sleep spell. When he woke up the sorcerer, who had caught the wererat in a web spell, attempted to intimidate him into doing what he was supposed to before a troll the wererat was associated with snuck up and grappled the sorcerer, asking what was going on here. Eventually, the wererat PC convinced the troll to try and shove the dragonborn sorcerer into the narrow tunnel, promising he'd follow to help push the dragonborn down. As soon as the sorcerer was picked up by the troll the wererat shot down the tunnel immediately.
    • The party bard/cleric PC accompanied a priestess to help minister to the poor with healing spells. One supplicant was a man who had been bitten by a ghoul recently and was afraid he'd turn into a ghoul because of it. Despite repeated assurances that being bitten by a ghoul doesn't turn someone into a ghoul the man was still paranoid that maybe this particular ghoul had that ability. In the end the bard/cleric had to perform a fake ritual, the priestess had to cast cure wounds, and the bard/cleric had to make up a further ritual for the man to place a shiny rock on a particular set of stairs once a day for a week to be completely safe from becoming a ghoul.
    • Kruthiks began to attack soon after the party plus the priestess reunited. After two and a half sessions of mostly roleplay the party pretty much decided to go nova on the kruthiks, the sorcerer in particular blasting the holy hell out of the monsters with fireballs and firebolts. Unfortunately the sorcerer and bard/cleric are out of spells and the priestess only has a few uses of her staff of healing left, and there are more kruthiks between them and safety...
    • The wererat PC decided to trick the two halflings that wanted to meet with the second wererat into a trap, leading them into the darkness of the wererat warren before knocking both unconscious and biting them multiple times to ensure the halflings contracted wererat lycanthropy. He expects the wererat they were looking for will be pleased by this development. This was a pretty surprising twist for me, honestly, and it'll be fun trying to figure out what comes of this.

So, using this one-shot (with a few tweaks), I introduced four more people to the wonders of Dungeons and Dragons. I am pleased to report that they enjoyed their time that despite not finishing the adventure (only started on Floor 3 of 5), they pretty much scheduled for next week already to finish this.

    Tweaks I made:
    - The set up now is they are finishing an escort job to the town of Torn (name changed)
    - For a primer on combat, they get waylaid by bandits (with the bandit leader featuring his own tattoo, same as that in the adventure, to set up the plot a bit)
    - The merchant who hired them then pointed them to the Bishop as a recommendation, leading to the adventure proper.
    - I replaced the whole four-liner poem, as it was too cheesy for me; I just put in "Lathander Lies" to make it brief.
    - I also added a dour shopkeep for their pre-adventure shopping.

I am still having trouble as a GM on how to provide information when they do not know what they need to ask.

    The Half-Orc is... surprisingly ruthless.

    Funny thing just happened.

I'm looking at the Draconic language dictionary on the Forgotten Realms wiki for inspiration naming dragonborn and lizardfolk. I happened upon a word I recognized but didn't know was part of the Forgotten Realms Draconic language: Bejik.

An early 4E adventure featured a villainous spear-wielding dragonborn named Bejik Vuthaner who worships Zehir that I was planning to use for my own campaign. Thanks to the Forgotten Realms wiki I know now his name wasn't just a bunch of random syllables, but actually means "Savior of the Black Spear". Similarly, a dragonborn ghost in that same adventure has the name Tiburcaex, which means "born of the sword".

    Oof.

I liked DL as an initial series of books, and the Gold Box games, but I never liked playing in the setting. And their "Blow the world up 4 or 5 times within a single person's lifetime" metaplot basically ruined the future of the world for me.

  • SteelhawkSteelhawk Registered User regular
I don't know about that, but the one time I tried a campaign in the game, I felt like nothing we as a party did was anywhere close to being as important or awesome as Tanis and company.

That kinda changed with the jump in the storyline to the next generation. And the Knights of Takhisis was a brilliant idea. That was a new normal for Dragonlance that I dug. But then they went and changed it again and I had moved on to different t games by then.

But the Chronicles got me into D&D in the first place and I love them for it.

I really like the style and story of the Dragonlance: Fifth Age (Saga System) box set, but I agree that the setting at large seems more suited for books than adventures.

I need to dig out that old box set and give it a read through again sometime. I had trouble grokking the rules when I was younger, but as a seasoned old man I might be able to give it a better go.

I liked the Dragonlance novels as a teenager, but I tried rereading them as an adult and oof, they're pretty fucking terrible. I still like some of the characters like Raistlin and Sturm and even Tasslehoff, but the writing really was just bad. But it's a neat setting I guess, and if they did ever release a new version of it for 5e I'd definitely check it out.

Forgot to mention, regarding the oneshot I used: despite being described as one for a party of four level 3 people, it looks more like a party of level 1 guys. We ended the session at the third floor starting the fight with them unscathed and down just one spell slot. Add to that a Life cleric, five potions of healing, and an opportunity for a short rest next floor, the boss seems to be a cake walk, even for newbies.

Quick gist of the current dungeon:

    - Floor 1 - three Acolytes, all 1st level cleric type spell casters in the single digits
    - Floor 2 - puzzle floor
    - Floor 3 - A specter and two more Acolytes
    - Floor 4 - short rest floor and info dump NPC
    - Floor 5 - the boss

    Boss Stats:
    70 HP, 12 AC
    - Summon three Acolytes at start of first round, all at 1HP minion settings
    - 1/round Reaction to Misty Step upon getting hit
    - One-time reaction on getting hit in Round 2 to blind enemies w/in 60 feet
    - starting at round 3, 1/round Reaction to get knocked back 10 feet + prone on a failed Dex save
Available Attacks - Sacred Flame, Guiding Bolt (4 lvl 1 slots), Hold Person (3 lvl 2 slots), and a dinky melee staff attack

I was thinking of introducing a puzzle floor and another combat floor between floors 3 and 4 just to whittle down their resources just a bit more and make them afraid a bit, and up the boss damage a few notches. Advice?

I skimmed the posts on ENWorld and RPG.net about this. Apparently the authors were submitting drafts with content that WotC feared would be considered problematic (a scenario involving a love potion was mentioned) and the authors made adjustments that worked "within the framework of the novels", which could mean they were resisting the changes WotC wanted them to make.

In other news, Curse of Strahd Revamped apparently only has a few minor changes, the most prominent one being that a character who is very self-conscious about and tries to hide her prosthetic leg in the original version now is unbothered by it and makes no attempt to conceal it.

  • GlalGlal AiredaleRegistered User regular
All I know of Dragonlance is that the authors then went on to write The Death Gate Cycle, which includes a crazy wizard called Zifnab ("Fiz..., no can't use that one"), among other FUs to TSR. And the Death Gate books are dope.

The article I linked to sounded to me like Weis and Hickman had their WOTC reps changed from some they were originally working with to some who had a shifty history and clearly they did not get along with?
The lawsuit also claims that Wizards cancelled their License Agreement with Weis and Hickman because of a series of well-publicized controversies involving Wizards of the Coast over that company's hiring practices, as well as several controversies concerning racism in its Magic: The Gathering cards. Specifically mentioned in the lawsuit was criticism regarding Nic Kelman, the Head of Story and Entertainment for Wizards of the Coast, whose 2019 book Girls: A Paean was "subject to ongoing public discussions of whether his work contained or promoted misogyny and pedophilia." Kelman and Paul Morrisey became the editorial and oversight team for the planned Dragonlance novels in June 2020, replacing a pair of female editors previously assigned to work on the novels.

Oh shit, that's definitely not good either.

Still, the fact this is brought up makes it seem like they're trying to say WotC was being hypersensitive and reactionary regarding the content.

I guess we'll never know for sure unless more details about the drafts are revealed.

@override367 these are very fun! I might adopt them in the future. A couple questions/comments:

    1. I haven't exhaustively thought these through or applied them to the broad array of combinations that could be out there. They seem good, especially at super early levels, but most of them aren't grossly overpowered that I can see. What am I missing? Is there a common culprit?

    3. I don't understand some of the wording:
"You may choose a Race/Background feat at levels 1, 10, and 20. You may also select one of these eligible feats instead of a minor feat."

The part I did not bold is clear. The part I bolded is unclear. Is this correct:
Upon gaining an even level, I may, as many times as I want, (or is it once ever?) take a racial feat instead of a minor feat. This does not affect my ability to take racial feats at levels 1, 10, and 20, meaning I could get two at levels 10 and 20. The term "one of these eligible feats" means that I must still meet the racial / other requirements of the feat.

    Similarly,
"YOU GET ONE FREE CLASS FEAT AT LEVEL 5, AND A SECOND AT LEVEL 15," and "CLASS FEATS CAN BE CHOSEN INSTEAD OF MINOR FEATS ONCE BEFORE LVL 10, ONCE AFTER."
means that on once level 2, 4, 6, or 8, and once again on level 12, 14, 16, 18, or 20 I may take a Class feat instead of a minor feat, so long as I did not already trade out the minor feat for a racial feat, and these, if selected, are in addition to the class feats taken at levels 5 and 15.

    4. In games where I play with just adults, I might write broadly ingrained racial biases into the fluff/setting - "elves hate humans because of the wars/history starting when . . . " etc, as part of the story. However, the optional feats presented here land more heavily on the mechanical side of things, with themed tie-ins that are pretty transitional/loose.

For those reasons, and for general purposes, I would recommend that, in your role as pseudo-publisher, you should consider the racial feats that "bake in" racism instead be re-flavored to something along the lines of "ancestral enemies," which captures the flavor I think you're looking for, allows opposed races to party together and still logically take the relevant feats, and sidesteps the "a hero, except cancer" issue that some tables aren't interested in or ready to deal with. Reverting back to something more complex is easy for the right group and setting.

Just busted open my box set that came in today. (It was like Christmas here with three different preorders arriving!)

I don’t know if it’s worth the price to most folks, I got it at a decent discount utilizing Amazon’s preorder price guarantee thing though and I’m going to sell my hardcover book for around $20-30 probably so that will make this box set cost me only like $15? Pretty sweet in my estimation.

    The box is gigantic though.

Whoa boy I need to clarify those instructions, for my players its fine they have a long discord post pinned about it.

Basically, racial feats, level 1 10 and 20. you can't pick them instead of a minor feat.... that's a typo, they're more powerful, just like class feats

With class feats, you can choose class feat INSTEAD of a minor feat on 2, 4, 6, or 8, if you want to - And the once again at level 12, 14, 16, 18, or 20, in addition to the free selections you get. The idea being that they are generally better than minor feats, but not always

I didn't write all of these, many of the racial feats were written by my roommate, but I get what you're saying. So far it hasn't really been an issue, someone asks for another race's racial feat I've never said no, they just gotta give me a reason (or a justification in the case of like, a fire genasi feat where its based entirely on biology)

EG: in my SKT game the Dragonborn character was raised in the (xenophobic) elven city of Syngorn, and has some elven feats

edit: goddamnit I see what you mean, someone literally renamed the feat to "gnomish racism" before I copied the sheet and made it read only, this is what it WAS called:

I mean it's still problematic in its own right or whatever but lol

I probably should have proofread this, my players have full edit rights on the document, I'm surprised there's no dick based feats in here

I should go through and reformat this to look really nice and also proofread it
