Oh. I may be misinformed! I assumed he had sold it and then disowned it.
But iirc there's no difference between minting and selling, it's still a part of the Blockchain and fucking up the environment... Forever.
At least he didn't earn any money from it? He did it pro bono?
from to looks of it, it got minted but it has never been sold
but my understanding of blockchain stuff is that the huge energy usage is for creating them, and then doing all the calculations for verification when selling and transferring them (well, it's a bit less modal than that, it's not like the servers only get started up when someone buys or sells, but when you're tracing the energy consumption of a single nft, it's taking into account the chunk of the ongoing energy consumption its using)
The energy usage of creating an NFT is a lot, and it continues to be high for future transactions, but that is a lot relative to other personal online activities. An average NFT minting is like 30-50kg CO2 emissions, or the equivalent of burning 3-5 gallons of gasoline.
While that is obviously ludicrous considering the sheer scale of NFT creation and the ease at which somebody can cause that much energy to be wasted, it is also not so absurd that a person who creates an NFT, realizes it's a dumb idea, and then never sells it needs to be hounded by it as if it outweighs all the good they've done in the world; it's closer to "went out on a speedboat for an afternoon" than "burned industrial quantities of trash outside a hospital"
Eh. They said that about bitcoin and many other cryptos. It's like the housing market. It may go down for little bit of time but it's only going up in the long run.

It's not at all like the housing market, because people need a place to fucking live.
Nobody fucking needs any sort of cryptocurrency or any sort of made up, super-fake, not-certified-in-any-way certification system invented that runs on cryptocurrency.
True. I wasn't saying that crypto is essential, only that it seems to only go up in the long run.
Bitcoin has been declared dead or dying roughly 390 times since 2010. But this year it’s dying much less frequently.
In 2020, bitcoin has been reported dead or dying only 11 times, per a list of these faux obituaries maintained by a Singapore-based website called 99 Bitcoins.
Fuck, that really nails some very specific feels I've had from living in nyc the last year, and then adds pregnancy on top of that and damn. Heavy stuff.
