That is Mildred, who has decided to grow her hair out.

Lottie is just over eighteen, deducing from Wicked Things (which is on sale right now, ahem) starting in the middle of Lottie's summer break between GCEs and university and lasts... I think a couple of weeks in-universe?

Chronologically we're missing all of year 11 and sixth form. When Bad Machinery ends they're all year 10s I think? 15 yos. Wen-Tack/The Great Unboxing (which suggested the start of a sixth form arc) has been retroactively disappeared and decanonized, so the gap lies in between. Exams and nominal childhood friendships finally dissolving.

Lottie forgetting to file that application for Latin class really shapes relationships, which is painfully realistic.

e: Hard Yards (which still contains story elements like Linton and Mildred dating or Shauna/Lottie/Claire/Blossom's band) still seems to be up

i... have to admit I haven't been following any of John Allison's comics since Bad Machinery ended

glad we're getting back to these characters, but I sorta missed everything that happened with them in between grade school and... whenever this is? How old is Lottie now?

i think i should read the priest comic or whatever that just finished up since allison’s been hinting at a crossover with that and bad machinery in the future (or at least lottie will be in it)

i'm still kinda bummed that allison lost interest in bad machinery

it was really good! I loved the way it was structured and paced, and the way it all just sorta faded away into nothing instead of getting a proper ending was such a disappointment that I haven't really been interested in keeping up with anything he's done since. i don't wanna get invested in his stuff just for him to get bored again.

Allison took all his write-about-young-adults energy and channelled it into Giant Days, which is excellent

the characterization, structure, and pacing are still there, what got toned down was the undercurrent of wackiness since Scary Go Round

New Bobbins suggests the direction he originally wanted to take his Tackleford cast - but yeah, it would not have been printable. Too many adult themes.

it really was my absolute fav comic and i’m bummed it just drifted away after he wrote for like...8 years or something? but yeah giant days is really good at least

i just dunno why allison keeps going back to the shelly well. you got tired of writing giant days but you’re still writing the same character you’d been writing stories for since like 2000??

anyway i still love allison’s comics

    Lottie is replacement Shelley Winters

no, that's wrong. She's replacement Esther de Groot. Esther is replacement Shelley.

Allison needs one character to be the witty, snarky woman at all times

I feel like Lottie is likeable as a child but probably less likeable as an adult

I think that's probably true of pretty much everyone.

An extremely good side arc in Giant Days involves Lottie being an incredibly adorable sidekick to Esther during one home visit and then an off-putting and somewhat rude and dangerous friend in a years later visit. I think Allison is very good at portraying the passage of time in his characters and the good and bad that comes from that.

Counterpoint: as a child I was mysteriously sticky and a boring conversationalist at the best of times, these days I am universally beloved.

I am so angry right now. Who takes eggs from alternating ends of the carton working toward the middle? Not good people, I'll tell you that straight up.

Plus, this whole chart presumes you're keeping your eggs in the door, which is a bad move if you live in a country that washes their eggs like America. Washed eggs need stable temperatures to stay fresh.

Europe, indulge in whatever egg perversions you like, I guess you've earned it by maintaining your natural shell coatings.

Edit: hang on, are you all taking the whole carton out of the fridge every time? How many eggs are you using?

Edit2: oh, right. Families. Carry on, then.

I'm apparently True Neutral. Or possibly Lawful Neutral, it's harder to tell with a six-egg carton.

wouldn't chaotic evil just have the eggs wherever

    just strewn about the fridge

True Neutral I guess. Take the carton, open it, grab the nearest egg, put the carton back.

Look, you take 'em from one side, and then that gets too hard because you ran out of eggs on that side, so you swap the carton around and take them from the other side. Lawful Good makes sense!

    Neutrals are the real monsters.

I just grab an egg. I don't care what end of the carton it's from.

Apparently I'm a true neutral which is on brand I guess

    I'm LG.

I take eggs from one end of the carton, but then it's heavier on one side, so I take from the other side next time.

You must have forgotten to perform the ancient rite, it works fine for me.

Yeah, you want to read it all the way to the end and only then bookmark it.

Doesn't help to re-bookmark it though. Then you MUST perform the Rite.
