If you're talking about the thing in the bottom right, it's the same as that blue blob on the picture, it's a float to keep the cord off the bottom of the pool near the bot so it doesn't get sucked up. That's why the section of cord is poking out of the water.
I circled what I was talking about, that’s an extension cord connecting to something else, not the blue ball.

Cover it in electrical tape. It's fine.

I'm not convinced. Just to the left of The Mystery Bulge you can see that the wire breaks the surface of the water. If that's a junction between two cords it should be heavier than the cord to either side, not lighter, so would sink.

I'm convinced it's a pool roomba but it's hilarious to think the line of chili pepper LEDs is powered by an extension cord run through the water because they ought a 50' one that can't route around the edge.

Cause we have all seen (and tbf, probably done) stupider. I have a solid but very unprofessional load bearing wall removal in our cabin that is still better engineered or more robust than 75% of this damn house.

If you're gonna run an extension cord through a pool you have to duct tape the joins to pool noodles, or at least foam slippers. That's just basic home electrical safety.

But it’s going to have more air trapped and be bigger around increasing boyance. Also it looks like the cord is tighter on the far side, also there a slight change in color and a tapering on the mystery bulge. And it looks submerged to me. It may be connected to a pool roomba, but it’s connected with an extension cord.

I've only ever seen pool roombas use a pump and suction to do their thing. An electric one is absolutely wild to me.

Why does the sink and toilet look so tiny?

Wait, do you know what it's a pullstring for that it should be a certain length?

I initially thought "old school flusher without the fancy handle" but then I saw the metal push-button on the tank back and now I don't know.

New question: what is that grey rectangle behind the sink?

    Hi homeowner thread.

I'm buying the house that I've lived in for the past 8 years.

It's a bit complicated. My wife's parents built an extension to their home about 15 years ago so that her grandma could live there. It was coded as a "Mother-in-law suite" and thus was not considered a multi-family home, but still a single-family home. Fast forward to about 11 years ago, grandma passed away, my wife lives there, and she "helps with the bills" which looks an awful lot like monthly rent but is definitely not rent.

8 years ago, I come into the picture, we date, I move in, we get married. We keep paying "rent."

Her dad is now moving to Florida with her stepmom, and is selling the house to us. Appraiser has been here, mentioned that the bank may tell us to delete a kitchen (The house is effectively a duplex without the coding of a duplex), we freak out a bit about that, but then find out about the original coding of the extension and everything's fine.

House is appraised at $160,000. He's selling it to us for $130,000. Loan officer is getting us a fixed rate of 3.25%, and is having us do a 30 day loan initially, and then turning right back around 9 days later, and "refinancing" it into a 30 year loan, so that we don't have to pay as much PMI over the next 8 years. Saves us about $30/mo for the next 8 years. Still keeping the same interest rate. There has been some mention that with the house being valued at $160,000 that this would grant us access to a lot of equity early on, which I think means we start out with $30,000 of equity? I dunno?

Once they move out, my brother is going to move into the other side, and "help us with the bills" while he attends more school, just getting his AS in accounting.

We're pretty excited. I'm trying to tamp down a bit on trying to upgrade the decor and looks of the house right away this year and focus on the more functional shit like, do our gutters need fixing, does our basement leak anywhere, etc. My wife is super excited about our lawn care right now, she's watching youtube videos about fertilizing it and everything.

It is a big house, btw. 6 bedrooms, 3 baths, 2 kitchens and huge living room and den areas. We have never had any intention of having kids so of course several of these rooms will be for playing long board games and closing the door to "pause" them and keep them free of cat interference (we have 4 cats).

It looks like the jungle bathroom is a basement bathroom, and the reason the pipes are exposed is the walls are exterior, and as such you don't want your toilet lines and sewer freezing. It looks like that is an upflow toilet maybe?

I was using the weird wide angle lens setting on iPhone because the bathroom is too small to decently fit in a normal photo... and yeah those are external walls hence the pipes. When the house was built this room was like a weird coal room or something, it kinda juts out of the main house.

The rope turns on the light.

    And yeah, I jungled it.

One thing to look into down the road would be making the live in suite "official". If you can get it it's own entrance and such, maybe do some better sound insulation, you could rent it out after your brother moves out. The rental income then helps with the mortgage costs. It has some pitfalls like getting a bad tenant but if you can get a good tenant or decide you guys want to live in the smaller section and rent the main house to a family, you could pay for the monthly costs with the rent alone.

It does have its own entrance already, and there's even a "community" entrance as well. It wouldn't take much to turn it into a multi-family residence, we're just resistant to that for now because we're not sure we want to take on a tenant. EDIT: Oh, also, the neighborhood zoning forbids it, forgot about that. FiL told me that when it got brought up last time.

Currently we live in the extension, and we're debating whether we want to move into the main house or not, we're pretty cozy where we're at, and the main house is a bit of a disaster. Needs new flooring, for starters. Supposedly my FiL is going to re-floor it before he moves out but I'm....not counting on it. The laundry list of shit he needs to do between now and July has stacked up considerably and his wife keeps adding more things to that list while he churns on the first item so I'm thinking I'm gonna have to do a lot of this myself. Hooray!

Good christ. I spent, cumulatively, 12 hours removing that tree stump. It would've been less, but who knows how many the fuck years ago there was a steel mesh and fence where it was growing, so the tree just absorbed that. Meaning none of my cutting tools were safe to use - I had to switch between Arbortech Allsaw - which is the best tool - except it can't cut steel.

So I basically dissected the damn thing piece by piece with that and my sawzall to get it free safely, which included cutting the damn steel tubes which by the end were all that was holding it in the ground.

I'm not even sure how deep those tubes go! They're 2.5 feet down or so, and probably go down another 2 minimum, and were already like 4-5 above ground. Why was this here? Why was any of this here!?

We replaced our front door about 4 years ago. Everything went well and we really love it! Fast fwd to this year and my wife has been wanting a storm door.

It turns out they made the front door 35" wide to keep the sidelights even. And storm doors are either 32" or 36". So yesterday I paid $900 to purchase and install a custom storm door. :rotate:

I got a call from my mom (who is staying with me due to COVID) saying there were flying insects swarming in the kitchen. I get home and it's fucking termites. There were crawling out of the cracks by the window frame. Hundreds of the fuckers. While pancing, I collected samples in clear tape, opened the window, took the screen out and vacuumed up the rest.

I live in a townhome so I called the HOA to get a termite specialist out here ASAP. I know I'm not responsible for anything beyond my interior drywall but man, I"m still freaked the fuck out. This is not how I wanted to spend my monday.

Speaking of grease traps... since I'm buying a place on a septic system I've been looking into such queries as, "How do I clean paint brushes/rollers?" and "How do I clean pans?"
The former answer seems to be "Do it in the yard (not near the septic field) and hope for the best". For the latter the answer seems to be "let it cool and then scrape it out", which sounds like a pain in the ass and not likely to be super effective anyway. So now I'm looking into residential grease traps. I'm unclear on whether these things go under the sink, or out in the yard? And how often they need to be emptied?

Anybody have info about putting a grease trap on your sink? Or just better advice for cleaning your pans?

Sadly with all the places I've lived not having any kind of dedicated Grease collection systems, I've pretty much relied on one of the following methods:

-Let the grease cool in whatever implement you're using, then scrape the hardened grease into the trash and then wash the implement

-make a foil cup that fits into your sink drain opening and pour your grease into that, then when it hardens, wrap the hardened grease in the foil and toss in the garbage. Or simply get a dedicated container to pour grease in and periodically scrape it out into the garbage as it gets full.

If you ignore it long enough the wind will knock your grill over and take care of it! Then after dealing with that you can buy those little foil trays that sit in there.

For grease in pan. If you use canned goods at all save a few clean empty cans and pour extra grease into those cans. Fill them up and throw away. The remaining grease can be wiped out with a paper towel and then the pan cleaned like normal.

As noted you could also get a dedicated container for this as well. Either works. If you let it cool a bit, but while its still in liquid form you can use plastic containers that would be throw away anyways, like yogurt and such.

Make sure whatever company the HOA uses gives a 5 year guarantee on the work, and that They reframe that portion of the townhouse interior. You’ll need to patch and paint because the termite folks are going to drill a shitload of holes in your drywall.
