Yeah, I haven't read any Marvel in a number of years that wasn't Hulk or an X-Men book. Most of the comic line has been dead to me as someone who used to be a large fan. Been a lot of manga and creator owned comics for me.

The two things that kicked me off the brand were the character assassination that I thought couldn't be topped that was Civil War 2 that basically permanently destroyed the characters of Captain Marvel and Miss Marvel for me. Then Secret Empire said hold my goddamn beer and gave us fucking goddamn Nazi Cap and I was fucking done. Is Nazi Cap still around by the way? He still was at the end of the story even when they brought a version of normal Cap back. I still can't fucking defend that storyline at all.

Why defend it? To me, the triple whammy of those two and IvX was basically one of the worst years narratively that Marvel has ever had.

Hadn't heard that they killed Nazi Cap. Haha that's actually hilarious. Its funny to think that Spencer somehow thought someone would want to use Nazi Cap in the future so he weakens his own comics ending to keep him around and the first writer for Cap after him wastes no time sweeping him right under the carpet.

Civil War II and Secret Empire were real bad, no question, but since then they did War of the Realms and Empyre which were both pretty good

X of Swords was pretty good too...though Empyre and Swords both hitting so early in the building of the new status quo hurt the X-books to some extent for me.

Last thing I really read was HoX/PoX which I quite enjoyed. I also need to get back to Immortal Hulk after getting through the first few trades.

I had high hopes for X of Swords but the first issue didn't do much for me. Maybe I'll go back and give it a look.

There's a collected edition on Comixology, which at least sovles the stupid "try and read across multiple titles" thing. I wish marvel would stop doing that shit - it must makes bank on selling individual issues, but the reading experience is fucking *horrid*.

Immortal Hulk is kicking it out of the park. Very strongly recommend you check out Ewing current run on Guardians of the Galaxy if you havent already @SatanIsMyMotor - It's a very, very good, incredibly queer comic and it's great.

Actually, just, if Ewing has his name on a run right now, it's worth looking at.

Of the X stuff...Marauders and X-Factor are probably the standouts at this moment, but most of it is Very Good. S.W.O.R.D is great so far, but four issues in is too early for me to go yes, this is amazing - but again ,it's Ewing, so i have high hopes.

Oh, shit, i forgot to mention that one. Yes that's also Very Good and doing some important stuff.

I wish i could as easily recommended Coate's Captain America run, but it's not been hitting for me. (That said it recently pissed off Jordan Peterson, so you know, it wins massive props for that)

Daredevil is a huge surprise to me.

I knew Zdarsky had range but he is sorting some amazing stuff and as mentioned, hitting stuff that you normally don't see in a mainstream superhero comic.

I'm not! I'm just tired and not always able to remember everything that's good and interesting. (I'd really like the X-books to stop dancing around what happened to Gorgon and just show us. Krakoa-Gorgon's been an interesting character!)

Big What If spoilers out in the wild

We knew about PeggyCap, T’Challa Starlord, and doppelgänger Strange, but the rest are new. Very curious what’s going on with Thor there, was Loki worthy?

Kinda figured something like this might happen, won’t be shocked if they appear in live action whether in Strange 2 or otherwise.

Very curious what they do with this Starlord, hope they don’t have to cut him from the roster. If there’s a version of T’Challa that should be okay to recast, I think the AU version makes sense? Or just never have him take his mask off

I've moved left politically since I first fell for Evans Cap, so I'm not a huge of a fan of superman wrapped in USA costume as I once was, but this show is exploring his legacy in some interesting ways and Zemo is entertaining

while the show doesn't exactly say "american is imperialism is bad, both with a fist or a smile" it's more nuanced than I expected

I will say where I thought the episodic pacing really helped Wandavision, I it is hurting this for me to some extent. The character work is great and badly needed, but the pacing felt a little slow until this ep.

Cap has been an aspirational figure that clashes with the (albeit comic book) realities of the US apparatus enough times throughout his history that I still enjoy the character.

    That's cool

I see it a bit differently in the movies and even this show

The line between superhero /Avenger and military operative seem blurred to the point the show is putting them on equal footing, even with Sam, and obviously evil Walker

Sam seems to be working as a super tech agent of the air force or something while in his Falcon costume, at least in the first episode

    Which is problematic to me

And while he relates to and empathizes with Karli, the show paints her as a terrorist when she is written to kill civilians and be all "I don't care"

Sam did have his eyes opened with Isiah and is evolving and changing, but it sure seems like the problem of imperialism and supersoldier imperialism will be a bad apple rather than the whole concept

Yeah I think, in the comics anyway, Cap represents the ideals of America, not the realities. Theres a pretty famous old couple of panels of him complaining at a newspaper stand about us sending troops somewhere at whatever point.

I had a co-worker who balked at the thought of reading some Captain America comics because they'd reasonably assumed it's be a nationalistic rah rah rah vibe.
But the comics have at least from the 70s to 2000s or so been more often about the government failing to meet the standards. I'm not gonna argue it's a super lefty comic or anything, but the US government is an antagonist in the series half the time.
Walker's whole comic intro is during a period when Steve dropped the role on the government's insistence he do what they tell him to do, and we own the brand. So we went off and did his own thing in a different suit because to him the work was more important than the title and he wasn't gonna follow orders he didn't agree with.
Which they used that take in the Sokovia Accords stuff, that was more about following orders than the secret identity reveal/registration of the comics based Civil War.

In that context it'd be kind of interesting if they have Sam/Bucky decide the Cap title and brand isn't what's important and should just do what they do.

It's cool that the show is approaching things with a lot of angles but I fear the dabbling in it, because I don't believe they'd actually commit to any kind of strong take on the topics they're discussing.
Carly should have remained a powered activist breaking laws, stealing shit, and even starting fights where they felt it's needed without having to also work in callous blowing up people who didn't need to be there.
It's the character turn to make it ok for the heroes to have to take her down instead of it staying the moral quagmire you set out with. Like threatening the sister etc.
The government could have still been out to get them just on their provactive actions, you can still have Battlestar get killed in a fight setting Walker off. You can do all that without having to sandbag the complicated character. Like sure, make there be a body count, but make it a clash with security forces or something, not just I'm gonna blow up these prisoners.

  • MaddocMaddoc I'm Bobbin Threadbare, are you my mother? Registered User regular
Cap's entire story arc in the movies is pretty explicitly butting heads with authority, I dunno how else you could see Winter Soldier and Civil War

Like when the line between Avenger and government operative starts to blend, Cap straight up becomes a rogue agent for the remainder of his time in the franchise
