Apparently the novelization came out today. For some reason I thought it wasn't coming out until later in the month.

I've already read a few claims about supposed differences between the book and the movie, though Wikizilla hasn't been updated yet and I haven't gotten a chance to read the book myself.

I will say that one supposed change is pretty interesting, if true:
Godzilla attacked the Monarch facility with the MechaGodzilla eye and attacked the fleet with Kong because he was being manipulated by a modified version of the ORCA device from KotM called the ORCA-Z. Walter Simmons and his daughter did this as part of an effort to make Godzilla look like a threat that needed to be disposed of. Cutting power to the fleet worked because it also cut power to the ORCA-Z device.

EDIT: I also just found this article from February that mentions, among other things,
scenes in the Hollow Earth featuring the ruins of the civilization that worshiped the Titans. Source

    Hoping that's in the novelization.

both in the movie and cut, although I think they bailed out of any mention of the Orca-Z by the time they got to shooting

Thank you for the confirmation! I can understand the Orca-Z being deemed ultimately unnecessary for the story, but I'll admit I'm a bit bummed we didn't get to see the ruins.

Oh well, maybe they'll be in the artbook.

I'm really excited to read the novelization, because I love greg keyes and he did a great job with KOTM

    ORCA-Z
I think they completely cut it from the fleet, which makes sense given it would be conflicting with the entire setup of fighting for alpha.

But for the facility, i thought it was implied as the eye was making the Orca sounds when the camera panned in on it.

I want to say i heard the Orca noise again later but I can’t remember when.

There's a definite pulsing both by the eye in the facility and by Mechagodzilla's eyes when it gets activated in Hong Kong, definitely supposed to be something detectable by Godzilla leading him to attack - but having it actually be intentional as opposed to a side effect of creating it out of Ghidorah parts etc would have been a difference.

The fandom wiki says that the original ill-fated mission to Hollow Earth was to bring an ORCA-z down there to get the titans to return to the HE and stop smashing stuff on land.
But, you know, fandom, so take with a Godzilla sized grain of salt.
Sounds like an entire sub plot might have been cut out of the film. Hope they didn't do that just so we could have more wacky podcaster shenanigans.

Picked up the novelization today. I've got other things I have to get done today, but I've managed to read the first 32 pages of it. Unlike the movie, the novelization starts out with basically a rundown of events that took place between KotM and GvK.
    • Three years ago, a rogue Monarch scientist who worked for the installation that held the Titan Kraken (given here the alternate name Titanus Na Kika) aided in capturing the Titan near an oil rig off the coast of Russia using a special net and a submarine stolen from a ruined Monarch facility. A benefactor who goes by the name Rosales (Who may possibly be Walter Simmons? Unsure at this point) shows up via helicopter only to bail when Godzilla, accompanied by Monarch fighter jets, appears. The fighter jets skirmish with helicopters and turrets as Godzilla frees his fellow Titan before using his breath to destroy the rig.
    • Around the same time, Walter Simmons is approached by an unnamed man (who is almost definitely Alan Jonah from KotM). The man says he has two heads for Simmons (curious where he got the second one), and that he needs money for some mysterious endeavor.
    • One year ago, Dr. Nathan Lind and his brother Dave are preparing to begin an expedition into the Hollow Earth through tunnels beneath Skull Island using specially designed craft. In this segment we learn a bit more about the Hollow Earth and Lind's theories; he brings up the multiple mass extinctions that have occurred in Earth's past and postulates that life survived because it originally began in the Hollow Earth and reemerges following mass extinction events. He further states that he thinks some kind of human relative lives, or at least lived, in the Hollow Earth. Nathan is afraid that the storm consuming Skull Island will complicate the mission and may have rendered the way to the Hollow Earth unstable. He says that they should try Antarctica's Hollow Earth entrance, but Dave is afraid that the funding from Monarch will be cut if they don't proceed soon. Dave flies his craft through the storm and into Skull Island's Hollow Earth entrance successfully, making it through the Vortex. Unfortunately, Nathan underestimated the speed that Dave's craft would be shot out at, causing the craft to nearly instantly crash upon emergence.
    • Eleven months ago, the Iwi people of Skull Island are forced to evacuate their village and try to make it to caves unconnected to the Hollow Earth. Jia is with them and ends up the only survivor following an attack from a "Sirenjaw" and a sudden flood of water from the mountains. Kong passes nearby, searching for something. Jia knows that there is no way Kong will see her but closes her eyes and offers a prayer to him. When she opens them, she discovers that Kong has approached and offers to carry her to safety in this hand.
    • In the present day, Godzilla sleeps in a sanctuary. He dreams of when "a tiny creature, one of his" reached out to touch him before an "obliterating light" followed (clearly a reference to Serizawa's sacrifice in KotM, but interesting to see that Godzilla refers to humankind as "his"). He also dreams of a time when "many of his kind lived, fighting always, and the New Ones came to try and claim dominance" (the Kongs, I assume). It's mentioned that Godzilla commanded the other Titans to go and rest before himself finding a new sanctuary, claiming it from its former inhabitant. This former inhabitant was apparently fought by multiple Godzillas in the distant past and was driven into hiding before eventually returning to its lair, where Godzilla somehow managed to kill it and keep its skull as a trophy (I'm assuming this will be covered in the upcoming Godzilla: Dominion graphic novel). Godzilla senses something that bothers him, causing him to awaken. He's somehow able to instantly discern that all of the Titans but one are still resting, as he commanded, and is angry that one of them is not where they should be (I assume this is Kong).

It seems that after this the novel transitions to the beginning of the movie itself. I'm curious if any of this was ever intended to be in the movie or if this is all unique to the novelization. I'm guessing not, save for maybe the portion with the person who is more than likely Alan Jonah from KotM or the portion with Dr. Lind and his brother.

These are interesting, and almost certainly from an earlier, longer draft of the screenplay. Particularly the backstory for our male lead actually being shown rather than told to us in a couple sentences

My favorite part of this though is
the idea of Godzilla taking a trophy like he's the motherfucking Predator

I imagine that's something Toho said "no" to! The idea of a trophy certainly makes sense for a primate like Kong, something more on our level, but less so for a big giant radioactive and unknowable dinosaur like Godzilla

Honestly, the removal of that character would have improved the movie for me. I really enjoyed pretty much everything else, but every time the movie when back to Bernie's plotline I was like, "Oh, this fucking guy again." If that character hadn't been there, I'd probably put GvK at least on par with Skull Island (my favorite so far). As is, it's basically tied with KotM for my second-favorite.

Managed to read a bit more of the GvK novelization:
    - If Ilene Chen is in the book I haven't gotten to her yet. I assume, given the hints about Jia and Kong having a supernatural connection, that Chen was originally there less for Kong and more to help Jia in developing a bond similar to the one then Chen sisters have with Mothra. Dr. Andrews, in contrast, is stated to have worked with both Kong and the Iwi people for ten years.
    - Skull Island is stated to be effectively a rotting, waterlogged mess outside of Kong's dome. It's also implied that the Iwi people may not actually be completely gone, only assumed to have been wiped out.
    - The first major change since starting the section of the book that includes scenes from the movies is one from Mark Russell's perspective. It's noted that Madison is advanced and mature for her age to the point that she dislikes most of her peers and wants to be homeschooled. There's also a reference to an aunt. Madison also refers to Bernie's podcast as "Mad Truth" instead of "Titan Truth Podcast".

    hoo boy, okay

this will probably be my last post about changes from GvK unless/until I sit down and just do a huge tell-all post, which frankly I’m waiting to see if they announce a sequel before I do since I don’t want to state plans for a movie that hasn’t come out yet (yes, there were plans for a fifth movie as early as 2018, if not earlier, no, I don’t know what’s going to happen with it, if anything)
so Jessica Henwick played Nathan (Skarsgard)’s fiancé. in the original opening of the movie, there was a huge televised event, on par with the moon landing, about the first expedition into Hollow Earth via Skull Island, ideally to either close it or lure the Titans back into it. the shot of Maddie in school watching the Pensacola attack was originally supposed to be her watching this. this was supervised by Skarsgard. that goes horribly wrong, and Henwick is trapped or killed within Hollow Earth, it’s not clear what happened

Skarsgard, distraught, is fired from Monarch, but Apex approaches him and offers to find another expedition to Hollow Earth so Skarsgard can try to rescue Henwick, as they have proof she survived, a radio transmission, so Skarsgard’s motivation is to save Henwick

once they get to the temple they find Henwick’s team, dead, and Eiza Gonzalez would reveal that faked the radio transmission to lure Skarsgard into helping

the rest of it pretty much goes the same, and as far as I know they filmed the bulk of what I’m describing, I know for a fact they filmed the first failed expedition

they cut all of that, changed Skarsgard’s emotional hook to his dead brother, and here we are

in my opinion, it was the right call. we get into the movie early, we get to the monsters sooner, we don’t get bogged down with human stuff which nobody wants to see anyway

That must've been an interesting gig!

Sorry if you've already mentioned it @YaYa but what was your involvement with the film? That is really interesting.

I was Wingard’s assistant for his burgeoning production company, which meant I did a lot of odd jobs on the movie while they were getting the company on its feet

Read some more of the Godzilla vs Kong novelization and, uh, Bernie (the conspiracy theory guy) has officially moved up in my opinion from "forgettable comic relief" to "the most interesting human character in the Monsterverse".
In the movie, all we find out about Bernie is that his wife died at some point, he runs a conspiracy theory podcast, and he's been undercover at APEX.

The novelization reveals A LOT of backstory to this guy:
    • Bernie's wife Sara worked for Apex even before Godzilla and the MUTOs attacked San Francisco in Godzilla 2014. Following the attack she began to talk about the monsters at home often, which Bernie found a bit curious.
    • Later, Sara suddenly quit her job, leading to tensions that caused the couple to take a break. Just as things were looking up she was involved in a car accident and died at the hospital.
    • Weeks later, Bernie discovered a note Sara had hidden at home that read "Godzilla>Apex>Monarch Contract>shipping manifest>component for bomb." The next day he applied for a position to Apex.
    • Bernie started the Titan Truth Podcast under the pseudonym Mad Truth. He also came to believe that Apex agents had caused the car "accident" that killed Sara.
    • After the events of KotM, a number of disgruntled Monarch employees approached Bernie to share what they know about a connection between Apex and Monarch that has since been buried.
    • The "bomb" Sara had found out about was none other than the Oxygen Destroyer that was used in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Apex had been informed of the other Titans by Monarch and was commissioned to create a weapon to kill them (presumably while most of them were still in containment).

I've just gotten to the part where Godzilla arrives in Pensacola, but as of now I suspect that Bernie's more outlandish claims and behaviors are all an act to make him seem less competent than he is. He knows Monarch was connected to Apex and believes Apex killed his wife after she discovered the company had been contracted by Monarch to create a weapon against the Titans, so even when he introduces himself to Mark Russell at the end of the movie he could have bigger ambitions than just getting Mark on his podcast. He might be looking for an in to Monarch to go undercover within it just as he did Apex.

That's the most interesting detail I've discovered, but definitely not the only one:

    Godzilla and the Titans
Godzilla commanded the Titans to find sanctuaries and rest until some future time, but not all were onboard with this. Scylla attacked Savannah, Georgia after detecting a nuclear bomb lost off the nearby coast (which is a real thing, BTW). Another Titan, Amhuluk, attacked Behemoth, but Godzilla appeared to help Behemoth defeat Amhuluk. Neither of these Titans were killed but instead submitted to Godzilla and went to slumber as commanded.

Jia and the Enmity Between Godzilla and Kong
The movie doesn't elaborate on how Jia knows about Godzilla, so one would assume she just learned about him because he's common knowledge. In the novelization, though, it's revealed that the people of Skull Island believed their ancestors had long ago joined the Kongs in a war against the evil Zo-zla-halawa, monsters that had consumed stars and could release their burning light. Ultimately, the Kongs and their human allies were forced to flee from the Hollow Earth by not only the Zo-zla-halawa, but by the "bad people" who had allied themselves with the evil monsters. Dr. Andrews shows Jia various images of Godzilla, who she identifies as a Zo-zla-halawa, before claiming that if Kong and Godzilla were to ever fight she will have to somehow help Kong kill Godzilla.

This obviously puts the scene in the final movie where Jia tells Kong that Godzilla is not his enemy into a much different context.

    Mark Russell
Kyle Chandler's unpopular character indeed gets more scenes in the novelization, though we got some interesting tidbits of information through them. We learn the Titans healed much ecological devastation, and climate change was even beginning to reverse. However, human activities are still causing ecological damage, and Mark is afraid that Godzilla only helped humanity against Ghidorah because it was the greater of two evils. With Ghidorah gone, he fears Godzilla will eventually identify humankind as a threat that needs to be acted against. He also thinks it's possible that human terrorists will try to take advantage of the slumbering Titans.

Mark is also skeptical of the claim that King Ghidorah was actually an alien since knowledge concerning the evolution of the Titans is nearly non-existent. I'm curious if this is a hint that King Ghidorah wasn't an alien, after all, but that perhaps he was created by an advanced civilization in the Hollow Earth at some point? Could be nothing, could be something, IDK.

in my opinion, it was the right call. we get into the movie early, we get to the monsters sooner, we don’t get bogged down with human stuff which nobody wants to see anyway

If people can get invested in the characters in one franchise full of big flashy fight scenes (the MCU) I don't see why it's impossible to get people to care about the human characters in the MonsterVerse.

So long as they keep putting out novelizations that go into more detail on things the movies skim over, though, I won't complain too much.

I've especially enjoyed the revelation in the GvK novelization that
Bernie actually knows way more than he lets on to the point that he probably knows more about Monarch than all the characters working for Monarch in this franchise know about Monarch.

I think there is probably a happy middle ground of human plots that are decent as well as plenty of monster action. I don't even hate Mark as a character, he was just silly in KotM's. Someone could write a better plot for him in a future movie.

They could just go the Final Wars route and have every scene be an action scene. :P

I think a decent amount of it is also considering everything in the last year and change, a lot of us are tired and just want to get to the monkey fight lizard portion of the movie.

I'm excited to read the novelization and will devour those scenes on DVD, but for a movie experience in March of 2021 I want to have several beers and watch an imax sized brawl and not worry about people and their petty concerns

Reading more of the novelization, apparently people do know exactly who Madison's mother was. There's not even any mention of attempts to hide it.

More importantly, though, is this part about Godzilla and radiation:
Godzilla emits some unknown form of energy, though he is capable of converting conventionally-understood radiation into another form of energy that does not resemble nuclear particles and waves. Dr. Lind believes that this energy is related to quantum states. Earlier in the book, it's also stated that the Vortex leading to the Hollow Earth does "funny things with time"...

Pretty sure this is a full blown retcon, but I'm 100% okay with it.
