The nice lady at the farmers market said that everyone was buying small birds this year, and they weren't sure what they were going to do with all their big ones, so I've got an 18 lb bird brining right now in preparation for smoking tomorrow to feed three people.

Nothing but turkey leftovers for a week. Oh no. So sad. So upset.

Brining+smoking you are doing gods work

My roommate doesn’t like the vast majority of Thanksgiving staples, so I’m flying solo this year and just making myself a Thanksgiving lunch:

Smoked turkey, stuffing, cranberry Wensleydale cheese, and French fried onion sandwich.

Roast fingerling potatoes with garlic and sour cream.

Sautéed green beans with mushrooms and French fried onions.

Smashed squash with molasses, maple syrup, and walnuts.

Strawberry cheesecake ice cream from Coolhaus for dessert.

Peruvian style roast chicken with green sauce, cream biscuits, buttermilk cornbread, green bean casserole (no fresh ingredients allowed), home made and box stuffing, sous vide thyme carrots, scratch apple pie, canned and home made cranberry sauces (I've been on a kick, so we now have traditional, maple apple walnut, and cinnamon versions). Gonna be a good one for the partner and I, nothing too hard aside from the pie really. Still super sad to not go see either of our folks, but it'll be nice to stay with the cats and give them a little nibble from the cheese board.

Bird’s in the refrigerator. I will remove it this evening.

    Sunday we feast!

Mine's simple this year since it is just me. Roast turkey breast (one of those ~5lb. half-a-bird cuts), mashed potatoes and peas, broccoli with butter, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie for dessert.

Should last me a few days, especially since work is picking up so I won't have much time to eat and fall asleep watching football.

edit: All store-bought too, I don't know how to make any of that.

I just got back from a pre-thanksgiving-iso-camping-trip to the Valley of Fire
...I don't think I realised how tired I was till I sat down and opened my laptop. Feel quite dizzy.

But anyway it meant I got to have a break from work but also minimise plague exposure. I think the longest conversation we had with a stranger was about a flock of big-horned sheep some fellow hiker had seen in the rocks.

edit: oh I think I meant to post this in the Quarantine thread. Well to make it thanksgiving appropriate: I'm about to bake a Guinness chocolate cake, as is traditional with my people in times of celebration.

    Menu for tomorrow includes:

    Turkey with herb butter
Cornbread stuffing with bacon and shallots
    Mashed potatoes and gravy
    Mushrooms en croute
    Green peas
    Honey roasted multi-colored carrots
    Jellied cranberry sauce
    Crescent rolls
    Black olives

Gonna be a lot of cooking but should be delicious!

The only set in stone component of the Lament Configuration that is Food Crime Thursday is that every meal will contain pork.

    Dressing is in the oven!

Gf seed bread, cornbread, large yellow onion, 4 celery stalks, 6 oz. minced chicken of the woods mushroom, 1lb fresh sausage, 4 cloves garlic, 1 tbsp fresh rosemary, sage, basil, salt, pepper, 1 beaten egg, and 2.5 cups of chicken broth

    the kitchen is smelling goooooood

edit: I also grated a half cup of parmesan cheese because I had it and can't possibly see how it would hurt the situation

Catering Thanksgiving this year because the wife is 37 weeks pregnant so this shit could go down any day now.

Feels weird to just be chilling out and not cooking all day.

Also the Macy Parade started and holy hell I had an unexpected visceral reaction to seeing the NYPD escort.

I am in the business of saving lives.

Family plans were cancelled (of course) and I didn't feel up to doing any shopping before today, so I've got nothing seasonal in the house. Maybe I'll make something next week, when all the fixings on store shelves are deep discounted.

    We'll get back there someday.

I woke up at 5.30 for no goddamn reason so I don't even know what to do with myself.
I don't have any groceries but I'm a little scared to hit the supermarket in case people are doing bonkers last minute Thanksgiving runs.

Go to a convenience store. You should be able to get something hot fast. Grocery store usually taper off about noon

Getting our Thanksgiving dinner from a local restaraunt this year. They are doing curbside pickup with re-heat instructions. You get a full thanksgiving meal and a dessert. Since it's just my wife and I this year we didn't feel like going crazy. She is making deviled eggs and homemade Mac and Cheese though, so I am excited for that.

I'm thankful for all ya'll this year, and all my friends who have taken this Covid thing seriously and are being safe. Also thankful for being able to play Dungeons and Dragons over the internet. It's been a social lifesaver this year.

It’s just my wife and kids this year.

We’re cutting up a bunch of cheeses and meats and making a kind of charcuterie board then cooking a ham.

The ham is going to mostly be eaten later on as sandwiches

Managed a crude approximation of a thanksgiving meal, then ran out for a pumpkin donut and coffee (drove past the grocery store which looked packed, so I just skipped trying to pick up anything there).

Wait what's this about a marathon

In 1991-1995 on Comedy Central MST3K had Turkey Day Marathons with new host segments between films. In 1997 there was one on Sci-Fi, then from 2013-today there have been online Turkey Day marathons, again with new host bits. The current one has bits with the MST Live Show people and also Jonah from the Netflix seasons.

The online Turkey Days have had movies selected by voting.

It is watchable on Twitch, Youtube, and about a hundred other ways.

Yeah there are two new shorts that were done with Joel, Elvis Weinstein (Original Mad and Tom Servo voice, and Bill Corbet (Second Crow), that were done as incentives to raise money to rebuild the Mizigi office, a Native American non-profit group in Minneapolis, that was destroyed in the George Floyd protests.

I know I'm old when I still refer to the Mike Nelson crew as "new people". That is awesome! Bill and Joel seem like especially good eggs.
