"Nice catch, don't ever fuckin' do it again"

Major League was a mainstay in the family VCR as a child. I still get goosebumps during the final out and that final call, even as a lifelong Cubs fan, still puts the hugest smile on my face.

Goddammit, I miss sports comedies. Why did they ever stop making sports comedies?

Really other than Romy and Michelle and Josie and the pussycats. Another movie I am not ashamed to like is the original Bring it on

In that same vein I liked Stick It and that one movie where Tommy Lee Jones commands a cheer squad but I have not seen either since release so maybe they suck I don't know.

I’m assuming this is from a sequel because it’s not in the original movie.

My best friend is joining me for dinner & a movie tonight.

    He requested a horror movie.

And through dialogue I discovered that he has never seen, and has virtually no knowledge of Peter Jackson's The Frighteners.

So, obviously, we're watching that tonight.

I am very excited as I haven't seen it in at least 15 years (if not longer).

There are a lot of fun performances, but none beat out Jeffrey "My body is a roadmap of pain" Combs in my esteem.

The Frighteners is very dumb but fun

    Edit:

I rewatched The Frighteners recently. It's fun and it's got a nice Sam Raimi energy but it's also.......dumber than I remembered.

Like, take the ghostbusting scam. It's a fun idea - a guy who uses real ghosts for a scam ghostbusting business. But this time around I found myself wondering: what exactly do Frank's ghost associates get out of the scamming? Frank does it for money, but the ghosts don't have any use for the money. And the ghosts don't seem to be sadists who get off on scaring people. Frank absolutely doesn't do anything to inspire their loyalty - he treats the ghosts like garbage. And the ghosts know for a fact that they live in a universe where hell exists, so you'd think they would not want to tempt fate with bad behavior. ...It would be easy enough for the filmmakers to give them some kinda motivation - some sort of leverage that Frank has over them, or something the ghosts get out of the scams, but they apparently didn't want to bother.

The film on the whole just feels weirdly unconcerned with its characters and their motivations. Take the relationship between Patricia and her mother.
Patricia lives with her overbearing mother and they have a very acrimonious relationship. We eventually learn that Patricia, like her boyfriend, is a cartoonishly evil mass murdering sociopath, and we eventually see her kill her mother. Which made me wonder, well, why didn't she kill her sooner? It's something Patricia seems very eager to do. There isn't even a hint that she's conflicted about the killing or that she has even a sliver of affection for her mother. Her and her boyfriend's motivation is literally 'kill as many people as possible'. So, like, why did she live with her mother for decades?

...I also could never get a handle on what the heck Jeffrey Combs's character's deal was.

But here's my least favorite thing about the movie: it seems to reveal that
Frank killed his wife in a car crash - which made me go 'ah, finally, some emotional depth!' but then the movie takes backsies and goes 'nope, never mind, the wife was killed by the two dimensional bad guys'.

Which made me sigh and think, ah, yet another movie that wants to have a redemption arc but is too timid to have their main character do anything too bad.

In spite of all that though yeah it's fun seeing Michael J Fox run around with ghosts and stuff. It's not great but it's solid (or should I say translucent!!). I give it a C. (C for Crypt!!)

I'm guessing since Frank is the only one who can actually see and talk with the ghosts, they hang around with him because they have nothing better to do and it's nice to interact with the living on a person-to-person basis.

Yeah, I think its a simple matter of Frank offering them a real, personable engagement.

He's a vehicle for some sense of the real world they had when they were alive.

For whatever reason, they didn't pass on to Heaven and/or didn't think it was an option, and they're looking at a hundred years or more (considering the Judge) of further existence, as they fade into decrepitude. That is a lot of time to fill, especially since they probably don't sleep. Nor do they seem to be capable of interacting with the living world without great effort, so they're mostly stuck as passive observers.

In their place, if I found someone who could see and hear and would talk to me... unless they were a total ass, I'd probably stick to them like ectoplasm.

Within the first twenty minutes of The Frighteners I turned to my best friend and said, "Now I know you're seeing a lot of loud performances but the loudest performance hasn't even showed up yet."

And then a bit later it finally arrived.

"This is Jeffrey Combs and he is the loudest performance you will see in this movie."

By the end of the movie my best friend remarked, "I don't know who this guy is but he's doing some real next level stuff in this role."
