are there people in the UK that still like her? because we've got them over here
Any british person can feel free to correct me but my impression is that she's reagan-esque in that she is either pure evil or god's gift to humanity depending on which perception of reality you subscribe to
Except non-conservative british people seem way less hesitant to badmouth her than say, democrats are to badmouth reagan
Iron Lady youtube movie scenes are just puzzling out of context
Marty: The future, it's where you're going? Doc: That's right, twenty five years into the future. I've always dreamed on seeing the future, looking beyond my years, seeing the progress of mankind. I'll also be able to see who wins the next twenty-five world series.

Like, I can't imagine a panel of comedians on tv joking about throwing a party at reagan's funeral, or a news station airing a person saying they wish they could jab a stake on reagan's heart to make sure he couldn't come back
We absolutely have people that feel that way (I'm one of them!) but it's not a position that gets represented in the media even slightly. Instead you have democrats saying "actually we're basically just reagan except for maybe one or two social positions"

Probably because anyone who would make those jokes would be fucking blackbagged by the Secret Service? Might have something to do with it.

I think Thatcher was a controversial leader even in the 80s/90s whereas Reagan was almost unilaterally popular until very, very recently.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
People definitely hated Reagan at the time too. Or at least my father and much of my extended family. Just somehow post office and especially post death a weird, he was beloved by all and the republican republicans aspire to be narrative was allowed to take hold and throttle political discussion.

I'm thinking of the 525 -13 Electoral College map.

The blunt answer for "Why are Democrats afraid to criticize Reagan" is that Reagan is responsible for one of the biggest Democrat losses in history. He fucking obliterated Mondale, he only lost Washington DC and Mondale's home state. Put the fear of god in them.
He also had a number of victories that looked very effective in the short term. We know that Reaganomics is a farce, but it had enough short-term gains compared to the economic stagnation that it looked like it worked at the time. He got to claim that he ended the Cold War. He continued the War on Drugs, which people loved, because they HATED black people. And he successfully got a bunch of queers killed because of his inaction on AIDS, which was also very popular.
He became the figurehead of Conservatism, and because the Democratic Party really really wants Conservatives to vote for them, they suck him off.

If you're looking at approval ratings, Reagan was double-digits behind George H.W. and Clinton in both average approval and peak approval. What he had was a historically unprecedented divide where the whole entire Establishment loved his ass and most of the people who hated him came pre-disenfranchised.
Anyway, I'm reading a real good book about the arms race, and the extent to which every other world leader thought he was an incompetent boob is hysterical.
I remember being confused by the Thatcher stuff as a kid because we had a local politician named Margaret Thratcher and for a long time I was confused why so many people cared about a Yellowknife mayor
Yeah I don't really know what Thatcher's voting record looked like. Probably with that much open spite in media it was much tighter.
Reagan wins relection by about as far a margin as you can get, but you still have 38 million folks voting no thanks to more of that. The electoral college always makes thing look more severe. But even by popular vote it was not remotely close. The dissenting opinions on Reagan though were abnormally squashed/not represented in the aftermath, and his sort of political deification.
I agree with the gnome's assessment. Nothing beats electability in US politics, your principles don't mean much if you don't get the job etc. Barf.

I assume the reason people are able to be more openly insulting towards Thatcher over Reagan has at least a little to do with how Thatcher was a woman wielding power as opposed to Reagan who was a man. They both deserve the derision, mind you, people just can't get on a powerful man for being forceful and ruthless, because that's seen as a positive trait in white men. In women it makes them an angry, miserable bitch. With Reagan people feel like they have to cite political reasons to hate him so they either stay out of it or skip straight to ableism about his obvious dementia.

Oh absolutely there is a gender dynamic going on, with Thatcher having the reputation as cold whereas Reagan was a lovable goof and they both had nearly identical politics and horrible shit.

My old boss was the showrunner on Leverage, and he is absolutely steamed about how hard he has to try to make villains look sophisticated and smart when in reality they're paying underage sex workers via public venmo, using government credit cards
As I figure it, much of our major institutional media are in the tank for the conservatives and have been for decades. I don't think they know how not to be. The people telling everyone the media is against the conservatives are those same conservatives. I make a point of not taking anything the conservative movement says at face value, and I see no reason to start believing their statements about the media now.
Reagan is lauded, because most of the people publishing that political conversation have always been on his side.
I could be wrong though, there's a lot of history I didn't see.
The only good thing to come of Ronald Reagan's existence is that I saw a City of Villains character named Ronald Raygun and he was a man in a suit with dark hair who used a raygun.

While that is no doubt true, I think it could also come down to the concentration, so to speak, of Thatcher's effect. Her policies made a lot of money for Londoners, while completely destroying the economies of Scotland and the north of England.
Reagan's hate is more spread out and so has to live with pushback. If you opine "Fuck Thatcher" up north everyone just nods. So it snowballs, and you don't even think about the possibility that morons might disagree, which emboldens you to casually say it whenever, wherever.

This doesn’t even touch the racist pandering to claw back votes from the National Front

no it is good that they will stay dead forever. 1 death is nice actually
Yeah I don't care how they feel to make them suffer further. I'm just glad they're gone.
They can't feel anything anyway, because they're dead as fuck.
