Is there a way to check the increase provided by Handicraft 2, versus w/e is listed on Kiranico or whomever?
I guess you could just linearly divide the bonus sharpness gauge into fifths, because it's a linear progression that adds +10 Sharpness each level (up to +50).
Evade Extender is...Really Nice on my dual blades set, but A. it also affects the air dodge for Insect Glaive and B. I'm not used to how far it sends me and my aim is really off, so I'm considering ditching it on my glaive set.
So gunlance shells and wrymfire aren't affected by attack and can't crit (affinity)? I'm guessing they can't weakness exploit or anything either? Kind of makes it easier to ignore most of these armours.
Do gunlance shells count as blunt/stunning?
You've basically got Artillery and Load Shells
Last I knew, Gunlance didn't do KO damage
Apparently in Rise, Wide gunlances specifically can stun if you hit something in the head with a Wyrmstake. I have no idea how useful that actually is, but hey. The more you know.

Sharpness affect shelling damage as well, so those boosts work.
Shells lose damage in orange, but are otherwise completely unaffected by sharpness.

Yeah, just figure out what I want to do for an armor set, and I guess it looks like Handicraft 2 probably isn't worth it, except maybe for Fortis Gran. The other weapons I was going to use either only get White at 4/5, or don't get white even with 5...
But the set does look to have
Crit Element 3
Crit Eye 4
Attack Boost 4
Element Attack 5
I could drop Handicraft for maybe WEX or more attack boosts...

It kinda sucks that they're seemingly giving so many weapons the ability to deal KO damage, but aren't giving the hammer and horn ways to deal cut damage.
There was a time when you chose bladed weapons/guns to cut tails, and hammer/hunting horn to KO the head. Now feels like through switch skills and alternate moves a lot more weapons are getting KO?
Look I just want to be able to cut tails with my horn.

I feel like Earth Shaker should be able to cut tails. It's essentially using the silkbind wire as a garrote that you strum.

I have doubts about the viability of Crit Element. It seems like even in idealized circumstances and 100% crit it would increase your damage by, like...one.

I wonder if Kunai can cut tails. In past games, you could deal the damage threshold needed to cut a tail with a Blunt weapon and then just an itty-bitty amount of slashing damage would cut the tail (like using a Boomerang or something).

In past games the horn had a special little hilt jab attack that could cut tails this way. It wasn't amazing but it worked!

This gets kind of complicated because it is around 1, maybe almost 2 (depending on affinity) damage per hit, but if you assume and average motion value of 20 per DB attack, thats still a decent chunk of flat damage added per hit. If I did all this fucking crazy ass math correctly, assuming a MV of 20, a Raw hitzone of 60, and an elemental hitzone of 30, you are looking at eg. 32 raw and 11 dragon per hit with Fortis Gran (with all of the skills included). I guess Crit ele is still only about 5% of your element there, but idk. Math is hard.
Looking at MHW values, I think I overestimated MV's for DB, and elemental damage is worth maybe even more.

The longer I play Rise the less I like the spiribird system and the more I like the endemic life system.
My main/only problem with the spiribirds is that the stamina ones raise your cap without actually filling it.
My problem is it feels like the game is gently forcing you into palamute usage with it, which I do. And then fast travel to the camp and get my 2nd palico.
Also, the game feels tuned entirely on getting spiribirds as a must-do, since Magnamalo has 2 hits that will one-shot you if you don't. Unless they tune monster attack damage higher in multiplayer quests which I didn't think to be the case.
I ignore Spiritbirds, for the most part, and I haven't been one-shot by anything. At least, with a Melee weapon. Maybe when going Gunner (which has less physical resistance) it might happen? But I have maximum possible Armor with all of my saved sets, plus Armor Charm plus Armor Talon.
EDIT: I also run Felyne Moxie as a precaution, but I haven't seen it activate from full health yet.
That's what I was doing until a fucking Mizutsune one-shot me.
yeah i just hit hr6 and i'm shook at some heavy hits doing 70-75%
my shit is fully upgraded
I have 300+ armor total, all fully upgraded, had the Dango Armor (hi), Dango Monster Weakener, and was at full health with a demon petallace without any spiribirds and got one shot by Magnamalos dive attack.
I'm no longer using the demon petallace, which tbf didn't really drop my damage much but it boosted my health.
Again, this could just be my imagination, but I feel like after this patch monsters have been hitting a fucking lot harder.
Oh, I could see dying in one hit if you already have Hellfire as a status on you. That shit will tack on some extra explosive damage to the next hit you take.
EDIT: I don't think Monster Weakener actually reduces the damage of an attack. It just increases the chances that you get a Smallest Crown small monster, which in past games also meant they had slightly less health.
I think the only things that can one shot me in my current gear are really heavy, telegraphed tail slams from narga (curse you flooded forest) and the final boss (greeeeeed) and probably Rathalos's new flame swipe? Haven't gotten hit by that last one in a while, but it definitely turbo murdered me when I was wearing slightly worse gear.
There's a lot of things that can chunk gunners for 70-90% though, even with fully upgraded gear.
does the petalace affect health if you aren't getting birds that much? i assumed it wouldn't matter much and that picking up a tiny amount of extra damage was more impactful than a little health.

Pair this with a robust new morality system that lets you know immediately that the monster you are stalking is an anti-vaxxer or has made uncomfortable passes at female coworkers, and we’re talking about a game that’s not only a blast to play, but also really cares about easing the burden on your conscience!
Seamlessly integrated into the gameplay, accessing the new Problematic Stats system is as simple as locking onto a monster, popping open the radial menu, and selecting “offenses” to discover that, say, the Barroth in front of you once screamed at an elderly supermarket cashier back in the late aughts and that there’s video evidence to boot!
When you see that a monster listens to Ben Shapiro’s podcast, the thought “Why am I hurting this animal?” immediately drops out of your head and instead becomes “How can I hurt this animal?”
Sorry Wroggi, but that’s what you get for continuing to enjoy the works of Orson Scott Card!

I think the issue is that they tuned things up with wirebugs, so monsters have a lot more ability to get in hits you weren't prepared for, and then dropping a big hit on you and taking the other ~75% of your health. I definitely ran into this trying to hunt Narga, where I feel like I got 1 shot by a tail pound, but its also entirely possible he caught me with a spike shot or something, chipped me but not enough to really trigger the "oh shit, heal" response, and then caught me in a follow up for more than I thought I had left.

Although shells technically do a pittance of fire damage on top of the rest, shells can't crit, so crit element couldn't possibly affect them.

Well yeah I mean, when I kill a monster logically I can just cut it off after they're dead, right?
