    burning rune demon is bad

    he's a limited bomb I guess

but incredibly shitty FoF on a 6 mana stick is not good

Super curious as to why they thought a foretell watermark was necessary.

EDIT: For end-of-game expediency, maybe? Just flip up all your remaining facedowns to show they have marks?

Thinking about this some more, I wonder if Arena will reveal face-downs? There's no reason for it especially in Bo1, but there could be strategic implications in Bo3.

yeah, I get that it's a play on Rune-Scarred Demon, but almost all the "have your opponent choose" cards are bad, even the ones that look good, and he just looks boring. Yeah, you can maybe get cards that work from your graveyard. Yawn.

My opinion on this card is that it must facilitate a combo in some way or something.

Actually in a reanimator deck it might be fun.

A 6 mana dude sounds like a bad enabler for a reanimator deck

It's just a less busted rune scarred demon designed as such intentionally, all there is to it really

Certainly they want you to imagine a return of the Gifts Ungiven/Unburial Rites combo deck — heck, we even got a Praetor running around. But even if such a deck were to come about and include the Rune Demon, its efficacy and success will likely not be because of the Rune Demon.

can you foretell a card down without the keyword and just leave it there, unflippable, taunting your opponent?

Probably not. The digital clients won't let you, and in paper there's almost certainly a rule similar to the one with Morph, where at the end of the game you have to flip all your unflipped facedown cards to show they have the ability that let you put them facedown, and if they don't then you get a game loss or something.

Foretell is an ability specifically on the cards. It's not some kind of new Universal Action available to players.

I think it's also important to note that it's Any Tribe, not just giants. Did you just shit out a bunch of tokens? Drop that and now each of those tokens is one damage to the face boom. This is a very versatile tool for any red creature-based aggro that is able to play a tribal component.

Yeah I guess it could work in a fairy looting deck, which would have the bonus of pitching the upkeep damage giant into the GY

One thing I noted in Zendikar is that the way the class tribes overlapped and the way that Party brought them all together made Zendikar arguably the best tribal limited format ever. You could draft linear all-in tribal, but you could also draft hybrid tribal with Party or go full Party. The powerful decks weren't just a Lord and 16 creatures from the same tribe.

It kinda seems like they're trying to reproduce that for Kaldheim. Aside from Changeling, which is a universal tribal-fixer, a lot of the tribal abilities are formatted like Basalt Ravager where you could splash that card into a Dwarf deck and it'd be nearly as viable as in a Giant deck. Most of the tribal creatures also have a class, which gives you a secondary tribe for "creature type in common" effects. Even a lot of the cards that specify a tribe specify more than one.

Makes me wonder, if we ever go back to Lorwyn or Ixalan, how will they apply the techniques from these more sophisticated tribal sets to the tribes from those older, simpler settings.

I definitely feel like making cards care about two tribes instead of just one is such a small thing that makes a big difference. For example, if every blue card in Ixalan with a tribal effect applied to both pirates and merfolk instead just one or the other, it would have greatly increased the amount of potential deck building variety.

With changelings, a splashable mana cost, and working on any tribe, I'm comfortable saying that's good in limited, not just decent. Requires a bit of focus to make it work, but a 4/2 and lightning bolt for 3R is a card I would throw in just about anything that could cast it in limited.

Only real drawback is it does little work if you're already behind, but an efficient frontside can still at least trade, so it's never a dead card. And god forbid you give it anything like first strike.

Bear in mind that Changelings are mostly (exclusively?) in UG. Being in green means good fixing but still requires a bit more work than it was in Lorwyn.

Isn't that pretty normal for those colors? White and Blue have always gotten high toughness creatures, and they started giving them to Black a while back to help differentiate Black from Red mechanically.
