Maybe you could try one of the knockoff ones, like XP pen or Huion?

There have been some pretty crazy deals on them lately, and they seem to have good reviews.

I'm glad I ended up springing for a screen tablet, it's a lot of fun to draw on. Never quite clicked with the non-screen ones.

I dunno how good the non-Intuos stuff is, though it might have improved a lot since the last time I played

tbh the only tablet device I've found to be anywhere near as good as cintiq stuff is the newer iPads, and they're not super cheap. Also have more limited software availability, so might not fit your needs

(edit: that said, I'm using the ipad almost exclusively for digital these days, but I'm also not doing a lot of painting/realism right now).

Well, I guess the question is, do you want to spend $650 on those dreams and ideas?

I always feel like an ass giving advice involving suggesting anybody spend any money on anything, because I know not everyone has a bunch of cash to throw around. But if you've got the money, I'm sure it's probably a nice thing to have. You might use it more than you think! Or maybe you'll let it collect dust in a corner somewhere!

I am not being helpful right now!
    :(

I dont like spending $600+ on anything if I can help it. Let alone my dumb dreams and ideas.

    Hey. HEY.

Your dreams and ideas aren't dumb. I will fight you if you keep calling your dreams dumb.

If you want the Cintiq/ Wacom quality, and you could afford it, it's worth noting that Cintiqs absolutely retain their value second hand. You could grab one and then if you end up hating it, you could resell for a good chunk of that purchase price.

Hello artsmen, it’s a surprise I’ve arrived just when I wanted to know about tablets. I really wanna get one, but I’m not sure which. I’m thinking an iPad, but what I’d honestly want if such a thing exists is:
    • Has a screen.
    • Can go on the internet, which I imagine is universal.
    • The pen/screen has a paper-like give to it rather than being slippery glass... maybe not possible.
    • Is like... $250 or less.
Oh, and the screen can be A4 sized, no biggie.

    What would you get?

Under 250, eh? Not sure on that front, but maybe a used ipad with the first gen apple pencil?

You can get matte screen protectors for any size ipad very cheap on Amazon. I have one for mine, makes for a great drawing surface.

  • Endless_SerpentsEndless_Serpents Registered User regular
Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I might bite the bullet and go up to $400. I’m so glad to hear you can get some matte surfaces!

  • tynictynic PICNIC BADASS Registered User, ClubPA regular
yeah I got the PaperLike screen protector for my ipad and it's great, genuinely feels like paper but without grabbing the pen nib.

  • IrukaIruka Registered User, Moderator mod
are you using a particular brand of protector?

  • tynictynic PICNIC BADASS Registered User, ClubPA regular
  • I used to use a piece of paper on top of my intuos for the texture, until I realized over time it was wearing down my pen nibs like it was sandpaper.
So I'm curious if the Apple Pencil + screen protector holds up better over time (I've only used the Pencil once or twice so I don't remember what the nib material is like, maybe it's a non-issue?)

I've had to replace my nib once, but to be fair I'm pretty horrible to all my styluses (styli?) and I think that was mainly cause I kept dropping it and it got dinged/chipped.
I'm not seeing any noticeable wear on the current nib, and I've been drawing on my ipad pretty consistently all year, so I seem to be getting my money's worth.

    Story time.

Back in the days of art forums; Sijun, EatPoo, ConceptArt, etc., I posted on pretty much all of them. Each one had its own peculiarities or a dominant style among the artists. One of the forums, the name of which I can't remember, focused on Western cartoon illustration. It wasn't as well known as the others, but it was important to me, because of a connection I made.

One day, I got a PM from another member. He was a French artist, whose style was similar to mine, and he wanted to do an art exchange where we drew each other's characters. I was ~18 at the time and it was my first time interacting with an artist from another country, so it was a cool moment. I can't remember which of his characters I drew, but I know he drew a rabbit woman I made back when I had trouble drawing human noses.

It was a fun little exercise and that was the end of it. Eventually I stopped posting on that forum and focused on others, but every so often I would search his username and see if he was still making art. It was cool to see how his work developed over the years. While I started veering more towards fantasy art, he started doing animations and his style moved in that direction.

I'd almost forgot about the dude until a year or so ago, when I got onto Instagram and randomly thought to look him up. It seems he's made a decent career for himself, with some successful comics and animated series. I started following and noticed that he was in the middle of a crowdfunding campaign, so I looked into it. The campaign was for a second season of these animated sex edutainment shorts. Knowing someone on a forum years ago wasn't enough to get me to back it, but the first season was available for free, so I decided to check it out.

That shit had me dying. I blasted through the whole thing in a sitting. It was well made, educational, and surprisingly progressive. There was lgbt representation and people if various ages and body types. Mind you, they were all cartoon animals with visible genitalia, but still. Moreover, I understood the problem the studio explained in their pitch. It was too explicit for a standard streaming platforms, but not explicit enough for adult streaming platforms. I decided the project was worth backing. I pitched in enough to get an artbook as a reward. I believe the campaign concluded with 7 or 8 episodes being funded.

Covid slowed down production, but they've been keeping people updated and recently announced that the physical rewards were starting to get shipped. They also sent people a link to the digital rewards. I checked out the digital artbook, which mainly featured the series' resident expert, an anthropomorphic cat doctor. Like the series, some of the pictures are tame and some are explicit. That's when it hit me.

Somewhere out there is a book of furry porn, making its way to my door. It's all very well drawn, but it is what it is.

It's not the only artbook I've recently acquired. I also got collected works of Mucha and Bouguereau. Both are great, but I don't have a decades old connection to either artist.

  • <wakes up, groggily skims post>
yeah man I mean we'd all probably chip in $15 for a kickstarter book of Alphonse Mucha's furry porn works no worries

  • On a totally different note, I kinda wanna show off these 3d print models I made for my nieces, based on characters they came up with while I was drawing stuff for them over Zoom.

I'm going to jump in on the new art tech question. I'm curious for those of you who iPad - does it serve to do most of your other computing? Could teach on Zoom with it (IE shared screen slides and Zoom running). I understand iPads are a lot better in the pen functionality and palm rejection. I've been using a surface pro 3, and it's palm rejection tech is so shit I turn off the touch screen to draw. Which is tedious. I cracked the screen, so now that's moot anyway. Trying to figure what to do on a replacement. Likely to get a Surface Pro 7, as I understand they've fixed the palm rejection problem on that, but I'm wondering if an iPad or iPad Pro might do all the things I need.

I need to be able to type shit, and run classes on Zoom as mentioned. I know it can handle my other work functions (online therapy platform) because they have a dedicated app. Just wanted to see what your thoughts were on the relative feel of microsoft's pen-tech vs Apple's, and if you do all your computer on an iPad.

So I have an iPad pro, but do not use it as my main device. Honestly, I do not think it's a good replacement for a decent laptop or desktop. It's a fantastic drawing device, and very fun for browsing the internet or watching Youtube, but I would not do any 'serious' non-art work on it.

Take this with a grain of salt though, since I absolutely despise Apple's whole ecosystem. If any non-Apple tablet came close to the drawing experience, I'd have gotten it in a heartbeat over the ipad.

  • Anthrax! Please.Anthrax! Please. Registered User regular
I have pulled the trigger on an ipad pro already, as time was getting short. I called apple support and they 'assured me' that the pro can handle the uses I have told them I needed, but we shall see. I am non-zero levels of tech savvy and I suspect I can make it work.

Worst case is I buy a Raspberry Pi to manage the other tasks I require. It'd be a fun project to dig back into some Linux. Ask me about that one time I deleted my drive partition while I was writing my dissertation!

I also bought a PaperFeel screen cover because I respect @tynic even though you once literally accused my sense of foreshortening of being "gay." In itself a sign of how long ago that was.

  • ProspicienceProspicience The Raven King DenvemoloradoRegistered User regular
I agree with just about everything @Didgeridoo mentioned, just wanted to add that you should be totally good with the ipad pro. Mine is a couple generations old and honestly lightroom runs better on it than on my desktop PC (which is about 6 years old now). And I've been running multiple things at once on it, it's not my main machine, but honestly I've talked to professional photographers who straight up use theirs as their main editing/everything else machine.

Yes. Back in the days. I got my username changed from Anaximander and then got married and went to grad school and left the forums. I could mention the Old Names of the Forumers Who Once Tread But Are Mostly Banned but that seems superfluous.

Learning the planes of the head from Marco Buccis skillshare class has ruined my viewing experience. Can't watch anything involving people without thinking about the size of their Glabella or the way the planes where their cheeks and jaw meet or the 1-2-3 pattern in the mouth to chin area. It's really distracting.

"Give me the pencil you dirty ape!"
    "He can draw?"
    "He can draw?!"
    "I can SIIIIIIIIIING!"

You should do what I should do but aren’t, draw from life using a limited palette (black, 1 grey, white etc.) to narrow your focus and get to grips with the fundamentals before attempting a style.

    Edit: draw a cat.

@Peas: I dunno if this helps, but I made a simple script to spit out random art prompts. You can turn off certain subjects if you're not interested in them.

I know there's a ton of these out there, but I wanted something I could easily edit myself for my own needs- feel free to use as a springboard/save out the .html and edit to add/subtract subjects/prompts/terms to suit your own needs.

I don't have the ability to do like 99% of the prompts but man that is an amazing tool for brainstorming ideas, definitely an eye opener on what I can do for practice instead of just copying stuff. Also I like how it generates artist names and styles so I can google them, I don't really have much knowledge of amazing artists.

Thanks for sharing, really appreciate it!
