The purpose of one group of humans was to find a power source which ultimately was "downloaded" by someone half a world away. What? The power source turned out to be just one of Godzilla's dorsal fins, I feel like they could have repurposed this for something else. Like, instead of a power source they need to find a material that could shield humanity from GZs breath, but which they secretly plan on plating MechaGodzilla with.
I find this puzzling as well. They could have just as easily found a large amount of the power source to carry to MechaGodzilla via the convenient hole Godzilla bored through the Earth. It wouldn't have taken that much more time.

His father died saving GZs life and now the son has given birth the the machine that will instead end it. Focus more on that poetic injustice and what internal conflict he has over this. He gets more characterisation (or any at all would be an improvement) and at the end he becomes a hero by using his knowledge of MechaGodzilla to help stop it. That would be better I think.
I suspect Millie Bobby Brown originally had more to do in the film. We see a newspaper clipping about her mother early in the movie, and we know that Lance Reddick's scenes were cut because they also featured Kyle Chandler, whose character proved unpopular in KotM. If the series continues and Brown remains in it I assume Chandler will fall by the wayside.
100% agreement on Ren, though. Surely there must have been more there. That's probably the aspect of the film I'm most curious about. I hope he didn't die in this movie and that he comes back for a sequel (perhaps with Ghidorah's consciousness affecting his mind).

Zhang Ziyi, who played the twins that serve as the MonsterVerse's equivalent of the Shobijin, had some kind of scheduling conflict and had to be replaced by Rebecca Hall. Mothra probably would have appeared or been referenced in some capacity if Zhang Ziyi had been available. I'm also very curious how and why someone associated with Mothra got put in charge of Kong, and I'm hoping that perhaps the movie's novelization will be based on a version of the script where Zhang Ziyi's character hasn't been replaced.
Godzilla's fin wasn't the power source, it just could absorb power. The power source was magic hollow earth radiation, which they had to go to the Hollow Earth to find.

Yeah definitely, it strikes me as a film that was chopped and changed in editing and suffered a lot from external factors

I was just a kid when I saw the Matthew Broderick Godzilla but I remember really enjoying it, I thought Godzilla looked cool as a lean mean dragon-faced machine
and they had babies!
edit: there was also that spin-off cartoon series, and the old 70s-80s cartoon
I hope the next Godzilla movie has Godzooky in it.

I remember hating the Broderick Godzilla because Zilla never used atomic breath and was taken out by a couple of jet fighters.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
Just rewatched 2014 after seeing GvK the other night.
I think 2014 was made specifically for me. I really love it. The build up to the first full reveal of Godzilla is so perfect. The score is incredible. This one really captures the magnitude of these beasts in a way that the others do not. It's pretty similar to Pacific Rim in that regard. The Jaegers in Pacific Rim are slow, lumbering, and they just look heavy. The hits look like they'd shake mountains. Then the sequel loses all of that. The Godzilla sequels aren't as visceral either.
Now that they're all fresh in my mind, I would have to rate the Monsterverse films in this order:
Godzilla 2014 - my favorite in terms of tone, really enjoy it despite it's flaws
Kong: Skull Island - probably the most objectively good film, it's simple but is executed well and it just works
Godzilla vs. Kong - Really dumb but still fun
King of the Monsters - Really dumb and really annoying to the point that I just could not enjoy it

I've thought about it for a few days, and I think I've figured out most of the elements for my ideal MonsterVerse finale movie (I realize halfway through I'm pretty much writing the outline for a fanfic, but whatevs, hopefully someone enjoys reading this as much as I did brainstorming it):
Madison Russell is abducted by a cult led by Alan Jonah dedicated to Godzilla and his Titans. It is revealed that the Titans have been less peaceful than what has been reported, and that they have in fact been not only restoring the environment but attacking human operations that caused the ecological problems in the first place. The cultists regard Madison's mother as a savior who released Ghidorah not only to free the Titans from Monarch's grasp, but to prove that Godzilla was the Earth's rightful ruler by destroying Ghidorah and taking control of the Titans. They also seek to learn more and emulate the ancient human civilization that submitted to and worshiped the Titans. Jonah himself doesn't really believe most of what he's been preaching to the cultists, but he regards them as useful pawns with similar end goals. Jonah reveals to Madison that the cult has kidnapped a number of her friends and threatens to kill them if she doesn't use her connection to Monarch to steal information from them regarding Monarch's activities, the Titans, and the Hollow Earth.
Though Madison initially goes along with Jonah's plans, fearing for her friends, she also wants to find some way out of the situation. Unknown to her, various lower-ranking members of Monarch are secretly part of Jonah's cult (though none with access in Monarch as high as Mark Russell). They've been monitoring Madison in the Monarch facility. Madison's father finds out she's in the facility and goes to confront her about what she's doing just as she's obtained the information Jonah wanted only for one of the secret cultists to shoot and kill Mark.
Madison, distraught by the death of her father and wanting to betray Jonah but still concerned for her friends, is confronted by Dr. Ilene Chen, who has somehow learned exactly what's happening. She promises to help Madison somehow while also revealing that Monarch's higher ups have some secret, nefarious goal, and that they need the data from Monarch that Madison has obtained. Dr. Chen tells Madison that her family has been working as double agents within Monarch for generations at the behest of someone else, and that her sister Ling is at Monarch's Hollow Earth facility to investigate (the twin sisters, through their connection to Mothra, communicate what they learn to one another and to Mothra telepathically). Together, Madison and Ilene escape the Monarch facility even as loyal Monarch operatives and undercover cultists fight.
Unbeknownst to Monarch's secret masters, the original King Ghidorah's consciousness is hidden within Ren Serizawa's mind, having transferred part of itself to him when MechaGodzilla went rogue. In hiding since the defeat of MechaGodzilla, Ren reappears to infiltrate the Monarch facility in the Hollow Earth via psychic powers and discovers their secret project: a new, bioengineered Grand King Ghidorah, as well as a dozen mutant Death Ghidorahs, all in stasis (so as not to alert Godzilla of their presence).
Madison and Ilene arrive at the meeting point with Jonah and his cultists. Ilene reveals to everyone that she and her sister are the human agents of Mothra before demonstrating her supernatural connection to the Queen of the Monsters. The cultists turn against Jonah, release the captives, and quickly cooperate with Ilene, eager to make her and her sister the new leaders of the cult.
The data Madison obtained reveals that the masterminds behind Monarch are the last survivors of an alien race that allied with King Ghidorah to destroy the ancient civilization that worshiped the Titans. They drove the Titans into slumber by exhausting the Hollow Earth's energy, but Godzilla managed to persist long enough to decimate their invasion force, leaving the few survivors with no choice but to go into suspended animation until the time was right for them to make their move. They are ultimately the source of the rapidly advancing tech in the MonsterVerse. Originally, they planned to use the MUTOs to kill Godzilla, having modified the MUTOs to have energy fields that weakened Godzilla's breath weapon. When this failed, King Ghidorah used its psychic abilities to plumb Emma Russell's mind and manipulate her into freeing it, making her into an unknowing pawn driven to madness. Ghidorah was supposed to take control of the Titans and destroy human civilization, but Godzilla and Mothra defeated it. With even Ghidorah defeated, Monarch begins the MechaGodzilla project as a weapon designed specifically to defeat Godzilla and give Ghidorah a new body, secretly handing the project and other advanced technology over to APEX to get rid of any link between MechaGodzilla and Monarch. Even with MechaGodzilla defeated, Monarch still establishes a plausible reason to establish an outpost within the Hollow Earth. This leads to Monarch's final, riskiest plan: siphon the power of the Hollow Earth to create not only a new, more powerful Grand King Ghidorah that is completely under their command, but to create a small army of artificial Titans for it to control in opposition to the Titans under Godzilla's control: the Death Ghidorahs. Whereas the Titans presence is beneficial to the ecosystem, the Death Ghidorahs have the opposite affect, killing anything less than a Titan that falls within their deathly aura.
Displeased that Monarch would replace it with obedient servants, the original Ghidorah through Ren Serizawa manages to transfer part of its consciousness to the enhanced Grand King Ghidorah body and rebel against its would-be masters before dispatching the Death Ghidorahs to eliminate all of Earth's Titans, using the pathways in the Hollow Earth to appear all around the globe. With the Death Ghidorahs occupying the Titans in battles across the planet, Grand King Ghidorah remains in the Hollow Earth to siphon all its energy and make itself even more powerful but is opposed by Kong.
Godzilla and Mothra (in a more powerful form) make their way to the Hollow Earth to confront Grand King Ghidorah, knowing it is the greater threat and that stopping the monster will throw the Death Ghidorahs into disarray. Multiple Death Ghidorahs intercept them to try and stop their progress, but fortunately other Titans (Behemoth and Rodan, at least) appears to aid them in battle.
Monarch is caught in a civil war between secret Titan cultists and rank-and-file Monarch members who are now taking orders from leaders at the mercy of Ghidorah/Ren Serizawa. Despite this, Madison and Ilene are able to make their way into a facility with a link to the Hollow Earth and convene with Ilene's sister Ling, who herself has been cooperating with Dr. Lind and Dr. Andrews, as well as Jia, to aid Kong against Grand King Ghidorah.
The final battle unfolds, with Godzilla, Kong, and Mothra doing battle against Grand King Ghidorah in a fight that takes full advantage of the bizarre nature of the Hollow Earth (maybe as an homage to the late Yoshimitsu Banno Godzilla can momentarily take advantage of the gravitational anomaly in the middle region to "fly", propelling himself with his ray to smash into Grand King Ghidorah spines-first and knock it to the ground).
With Grand King Ghidorah too powerful for even Godzilla, Kong, and Mothra to defeat, their human allies use a H.E.A.V. to make their way to an ancient temple dedicated to the Titans. There, the Chens reveal that, just as they have a link to Mothra, Madison and Jia have links to Godzilla and Kong. Ghidorah/Ren Serizawa appears from hiding, having anticipated that allies of the Earth Titans might arrive. He attempts to kill the Chens using psychic powers gained from Ghidorah's influence, but is instead himself killed along with the original Ghidorah's mind. Following this, the Chens lead Madison and Jia in a ritual that supernaturally empowers their respective Titans to draw more of the power of the Hollow Earth into themselves.
Thanks to their human allies, Godzilla, Mothra, and Kong temporarily become Super Godzilla, Eternal Mothra, and King Kong. Together they slay Grand King Ghidorah before separating via the tunnels linking the Hollow Earth to the surface and help the other Titans quickly destroy the remaining Death Ghidorahs.
Even with the Death Ghidorahs defeated, a large amount of ecological devastation has been wrought worldwide, and several of the Titans have been slain. Though some still live and make efforts to fix the damage, Grand King Ghidorah exhausted much of the power in the Hollow Earth that sustained them. Before long they all will fall back into slumber until sometime in the distant future, when the energy they depend on has been replenished. Soon the Titans will be gone, and mankind will have to learn how to maintain the natural balance without the Titans to save them.
BTW just wanna clarify that Super Godzilla, Eternal Mothra, Grand King Ghidorah, and Death Ghidorah (or Desghidorah) are all preexisting concepts and not things I made up.
If even one of those things ends up happening in a sequel I'll be proud myself for predicting it/thrilled someone working on the movie is a big enough Gozilla nerd to come up with the same idea(s) independently.

Yeah I think 2014 is still my favorite too.
I know a lot of people hate how slow it is. But the somber atmosphere, the slow buildup to something you know is coming, then the big payoff in the end. It was wonderful.
And as you said the music is great too.
That said I think it would also be the one I'm the least lately to rewatch.
Godzilla 2014 was more akin to Shin Godzilla or Godzilla 1954; where as KotM and GvK are more akin to Showa, Heisei, Millennium movies. I like them all really. Personally I like when things are different, when a series changes things up. I wouldn't be opposed to another Monsterverse movie or series that goes back to that 2014 vibe. I think an HBO 8-10 episode series could work really well for something like that.

Yeah, especially given the Robert Oppenheimer quote in the teaser for the movie ("I am become death, destroyer of worlds") I expected a much different movie than Godzilla 2014 turned out to be. I was down for a serious American Godzilla movie, but considering how G14 ended up I'm glad the series has gone in a wildly different direction.

Also if your going for the tone of something like Shin Godzilla, you need likeable characters since it's from their point of view. Which is why them killing off Bryan Cranston was probably the worst mistake that movie made.

BTW just wanna clarify that Super Godzilla, Eternal Mothra, Grand King Ghidorah, and Death Ghidorah (or Desghidorah) are all preexisting concepts and not things I made up.
If even one of those things ends up happening in a sequel I'll be proud myself for predicting it/thrilled someone working on the movie is a big enough Gozilla nerd to come up with the same idea(s) independently.

I've thought about it for a few days, and I think I've figured out most of the elements for my ideal MonsterVerse finale movie (I realize halfway through I'm pretty much writing the outline for a fanfic, but whatevs, hopefully someone enjoys reading this as much as I did brainstorming it):
Madison Russell is abducted by a cult led by Alan Jonah dedicated to Godzilla and his Titans. It is revealed that the Titans have been less peaceful than what has been reported, and that they have in fact been not only restoring the environment but attacking human operations that caused the ecological problems in the first place. The cultists regard Madison's mother as a savior who released Ghidorah not only to free the Titans from Monarch's grasp, but to prove that Godzilla was the Earth's rightful ruler by destroying Ghidorah and taking control of the Titans. They also seek to learn more and emulate the ancient human civilization that submitted to and worshiped the Titans. Jonah himself doesn't really believe most of what he's been preaching to the cultists, but he regards them as useful pawns with similar end goals. Jonah reveals to Madison that the cult has kidnapped a number of her friends and threatens to kill them if she doesn't use her connection to Monarch to steal information from them regarding Monarch's activities, the Titans, and the Hollow Earth.
Though Madison initially goes along with Jonah's plans, fearing for her friends, she also wants to find some way out of the situation. Unknown to her, various lower-ranking members of Monarch are secretly part of Jonah's cult (though none with access in Monarch as high as Mark Russell). They've been monitoring Madison in the Monarch facility. Madison's father finds out she's in the facility and goes to confront her about what she's doing just as she's obtained the information Jonah wanted only for one of the secret cultists to shoot and kill Mark.
Madison, distraught by the death of her father and wanting to betray Jonah but still concerned for her friends, is confronted by Dr. Ilene Chen, who has somehow learned exactly what's happening. She promises to help Madison somehow while also revealing that Monarch's higher ups have some secret, nefarious goal, and that they need the data from Monarch that Madison has obtained. Dr. Chen tells Madison that her family has been working as double agents within Monarch for generations at the behest of someone else, and that her sister Ling is at Monarch's Hollow Earth facility to investigate (the twin sisters, through their connection to Mothra, communicate what they learn to one another and to Mothra telepathically). Together, Madison and Ilene escape the Monarch facility even as loyal Monarch operatives and undercover cultists fight.
Unbeknownst to Monarch's secret masters, the original King Ghidorah's consciousness is hidden within Ren Serizawa's mind, having transferred part of itself to him when MechaGodzilla went rogue. In hiding since the defeat of MechaGodzilla, Ren reappears to infiltrate the Monarch facility in the Hollow Earth via psychic powers and discovers their secret project: a new, bioengineered Grand King Ghidorah, as well as a dozen mutant Death Ghidorahs, all in stasis (so as not to alert Godzilla of their presence).
Madison and Ilene arrive at the meeting point with Jonah and his cultists. Ilene reveals to everyone that she and her sister are the human agents of Mothra before demonstrating her supernatural connection to the Queen of the Monsters. The cultists turn against Jonah, release the captives, and quickly cooperate with Ilene, eager to make her and her sister the new leaders of the cult.
The data Madison obtained reveals that the masterminds behind Monarch are the last survivors of an alien race that allied with King Ghidorah to destroy the ancient civilization that worshiped the Titans. They drove the Titans into slumber by exhausting the Hollow Earth's energy, but Godzilla managed to persist long enough to decimate their invasion force, leaving the few survivors with no choice but to go into suspended animation until the time was right for them to make their move. They are ultimately the source of the rapidly advancing tech in the MonsterVerse. Originally, they planned to use the MUTOs to kill Godzilla, having modified the MUTOs to have energy fields that weakened Godzilla's breath weapon. When this failed, King Ghidorah used its psychic abilities to plumb Emma Russell's mind and manipulate her into freeing it, making her into an unknowing pawn driven to madness. Ghidorah was supposed to take control of the Titans and destroy human civilization, but Godzilla and Mothra defeated it. With even Ghidorah defeated, Monarch begins the MechaGodzilla project as a weapon designed specifically to defeat Godzilla and give Ghidorah a new body, secretly handing the project and other advanced technology over to APEX to get rid of any link between MechaGodzilla and Monarch. Even with MechaGodzilla defeated, Monarch still establishes a plausible reason to establish an outpost within the Hollow Earth. This leads to Monarch's final, riskiest plan: siphon the power of the Hollow Earth to create not only a new, more powerful Grand King Ghidorah that is completely under their command, but to create a small army of artificial Titans for it to control in opposition to the Titans under Godzilla's control: the Death Ghidorahs. Whereas the Titans presence is beneficial to the ecosystem, the Death Ghidorahs have the opposite affect, killing anything less than a Titan that falls within their deathly aura.
Displeased that Monarch would replace it with obedient servants, the original Ghidorah through Ren Serizawa manages to transfer part of its consciousness to the enhanced Grand King Ghidorah body and rebel against its would-be masters before dispatching the Death Ghidorahs to eliminate all of Earth's Titans, using the pathways in the Hollow Earth to appear all around the globe. With the Death Ghidorahs occupying the Titans in battles across the planet, Grand King Ghidorah remains in the Hollow Earth to siphon all its energy and make itself even more powerful but is opposed by Kong.
Godzilla and Mothra (in a more powerful form) make their way to the Hollow Earth to confront Grand King Ghidorah, knowing it is the greater threat and that stopping the monster will throw the Death Ghidorahs into disarray. Multiple Death Ghidorahs intercept them to try and stop their progress, but fortunately other Titans (Behemoth and Rodan, at least) appears to aid them in battle.
Monarch is caught in a civil war between secret Titan cultists and rank-and-file Monarch members who are now taking orders from leaders at the mercy of Ghidorah/Ren Serizawa. Despite this, Madison and Ilene are able to make their way into a facility with a link to the Hollow Earth and convene with Ilene's sister Ling, who herself has been cooperating with Dr. Lind and Dr. Andrews, as well as Jia, to aid Kong against Grand King Ghidorah.
The final battle unfolds, with Godzilla, Kong, and Mothra doing battle against Grand King Ghidorah in a fight that takes full advantage of the bizarre nature of the Hollow Earth (maybe as an homage to the late Yoshimitsu Banno Godzilla can momentarily take advantage of the gravitational anomaly in the middle region to "fly", propelling himself with his ray to smash into Grand King Ghidorah spines-first and knock it to the ground).
With Grand King Ghidorah too powerful for even Godzilla, Kong, and Mothra to defeat, their human allies use a H.E.A.V. to make their way to an ancient temple dedicated to the Titans. There, the Chens reveal that, just as they have a link to Mothra, Madison and Jia have links to Godzilla and Kong. Ghidorah/Ren Serizawa appears from hiding, having anticipated that allies of the Earth Titans might arrive. He attempts to kill the Chens using psychic powers gained from Ghidorah's influence, but is instead himself killed along with the original Ghidorah's mind. Following this, the Chens lead Madison and Jia in a ritual that supernaturally empowers their respective Titans to draw more of the power of the Hollow Earth into themselves.

Some good ideas in there. Seems like way too much for one movie though. If we've learned anything, it's that the KIS (keep it simple) model works best for human plots in these movies. It seems for the monsterverse, likeable characters with straight forward motivations seem to work best.

Both Biollante and Hedorah work really well with the Titan's repair ecosystem mcguffin they setup.
Make it so that a ton of small biolantes keep popping up all over the globe and people can't figure out why and Big Badguy Businessman (BBB) keeps saying "Yeah it sucks that these things keep popping up but you gotta just ignore it and keep working, we can't close down the economy" yadda yadda
Then reveal (GvK spoilers)
He's been using the energy source from the hollow earth to power his factories or to build a spaceship or something, it's a macguffin. But the planet is reacting to him sucking up its energy.
He tries powering up the Macguffin, and that causes Hedorah to spawn and the Biolante masses start to build up. Godzilla has to beat Hedorah, and after winning that fight he has to fight the Enraged Biolante masses until yadda yadda boom they shut down the BBB plant.
End credit stinger: the advisors to the BBB are ape men from the 3rd planet from the black hole (but not the BBB himself, he's human).
Then the next movie you can reveal something like, the ancient Atlanteans that built the temple in King of the Monsters also like, colonized other planets and Ghidorah was just a response to their nonsense to get them to stop, and now that he's dead they are afraid of humans doing the same thing to them again so they build Gigan.

True. KotM's credits idoes say that Monarch is working on artificial Titans, and both the original Biollante and the Godzilla: Monster Planet Hedorah were GMOs, so they could work as artificial replacements for the Titans.
Feels like you could copy a lot of the original Biollante story straight up. We're seeing climate change start to impact food supply around the equator. There was an article I read years back that talked about how we needed to do small things to fight climate change now or some country is going to get screwed so badly by it that they'll try something dangerous like atmospheric seeding because they don't have any other options.
You could make some case that after KotM's, most of the Titans went back to hollow earth abodes. Leaving humans to deal with ecological issues ourselves again. Set the scientist in Central America, trying to merge Titan DNA with food crops, which goes out of control. If you wanted to introduce psychic powers into the monsterverse, like the original, this would be a good movie to do so slowly. You could keep the daughter plot as well. Maybe she was Maddie's friend whose dad used to work for Monarch but moved back to Central America to work on this, and she passes tragically.
If you wanted to merge movies, you could keep that background, have Godzilla and Biollante fight it out mid movie. The 2nd half would be Hedorah, which could either just be Ghidorah DNA or mutated Titan DNA that mixed with pollution, growing in the first half and then becoming a threat in the 2nd half. Or some other reason, corrupt CEO using Titan DNA irresponsibly, ecoterrorist (maybe bring back Charles Dance), etc. Culminating in Biollante coming back to help Godzilla fight it at the end (sort of a plant de-toxifying thing to help drain pollutants from Godzilla or something).
EDIT: Personally I like the message of natural mixing of pollution and Titan DNA, backstory. Feels a bit more real with people in power ignoring issues until they blow up on them.

Yeah, I'm obviously not a professional writer. I did brainstorm ideas for new entries in franchises I like a lot during my old job when I was bored and have a pretty vast knowledge of the Godzilla franchise, though. Plus I really like the idea of secret agent Shobijin and a human-possessed by Ghidorah.
Some more ideas for Grand King Ghidorah:
Ghidorah's beams, at least in older incarnations, were supposed to be gravity-based (although this really only got any attention to it with Keizer Ghidorah in Final Wars, who uses its beams to fling Godzilla around). A Ghidorah in the Hollow Earth could mess with the already extant gravitational anomalies and possibly pull pieces of the interior of the Hollow Earth down on its enemies.
Ghidorah has a history of having his heads blown off. What if a severed head, rather than dying, reconfigured into a snakelike form? Kong could cut off a head with his axe only for it to wrap around him!
This Ghidorah could also regenerate heads even more quickly, meaning that Godzilla, Mothra, and Kong would need to severe all three heads simultaneously.
I also thought about using Hedorah for this, but I figured the similarly environmentally-destructive Death Ghidorah with its already established anti-life (or at least anti-tree) aura would serve better as an anti-Titan and not be as on the nose as a literal pollution monster (plus both the original Death Ghidorah and Grand King Ghidorah appeared in the Rebirth of Mothra trilogy).

Also I really like the idea of using mini-Biolantes to make it so humans aren't completely superfluous when they are included, and the commentary on the BBB wanting people to go to work in spite of the minibiolante problem is pretty on the nose commentary.

Apparently the novelization came out today. For some reason I thought it wasn't coming out until later in the month.
I've already read a few claims about supposed differences between the book and the movie, though Wikizilla hasn't been updated yet and I haven't gotten a chance to read the book myself.
I will say that one supposed change is pretty interesting, if true:
Godzilla attacked the Monarch facility with the MechaGodzilla eye and attacked the fleet with Kong because he was being manipulated by a modified version of the ORCA device from KotM called the ORCA-Z. Walter Simmons and his daughter did this as part of an effort to make Godzilla look like a threat that needed to be disposed of. Cutting power to the fleet worked because it also cut power to the ORCA-Z device.
EDIT: I also just found this article from February that mentions, among other things,
scenes in the Hollow Earth featuring the ruins of the civilization that worshiped the Titans. Source

100% agreement on Ren, though. Surely there must have been more there. That's probably the aspect of the film I'm most curious about. I hope he didn't die in this movie and that he comes back for a sequel (perhaps with Ghidorah's consciousness affecting his mind).

Yeah definitely, it strikes me as a film that was chopped and changed in editing and suffered a lot from external factors
and they had babies!
edit: there was also that spin-off cartoon series, and the old 70s-80s cartoon
I hope the next Godzilla movie has Godzooky in it.
it was highly enjoyable
I think 2014 was made specifically for me. I really love it. The build up to the first full reveal of Godzilla is so perfect. The score is incredible. This one really captures the magnitude of these beasts in a way that the others do not. It's pretty similar to Pacific Rim in that regard. The Jaegers in Pacific Rim are slow, lumbering, and they just look heavy. The hits look like they'd shake mountains. Then the sequel loses all of that. The Godzilla sequels aren't as visceral either.
Now that they're all fresh in my mind, I would have to rate the Monsterverse films in this order:
Godzilla 2014 - my favorite in terms of tone, really enjoy it despite it's flaws
Kong: Skull Island - probably the most objectively good film, it's simple but is executed well and it just works
Godzilla vs. Kong - Really dumb but still fun
King of the Monsters - Really dumb and really annoying to the point that I just could not enjoy it
I liked KoM, but this will probably be my rankings. I wanna see GvK in theaters, hopefully when they open up.
BTW just wanna clarify that Super Godzilla, Eternal Mothra, Grand King Ghidorah, and Death Ghidorah (or Desghidorah) are all preexisting concepts and not things I made up.
If even one of those things ends up happening in a sequel I'll be proud myself for predicting it/thrilled someone working on the movie is a big enough Gozilla nerd to come up with the same idea(s) independently.
I know a lot of people hate how slow it is. But the somber atmosphere, the slow buildup to something you know is coming, then the big payoff in the end. It was wonderful.
And as you said the music is great too.
That said I think it would also be the one I'm the least lately to rewatch.
It's a monster mash masquerading as a story that's ostensibly about things? But not really? It's a story about terrifying, lovecraftian monstrosities.. and also a story about Godzilla walking off into the sunsetocean as people cheer for him and talk about how he just saved the day.
LIke it wants to have it's cake and eat it too. It's a shame too, because it really nails the "oh shit giant monster" aspect very well.
Yeah, especially given the Robert Oppenheimer quote in the teaser for the movie ("I am become death, destroyer of worlds") I expected a much different movie than Godzilla 2014 turned out to be. I was down for a serious American Godzilla movie, but considering how G14 ended up I'm glad the series has gone in a wildly different direction.
Also if your going for the tone of something like Shin Godzilla, you need likeable characters since it's from their point of view. Which is why them killing off Bryan Cranston was probably the worst mistake that movie made.

Both Biollante and Hedorah work really well with the Titan's repair ecosystem mcguffin they setup.
Some good ideas in there. Seems like way too much for one movie though. If we've learned anything, it's that the KIS (keep it simple) model works best for human plots in these movies. It seems for the monsterverse, likeable characters with straight forward motivations seem to work best.
Act 1: Godzilla comes out from the ocean and accidentally steps on the entire human cast of the previous movies
Act 2-3: Godzilla and Kong play basketball against Mothra and Gamera
Make it so that a ton of small biolantes keep popping up all over the globe and people can't figure out why and Big Badguy Businessman (BBB) keeps saying "Yeah it sucks that these things keep popping up but you gotta just ignore it and keep working, we can't close down the economy" yadda yadda
Then reveal (GvK spoilers)
He tries powering up the Macguffin, and that causes Hedorah to spawn and the Biolante masses start to build up. Godzilla has to beat Hedorah, and after winning that fight he has to fight the Enraged Biolante masses until yadda yadda boom they shut down the BBB plant.
End credit stinger: the advisors to the BBB are ape men from the 3rd planet from the black hole (but not the BBB himself, he's human).
Then the next movie you can reveal something like, the ancient Atlanteans that built the temple in King of the Monsters also like, colonized other planets and Ghidorah was just a response to their nonsense to get them to stop, and now that he's dead they are afraid of humans doing the same thing to them again so they build Gigan.
I refuse to accept Godzilla playing basketball as canon without Charles Barkley and a magic silver dollar.
True. KotM's credits idoes say that Monarch is working on artificial Titans, and both the original Biollante and the Godzilla: Monster Planet Hedorah were GMOs, so they could work as artificial replacements for the Titans.
You could make some case that after KotM's, most of the Titans went back to hollow earth abodes. Leaving humans to deal with ecological issues ourselves again. Set the scientist in Central America, trying to merge Titan DNA with food crops, which goes out of control. If you wanted to introduce psychic powers into the monsterverse, like the original, this would be a good movie to do so slowly. You could keep the daughter plot as well. Maybe she was Maddie's friend whose dad used to work for Monarch but moved back to Central America to work on this, and she passes tragically.
If you wanted to merge movies, you could keep that background, have Godzilla and Biollante fight it out mid movie. The 2nd half would be Hedorah, which could either just be Ghidorah DNA or mutated Titan DNA that mixed with pollution, growing in the first half and then becoming a threat in the 2nd half. Or some other reason, corrupt CEO using Titan DNA irresponsibly, ecoterrorist (maybe bring back Charles Dance), etc. Culminating in Biollante coming back to help Godzilla fight it at the end (sort of a plant de-toxifying thing to help drain pollutants from Godzilla or something).
EDIT: Personally I like the message of natural mixing of pollution and Titan DNA, backstory. Feels a bit more real with people in power ignoring issues until they blow up on them.
Yeah, I'm obviously not a professional writer. I did brainstorm ideas for new entries in franchises I like a lot during my old job when I was bored and have a pretty vast knowledge of the Godzilla franchise, though. Plus I really like the idea of secret agent Shobijin and a human-possessed by Ghidorah.
Some more ideas for Grand King Ghidorah:
I also thought about using Hedorah for this, but I figured the similarly environmentally-destructive Death Ghidorah with its already established anti-life (or at least anti-tree) aura would serve better as an anti-Titan and not be as on the nose as a literal pollution monster (plus both the original Death Ghidorah and Grand King Ghidorah appeared in the Rebirth of Mothra trilogy).
