I just finished reading Annihilation and then immediately felt the urge to rewatch Annihilation and god those two stories are great
although, i don't know if it's the netflix version, or just a bit of a shitty monitor, or if the film is just Like That, but it is a real shame that both times i've watched it, it's been kinda weirdly compressed and blurry
a lot of the image ended up being washed out and blurry. Which is a real shame because so much of the beauty of the film comes from all the intricate detail and getting lost within it. Especially with all the fractal imagery near the climax, it feels a shame not to have an almost hyperreal sense of the depth to every little crevice. I wish that it had released in theatres here, but oh well
Nah it's an issue of whatever streaming service you're using. I have the Blu-Ray and have also streamed the last 30 minutes of it multiple times when it was on Prime Video and it always looked super crisp to me.
as the Covid heist movie it’s marketed as, it’s terrible
as the chamber drama about two miserable people reckoning with their lives during forced isolation, it fucking rips
it’s also the only Covid project I’ve seen that really captures the ennui and banality of quarantine, I think it’ll be a great document in twenty years

still, it's an incredible film
did you watch Netflix in a browser or with an app? It used to be that the browser version had worse quality. I'm not sure if that s still a thing though.
can anyone help me find the name of a movie for a friend? it sounds like an old horror movie.
she said it has a guy with white hair who can't be in the sun so he wears sunglasses and has a cash with tinted windows and there is some kinda experiment in the water that make people go on killing sprees. she said it's an old movie. like from the 80s?
NausicaÄ of the Valley of the Wind
(風の谷のナウシカ, which I note only because I can parse it)
- getting a Final Fantasy vibe here (which is weird, because FF is not really my thing)
- generally on board with toxic jungles reclaiming the land, but it does cause problems for the survivors
- like the opening titles
- - Zelda botw and Majora's Mask vibes
- not entirely sure if shotguns work like that, but it's a good thought
- I like the flyer. Higher tech than I would have thought
- - I guess the titles weren't completely fanciful; she does have wings, of a sort.
- *bite* Nausicaä has nerves of steel
- she's pretty talented
- there's also a bunch of Dragon Quest in here
(my point re: the games is that this feels like a main source of inspiration for them.)
- "clad in blue"? I think the prophecy got the sex wrong.
- UFO?
- - an airship
- that's a lot of speculation, princess. I mean I'm sure you're right, but still.
- a prisoner
- throwing around a bunch of nations. Pejite and Tolmek.
- The Ohm again
- - though she thinks it's just 'an' Ohm
- more spores
- I'm assuming that's the cargo and it did not burn
- perks of being a princess: skiv off work and people are just like, "OK"
- the Tolmekians want their warrior
- fearless! Jumps into the middle of several soldiers and handily wins
- Yupa catches a sword thrust in his arm and calmly gves a speech.
- Highness Kushana. Neat that the main royalty are women.
- "Guards! Take her away"
- Obaba is pretty great
- - and the VO is Futurama's Mom.
- *Teto scratches at a wall* she did mention a secret room...
- nice garden, but I feel plants aren't a healthy thing to have in this world
- - hah! couple seconds later, Yupa: this chamber is filled with toxic plants!
- the problem is the soil, not the plants. Hmm...
- weird long close-up on Yupa's face there
- the kids would have done better to give her some poison spores with which to escape
- Pejite scout?
- - though I have the impression Pejite had been pacified
- - mostly right the first time: Pejite gunship
- Princess, I don't think they can hear you. It's not
- - uh, what was that
- inviting Kushana to join their escape is a generous, if dangerous, thought
- I'm sure there will be no repercussions for the "breathing poison" stunt
- really, Kushana?
- ... and we'll walk in fields of gold
- off to rescue the pilot
- Mito takes the opportunity to relieve Kushana of the firearm. Presence of mind.
- lost her mask, again. duck, duck ...
- pilot did not get the memo about how to navigate quicksand
- procession of the dead
- - well, probably not because she's a kid here
- Asbel of Pejite
- ... and what gives you the right to give her a warning?
- does the sand purify the poison somehow?
- guess the chiko nuts came in handy after all
- could have fooled me, Mr. "I'm going to shoot down half a dozen airships in a surprise attack"
- "Acid lake" you make it sound so charming
- uhoh, they missed some spores
- maybe you should have taken her armor off, also
- yeah, just throw her under the bus, Asbel.
- there's always another choice
- I feel like they're talking past each other
- well, it was worth a shot
- mm... foreshadowing
- Kushana sees her soldiers being routed by the villagers: "what a bunch of fools"
- Kurotowa: "They hijacked our tank!"
- - he's oddly self-aware and easy-going. "That dream didn't last long" *shrug*
- great timing, Asbel. An escape attempt right into a firefight
- at least he's self-sacrificing
- chasing down a single glider? That seems like a waste
- Asbel survived
- wait, the gunship was a surprise to the Tolmeks earlier. How could the Pejites recognize it?
- Yupa showing off his skills
- - smart boss: "kill him, and you'll be famous"
- "Too much fire gives birth to nothing"
- "just shut up."
- - "yes sir!
- it feels like feeding the soldiers just before a battle is the wrong time.
- "ah yes, food. Plenty of time for a leisurely meal"
- fuel levels critical
- thousands of Ohm
- a baby ohm as a lure. that's a choice
- she really is reckless and inventive.
- weird telescope
- they're ... uh, they're flocking this way
- she's really very lucky with when it comes to bullets being fired at her
- - not lucky enough
- I mean, it might not be acid for the Ohm?
- that must smart
- her efforts are in vain
- Nausicaä, barely able to stand, let alone hold the weapon, issues orders
- Kushana has revived the giant warrior. This will end badly.
- that ... worked well. Not well enough
- - shades of The Spirits Within
- not sure she could survive that
- but at least it worked
- and she gets resurrected
- typical prophets, assuming the savior would be a dude
hot take: top marks, very good movie. I'm sure this will come as a surprise to everyone.

Four. The was an animated, straight to blu-ray movie released last year.
yeah im aware of that, I was counting theatrical films cause I figured that's what we were talking about
