How many dead seniors is enough to allow outdoor movement restrictions?
Also, it’s fucking January, just stay inside until spring, vaccines are on the way.
Yeah, the same government that egregiously bungled this pandemic is gonna handle the vaccine roll out super well.
Even if done poorly, within the space of a few months there will be large numbers of the most vulnerable vaccinated. This will affect the restrictions governments are putting in place.
Ontario administered twice the doses today of the next highest province.
I mean, Doug Ford is still garbage but for some reason your province voted for him so you’re kind of stuck until your next election.
15 years in power for the other party tends to lead to new garbage settling in!
I would certainly hope Ontario administered double the doses of anyone else - it's got nearly double the population of the second largest province. Like, if my dumb province sucked up 200k of the 500k doses Canada and fucked this up even worse I'd be furious; the people in other province don't deserve the pain of how stupid and greedy the Ford government truly is.
But, to your credit, once the most vulnerable are helped, hopefully they fuck right off with this curfew business. We really should not be giving any of these fools a post-pandemic polls bump.
I mean, it's not like there weren't alternatives to Doug Ford to vote for!
I'm watching Dr. Williams from Ontario right now. I don't usually watch the news conferences myself...this guy is awful. He just rambles on and on and can't answer a simple question. I'm so angry.
Not a big fan of overnight curfews, because that's when I head to my local Shopper's to do my shopping -- when precious nobody else is around. Especially when it really seems like the big spreading problems are and remain workplaces and schools.
A curfew for people is entirely unnecessary. Just force businesses to close and that will solve the problem
Quite the opposite: the curfew is for people. Specifically people who haven't been respecting the existing restrictions and meeting their friends discreetly for dinners and partys. These are the people whose spreader events will be curtailed or punished by the curfew.

Those people aren't going to stop. They'll either just go home before curfew time or like stay in a guest bedroom or something

People who work until 5pm or later aren't going to have a dinner party that must end before 8pm (to account for the time to get home before 8pm), and most hosts do not have a spare bedroom nor are most guests interested in a sleepover after dinner (unless it's that kind of dinner party :winky:).
So let's get this straight.... My sister can't walk down the street in QC but it would be totally cool to jump in a plane with a few hundred people and go to Cabo?
Government restricting freedom of movement is gross especially when it's apparently only for poor people.

Yea, my friend lives in Montreal and he was saying even if a store is open if what you want to get is not "non essential" you cant buy it. Like.. who determines what products are "non essential"

I live in Manitoba and its the same thing. The government has a list of essential items that it publishes. If the item isn't on the list, you can't buy it in store, only via curb side (even if you can walk into the store to buy something essential). Stores rope off or cover in plastic items that you can't buy in-store.
I honestly don't know if you people are being satirical or not.
Grocery stores and pharmacies stay open because they are essential. Other stores, like clothing, toys, etc., are closed because they are not essential. Allowing large box stores (aka WalMart) to sell non-essential goods on the pretext that they also sell groceries and medicine would be immensely unfair to smaller and local stores that sell only non-essential goods and are forced to close. Same rules need to apply to everyone. This is one case where the government got it completely right.
Government limiting freedom of movement is sad, but it is a temporary necessity given the circumstances. The incoherence between the strict curfew and the lax recommendations on international travels is annoying, but (1) that's the result of two different jurisdictions, federal and provincial, not one government bringing down the hammer on one group of people while being lax on another, and (2) the solution is more restrictions on international travel, not removing the curfew.
I generally think that if people would stop doing stupid shit and getting each other infected, we wouldn't need tighter restrictions. Everything people are complaining about is a direct result of people just not doing what they were supposed to be doing when the rules were more lax. The government gave us extra room, we abused it, now we get less room.
So after the fuckery that happened in the States on Wednesday, the Conservatives decided to start some shit. 'Start' is being generous though, as it was just pointed out to me and I'm not sure how long it existed. In a complete lack of shock, the site has been taken down and replaced with a 404 error page that I'm sure someone had a good wank sesh over how fucking clever he was. I took a screenshot of it though
And there's that little issue of the internet not forgetting things either...

Seriously, I saw this earlier and it should be getting more attention.
“Watching the Capitol Security stand by and even take selfies with the oncoming rioters made me feel pretty good that something like that couldn’t happen in my own country,” said Smitty Terder, standing outside Sports Physio Waterloo and ignoring the RCMP’s inaction in the recent Mi’kmaq lobster dispute.
Beaverton probably didn't need to see the future to figure this one out, but we sure are learning about a bunch of Canadians who were present at the insurrection in Washington.

WIP would be the Western Independence Party, wouldn't it.

I'm honestly astonished it took them as long as it did. Given the CPC's loyalty to the GOP I expected them to fully commit to "the only legitimate elections are ones which we win" back in November.
(That said they'll absolutely play that card nonstop in the next general election.)
non essential business have to close at 8pm unless (most do that already? or close to it)
As part of the new rules, all non-essential retail stores, including hardware stores, alcohol retailers, and those offering curbside pickup or delivery must open no earlier than 7 a.m. and close no later than 8 p.m.
The restricted hours of operation do not apply to stores that primarily sell food, pharmacies, gas stations, convenience stores, and restaurants for takeout or delivery.
also dont go out after 8pm - unless you really have to then its ok
Yeah honestly I'm trying to determine how Ontario's new "rules" are going to change anything at all. And what do they even mean. "Stay at home order!!!" Except you can still go out and do all the things you were already doing??
Ford is such a weak dithering leader

The only thing that seemed different was that the stay-at-home order mandated non-essential workers to stay/work at home?
At least, that's what the directive sounds like. But I'm guessing there are truck-sized exceptions.
Love when Ford was a slagging southern Asian countries for their lock down measures as authoritarian
Yeah maybe but it's nice to see the state care about people in the slightest sense and not be like well the economy and the more poor who die the less tax burden we have am i rite the market rules all we have going in the west
I wonder how long it is until we have politicians running on a heavy "eat the rich" platform after all of this. Then again, my hopes might be too high that people would realize the wealthy are willing to kill them to stay wealthy, and there is no real way to get wealthy anymore.

The wealthy own 99% of the media companies. They will always invest whatever it cost on a PR campaign vilifying "socialism" .... Hell, I hear farmers going on about the evils of socialism all the time and they are the biggest pigs at that particular trough.
It would be amazing if the federal government went ahead with declaring the Proud Boys a terrorist organization, they made Doug Ford Proud Boy of the month. He'd have to wear that forever.

Doug Ford would like to inform you that the new lock down restrictions are not confusing at all:
"There's no confusion. It's very simple: Stay. Home. Stay home. If you're questioning, 'Should I go out,' you got the answer: Stay home."
The Ontario government is ordering everyone in the province to stay at home except for essential reasons, while also allowing non-essential businesses to keep operating.
For example, I work at fast food. Specifically, the midnight shift. So, naturally...I have been told nothing has changed, and to come in for my usual hours.
Not to brag, but in Québec only pharmacies and gas stations are considered essential businesses. Even grocery stores have to close by 730pm to allow employees to be home before 8pm.

Yeah, they are doing it right. My brother in law works nights at a food distribution place and has a letter from his employer stating that he's essential. He got stopped a few days ago by the cops doing checks by the Champlain bridge.
Ceasing residental/housing projects and potentially leaving people homeless is a real concern. There are also concerns with ceasing construction projects where the building is unclad and left exposed to the elements for weeks at a time.

I don't think there's a lot of construction going on between 8pm and 5am normally, so I don't see how the curfew affects them.

The liberals and greens should just fold and sign on with the NDP.

Always two, there must be. A dumb mainstream Alberta Conservative party and a batshit Alberta Conservative party.
And in time, either the apprentice will take the master’s mantle, or the master will strike down their apprentice.
But turns out that walking your husband on a leash is not. Who knew?
All protest is essentially performance art, yeah?
