Good game design caters to people of all skill levels!

I do think this depends on who you've made it for. If you're targeting everyone then yes, your game might be well served having a Nintendoesque invincibility mode. But if you're making Dark Souls, I'm not gonna tell the developer they can't make the kind of game they want to make just because it has to be playable by 7 year olds. The beauty of such a big gaming market is that people can skip games that are designed to be more hardcore than they'd like and go for more mass market ones.

I dont really want to get into this argument too deep: But it's not age as a factor i'm thinking of.

It's accessibility, esp with regards to disability or similar. Way more could be done in this area, but stuff like winged yoshi mode, with zero penalties for activating it, is a good fucking step.

Modern Starfox game: planets with cities and areas that act as "all flight mode" battle arenas. Flying from one area to another is done by means of on-rails segments, space combat is done when flying from planet to planet.

Edit: basically just do Starfox 2 but modern. That game was way ahead of it's time.

Dark Souls gets touted as this hardest of hard games, but honestly you can grind to level up as much as you want and everything is cheeseable. If anything I just don’t think it communicates that openly.

Like, there’s nothing stopping you going heavy armour, giant sword, plus buy 1000 poison arrows and summon a buddy to help you. Oh, you can also get okay fire magic without needing to specialise.

Most people that struggle with it are trying to take the game on as a particular character with limited resources. Use everything and it’s pretty okay.

The main foes in FromSoft games are ledges and the camera, which honestly could do with some work.

People are gonna hate me for this, but I’d actually love a game equivalent to Dark Souls with a couch co-op mode, maybe even with them being separate from the action but useful, much like the Mario Galaxy idea, but splash out on a character model for it.

That was really what made the first Pokémon Snap for me, competing with friends on who could get the highest score on various Pokemon, mostly Mew.

Yeah Dark souls difficulty relies a lot of poor communication and the game equivalent of jump scares.

Also establishing rules for the player and then breaking them for npcs.

    I dig that idea!

If by jump scares you mean needing to jump off ledges with those god awful controls, then I agree.

    Partly that!

But there's a LOT of stuff that is challenging the first timearound because you have little to no way to know it's coming, and drops in diffuclty once you're armed with foreknowledge. It's a very distinctive thing of the dark souls series, and one of my greatest complaints with it. (Compare and contrast other games near that space where foreknowledge of movests helps, but dosent negate the challange). "Gotcha gameplay" might be the terminology i want.

The skeleton boulder in the catacombs would be a classic example, or any of the "Enemy hidden in away you cant see them coming till they jump out and shove you off a ledge". That sort of old-school Tomb of annihilation feel to things.

    ANYWAY

New Pokemon Snap! What a terrible name! But i am so excited. I have been jonesing for a pokemon snap sequel for ages, and i was so annoyed they never did it on the Wii U, which woulda been such a good platform for it can you even imagine that. But now? Yesssss. I am so excited. Give me a peaceful rail shooter that's about all the pretty pictures.

Dark Souls mostly just punishes incautiousness. If you're careful you can get through most of the game quite well. If you try to rush through places you will get your shit stomped. I've seen people who weren't any kind of great gamer (including one streamer who had trouble fighting keese in legend of zelda) beat the first Dark Souls by just being careful and paying attention.

Now, Dark Souls 3, that was when From started to drink the whole "Dark Souls games are hard!" koolaid.

    Steam ID: Right here.

The peak of "jumpscare difficulty" would be the Capra Demon boss fight in DS1.

Pokémon Snap feels like a glimpse into what Pokémon could (or perhaps should) be. All those Pokémon just going about their actual business instead of showing up like random encounter or just wandering aimlessly. It's just neat.

In case you're wondering how Switch did in the second month of new machines from Sony and Microsoft:

Also it looks like Pikmin 3 and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity were relatively soft sellers, but it apparently didn't matter in the least.

There's individual IPs that arguably outperform any single game Nintendo has (here I'm thinking of Call of Duty) but as an overall portfolio from a company, holy shit yes.

If we're just talking about individual mainline games, Call of Duty definitely comes out on top in terms of sales. Especially since they're able to crank out new games every year. Now, if we throw in the various Pokemon spinoffs, it gets closer -- especially if you throw in Pokemon Go, which remains an absolute revenue monster. I'm guessing Pokemon's merch biz is better too.

Without digging into things and crunching all the various numbers I suspect Pokemon comes out on top overall, but Call of Duty probably isn't too far behind.

Yeah Activision and EA not only have astronomical sale across multiple platforms, they are also raking in tons of MTX, something Nintendo does only lightly with their console games. They have the best IPs of a console maker by far, but that's as far as it goes.

Also said IPs weren't enough to save the Wii U. You need actual compelling features to sell an underpowered system this well.
