Someone recommend something that really leans into good 4k/HDR? Pretty sure I recall Cyberpunk does, but I want more things to put my new toy through its paces. AC:Odyssey?

No man sky is sure pretty even if the gameplay makes me want to shove a fork into my eye.

I'm still sad Xbox got NMS after they changed the gameplay from the original idea of "just try to get to the center". :( It feels like now it's minecraft in space or something, and that's not what I was really up for, you know?

NMS still has a quest line you can play through with cool lore stuff

Gears 5 looks pretty goddamn good, they did a big series S/X patch a while back for it.

    yep! Also, Maneater! EAT MANs.

Listen to the guy who voices Jerry in Rick and Morty give out random shark facts!

edit: also since it's a game that you're underwater most of the time, the ray tracing feature comes to the fore.

edit: Watch Dogs: Legion is fun, and the 60fps patch is coming with more bugs soon, if you're needy of 60fps.

Flight simulator is only on pc tho at the moment?

Also anyone else played genesis noir, I’m stuck at the end on the bench with the two people. It looks clickable on either side of the screen but nothing happens

GoddAmnit, I quit and started the level again, thinking it would start where I was up to, but nope, have to do the whole ending again. Way to ruin the flow of your game and sour it for me last minute genesis noir

It sounds cliché as fuck, but for me it'd be more about the journey than the destination. The loop of scavenge, explore, repeat is probably one of my favorite things in say, Fallout; the NPCs can get bent, don't care about most of the quests... I just like exploring an in empty world with hints of what came before/a larger world you can't see. So in that respect, it'd have been perfect, you know?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the new version/setup is bad, right. It's just not as much my thing. I'd rather only enough construction/building/systems in order to keep my ship going/upgraded, and not worry about this whole "building" thing.

I could be wrong based on your personal preferences, but I STILL think you'd enjoy the new version a lot more. More diverse alien lifeforms and alien planets to see, better inventory design, better spaceship design and upgrade paths, etc.

Well, hard to say. I've played this one, and it turned into pure "build base", was finding I made slower and slower progress as I went on since I was always "abandoning" my base and that felt kind of bad. Not tried the other, of course.

It's not bad I mean. It just feels to me like a variant base-building game (Subautica, etc) now, which isn't as much what the other sounded like.

I could dig up some real butthurt (but well written) blog posts about how the original version was a real piece of shit (game design wise), but I don't think reading about bad games that don't exist anymore is a super productive use of time, shrug.

Honestly, I just think it's a matter of preference, it's just there's like... me and two other dudes what have that particular preference. Even more niche than "My Boyfriend Cthulhu", the elder-god dating sim. (Please, if that actually exists, just don't tell me. I realised it might about halfway through the preceding sentence, and I don't know if I can deal with the knowledge that someone may have been excited by writing a sex scene with Cthulhu oh no there's absolutely porn of that already.)

Yeah there was that Caldwell-Gervais video on No Man's Sky back when it came out that mentioned that a lot of the game was inspired by the lead dev's... I think it was a roadtrip through the Canadian wilderness? And that feeling of traveling hundreds of miles without seeing a single person. And that's where a lot of the emptiness and loneliness of the original release came from. I thought that sounded really interesting, and I'm kinda sad I missed the window to try that.

  • Local H JayLocal H Jay Registered User regular
I'm gonna be honest the game still has miles of wilderness if that's what you want. I found the game fairly boring even if it was very beautiful. Sounds to me like most people prefer the game as it is now compared to release. The co-op adds a lot.

Alright. Feel free to ignore these links, but I just wanted to provide a counter point to "this would probably have been something I would have loved, if only..." The writer of this did the "DM of the Rings" webcomic as well as other material on The Escapist back before that site was purged (for the first time). I found these articles fascinating at the time, it does sound like he enjoyed the recent version of the game + mods.

I put 80 hours into the original No Man's Sky.

I'm pretty sure everything I did in that playthrough is still in NMS in some shape or form. If you just want to fly around and explore, you can still do that.

It's still very empty, but there's now a huge amount more stuff to discover and do.

    SOR4 is getting it's long-expected and long-delayed DLC.

    https://youtu.be/4LwwRrI-NY0

The game already took some steps to fix the most atrocious "What the fuck were they thinking?" design decisions in the last major patch (not taking away 3/4 of the character's health at the start of the last stage, massive nerfs to the Commissioner, Max, and the Y-Twins, and their weird decision to lean hard on the Rolling Dudes in Y Castle which probably wasn't a great decision but still not as bad as many of their first ones), and it's hard to imagine them undoing those even if they could. Enemy mook hitboxes will probably continue to be kind of fucked up, but eh, you're not supposed to play this game alone anyway, at least the bosses have good hitboxes.

I've had nothing but praise for the artistic direction, and the sound track was good if not the best in the franchise (that probably still goes to SOR2, and SOR3 was far more adventurous but with mixed results). Making Estel a playable character was basically in-demand since the game launched (even before her two boss battles got tweaked in the patches), so that's probably overdue, and who doesn't like swordfish, lightsabers, and other weird weapons? Hopefully the new stages are able to match the existing ones aesthetically, and aren't obvious rehashes (or rely too much on bottomless pits and other environmental hazards).

Gonna rant about Outriders for a bit, but I'mma spoiler tag it because who fucking cares what I think.
Outsiders fuckin' sucks. It's janky and needed a few months of polish IMO. Cutscenes flicker when they start, juttering between two shots, characters facial animations are borked, causing their upper lips to scrunch up like cats, I've literally seen characters teleport around - not like as a power, but as a "Whoops, I spawned this character 4 feet in the air, better reset him to ground level.

And holy shit did they fuck up the cover system. How do you even do that when you can just rip off what Gears of War got right back in 2006!! It's unintiuitive, frequently doesn't do what you want it to, it's often to slow to avoid the shitty ass grenades that are constantly being lobbed at you (God I hate those fucking grenades) and it's a genuine barrier to enjoying the game.

Also I hate that I can't unbind the melee attack because I always hit the right stick on accident when I'm sniping and the melee attack ruins your shot. I'd rather just not have the attack at this point.

The default difficulty stuff is ridiculous and I don't know why it's turned on. I hit a terrible difficulty spike during Level 7 difficulty that nearly stopped me from playing the game. Also I'm at the point where I have to always be shooting to survive on my lifeleech, and so when I have to reload, it's dead time. I would turn down the difficulty, but I feel like that's not how the developers intended the game to be played.

I found a mechanic combo that broke the game for awhile, until I hit that aforementioned difficulty spike - Toxic Bullets plus LMG with a big clip plus a power that returns 30% of my clip back to me when I get a kill = infinite high damage bullets - and that was fun for a bit.

I do like the crafting system, and the ability to take a piece of gear taht's way better than what you got, but you don't have to abandon the cool power on a piece of gear you've been stuck with for 10 levels because of said power.

The voice acting is poor, the writing is terrible and the story is just not doing anythnig for me, even if it's the kind of scifi bullshit that should be right up my alley.

But for some reason I keep playing it, so I'm probably the problem here. I definitely would be absolutely livid if I had payed $60 for it and not gotten it with my Gamepass sub.

TL;DR despite doing a couple of things I think are cool, this game is janky and it doesn't play well, but I'm compelled to keep playing it because I'm a broken person.

    Probably two things

    1. Increased likelihood of it coming out on Gamepass, possibly day 1
    2. Decreased likelihood of it coming out on the PS5 at launch, or possibly at all.
