I legitimately don't understand the appeal of watching sports. Or competition in general.

I've never been into sports, but when I played Dota I watched tournaments because watching people way better at the game than me was cool.

Also part of what I think makes speedruns cool.

Probably the main reason I don't really watch sports is that they're too long
Football games are like 3 hours, baseball is usually shorter but there's so much nothing in between anything actually happening

Baseball is kinda unique with how much doesn't happen. Football has stuff happening all the time!

Just gotta throw in a constant low low low frequency sound, skip the psychology and get straight to messing with the brain's hardwiring.

Sure, you can't get down to infrasound levels of fucking with people (not just anxiety and a sense of presence, but building to full-blown hallucinations in some people), but it still works to build that false sense of presence.

Hell, the low constant hum that plays in the Oolacile Abyss in the Dark Souls DLC still makes me feel uncomfortable the whole time I'm there, and that's a sound you can clearly hear and I've done that zone a zillion times.

Soccer and hockey are my favourite team sports in large part because, unlike the other "major" sports in America, there aren't (usually) constant stoppages in play. Much more of a rhythm and flow.

Edit: but then again tennis is one of my favourite sports so. shrug emoji

I've always said I have no time for sports that don't have a running clock.

The clock should only stop for period breaks and maybe a small number of timeouts

something something can't run out the clock in baseball

that said this season was already dead to me since in-person attendance was ruled out, so whatever

Coming from Aussie rugby league to NFL is so weird.

So much of American sports is based on like stats that are honed down to a nub and I feel like for me that sucks the fun out

It's one reason why college athletics is so popular here.

Baseball is one of the more chill sports in the world and also has the capability to be the most tense fucking thing imaginable. When the Cubs beat the Cardinals in the playoffs a few years back I was basically vibrating at the end.

I think I was pushed away from watching sports because my dad is so into, like, all of them, that 50% of the weekend was just TV constantly being tied up with tennis and F1 and motoracing and (depending on season) skiing, and I resented the hell out of it as a kid.
Oh, you were watching a show? Tough cookies, it's time for another sport where it's the exact same activity for 2 hours straight. That ball sure is passing back and forth.

One interesting/depressing thing is that houses of worship are basically the last bastion of small scale live music in the country.

While I was watching that, my thought process went something like this:

“Wow, I can’t wait to see the original video that SNL is parodying. Wait...oh no....OH NO!”

I remember once seeing a small local band play a short free show out in front of a best buy.

Back in like 2007 or something though.

I mean, he seemed pretty good to me. Like, competent. A better choreographer could probably use him better.

now that the Cubs have won their world series I kinda want to go back to when they were just dogshit for a while, when the team loses 90 games it's much easier to just chill out and enjoy the highlights when they come

(I don't want to go back to them being dogshit I'm just talking myself into looking forward to it because they're definitely going to be dogshit soon)

I don't know about that, a lot of pubs do open mic nights and small band concerts. My town does free concerts in the park on Wednesdays in the summer.

properly editing a full amomg us group together has to be a nightmare

most among us content I've seen on youtube just post the footage from theur perspective under the assumption that most if not all of the other players will do the same on their own channels

People who play in churches sometimes get paid. I think that is what he is referring to. With only a couple of exceptions everyone I know from music school who is still in the field has a church job.

EDIT: Like, as someone who is trying to make it in music if you are a local band trying to get by you are mostly doing free live gigs to try to get your face out there and it is a long time and a lot of work before you see any real return. You’ve got church gigs and you’ve got wedding gigs but they are tough to get.

Compare that to a short few decades ago when a certain no name band that would eventually turn into the Beatles were hired by a pub to play 5 days a week. They weren’t that good but if you wanted to fill a bar with music that’s what you had to do. Being able to be a half decent musician and actually make a living for a while on your half decent playing while you improve your craft is basically impossible nowadays.

I'm 90% sure the only reason why my dad still goes to church is to play in the band, and he's a chaplain.

Ah see motorsport is the BEST thing to watch on TV. When you go to the track you mostly just get to see cars whipping past so fast you can barely tell which is which, and you only get to see a tiny part of the action.
On telly you get to see pretty much ALL of the action, with commentary and slow motion replays, and chatter between drivers and teams, and stats and times and other stuff too.

you mean "car go round for 5 hours"

I previously wouldn't have expected that level of condescension from you, I thought you had more respect for me than that.
