Couple of things since AGDQ is over
1) All GDQ revenue (post-taxes, etc.) from Twitch subs and bits to the GDQ channel goes to the Prevent Cancer Foundation for the entire month of January.
2) There is a GDQ TASBot retrospective going on the GDQ channel now.

I'm a little sad they were so far behind their high... but given that A, it was online, and B, a coup was attempted during the run time... I'm overall very happy with what I saw of GDQ this year.

The coup undoubtedly affected donations, I had my TV turned to news for two days instead of AGDQ

Also the massive and ever-present economic anxiety.

I just learned that Twitch is starting to rotate POGChamp.
This is awesome, as long as it is truly random and not just promoting certain people/brands. I really hope some of my favorite streamers get into the rotation eventually. I wonder if there is a standard format for POG that lets Twitch pick up on it?
I'm happy all January subs count, since my Prime sub doesn't refresh till the middle of the month.
For the PogChamp thing, they're likely only rotating through ones that have been submitted to them and that they have vetted first. So that'll probably mean big names get first dibs.

I imagine that's why they take the entire month.
In other news, the Hotfix Show "The Community Spotlight" has been running some back-up GDQ runs today on the GDQ Twitch channel if you want some more speedruns.
Is there a page that has all the recommended runs? I already watched the blindfolded Mario 64 speedrun, and I'm currently being enthralled by the Mr. Bones, which I believe made me a fan of Lizstar specifically.
You know what? Nanowrimo's cancelled on account of the world is stupid.

Fallen Order is interesting if you’ve played the game
Watch Super Orb Bros
The Pokémon blue run is kind of a mess but has GREAT commentary
Celeste on a dance pad is insane
My highlight is the OHKO Megaman run

Mentioned on my first post! Immediately pulled up a bunch of other Lizstar Let's Plays. The Megaman DOS run was amazing, but it isn't Mr. Bones, is it?

If you are looking at older speed runs I always recommend PJ’s runs of Lagoon

I was sad there was no PJ this year, although it was a great event.

The whole of the Awful block was great!
Two back-to-back World Records there too!
Here's my list:
The entire Awful Block, starting with Legend of Zelda Wand of Gamelon
Turok
Beatsaber (very good if you like that sort of thing)
Just Cause 3
Dragon Age Origin, because nostalgia
Ghostbusters
ALL the Sonics
Diablo III Coop run
All the Mega Mans
Shovel Knight
Cuphead
Hades
F.E.A.R.
DMC 3
Lightmatter
Ori race
Mario 35
Left 4 Dead
SMW2
X-Men
All the TASBot ones
Honestly, the list of ones I would not recommend are much shorter (basically games I don't think I'd go back and watch again) :
Metroid NES Race - it didn't go as planned, and was kind of a dud
Diddy Kong Racing - I just don't care for the game. Like, not that the runner was bad, quite the opposite, but I just don't care for the game
The long runs, like Pokemon. For me, it's just too long. It was super interesting to watch live and have everything explained, but I don't know if I would go back and watch it.
Same for Final Fantasy

I'm watching the Sonic 1 and 3 runs now (well, not simultaneously, you know what I mean.) Out of curiosity, I don't recognize most of the songs on the soundtracks. Are they different for these versions, or is it avoiding a copyright strike?
Edit: Okay, some of the songs are literally talking about Totinos. That doesn't answer my question exactly, but at least I know I'm not going insane.

Apparently it's somewhat common for speedrunners to mod the soundtrack of those versions, and this time they decided to make the songs in the GDQ run assorted meme remixes. They go through it a bit after the end of the Sonic 3 run, IIRC.

If anyone has questions about volunteering, particularly hosting, feel free to ask them here or to me via PM. The online format leads to great ways to contribute without leaving the comfort of your home!
Good on them for moving it. I imagine with vaccines in the US going smoothly, the temptation to try and hold a live event, even a limited one, is really strong.

Even with vaccinations and such proceeding, we still have a lot of chucklefucks in America not doing it and not following safety measures. So at the very least we need to buy time for our infrastructure (hospitals) to be able to handle the instances of idiots getting themselves / each other sick.
AGDQ 2022 is the first reasonable chance to have an in-person event, though they'd have to be reserving space for it like... now.

This is the same madman that set the previous record by playing with his system on top of a hotplate.
The first cartridge swap with Dr. Mario comes immediately after the first save. Once you see the Dr. Mario menu screen, switch it out to Kirby and then immediately back to Dr. Mario. Once you’re back in Dr. Mario, it requires going into two-player mode and selecting the 1P virus level at 20 and the 2P level at 0. Then press right 15 times on the 2P speed option.
After the Dr. Mario and Kirby’s Adventure swaps, go back to Dragon Quest III. Next is the Final Fantasy swap that troubled Hitshee in a previous run. According to the speedrunner, if you swap out Final Fantasy with the power left on, it leads to an opening scene loop. If done correctly, it throws you into the Final Fantasy overworld, and you can swap back to Dragon Quest III.
Back in Dragon Quest III, your party stats should be maxed out. The game should look buggier than before, and the music will sound bugged out as well. This part requires a series of item code rewrites done by looking at certain items held by party members. Once you’re ready, Zoom your way to Ladutorm Castle in Tantegel to save your game. This time when you restart, copy the save from slot 1 to slot 3 and start with the slot 3 save. If you do everything correctly up to this point, you should be greeted with the ending scene.
My new Mario 64 strat: start up Hey You, Pikachu, and use the mic to convince Pikachu that life is meaningless and the only true reason for living is to accumulate power and wealth. Then, transfer over to Mario 64 and Pikachu will beat the game and dethrone Bowser, bit not to save the princess. No, Pikachu is now in charge of the Mushroom Kingdom, and rules it with an iron Pika-fist.
8:27 WR
We have a new Super Mario Bros world record btw, 4:54.948 by Nifski
Estimates based on TASing put this at nearly the fastest humanly possible time, it's actually impossible to save another full second due to the way the game transitions between stages

SGDQ 2021 Online Volunteer applications are open! The event is online so to volunteer you need a computer with Internet connectivity, Discord, and a web browser. Some positions, such as hosting, will have more requirements. Neither prior experience nor ties to speedrunning are needed. I've been a host twice now and I do not speedrun and am I not a part of a speedrunning community. The goal is to get competent people together to raise money for charity. Volunteer positions are:
1) Hosts - Be the disembodied voice reading donations and keeping hype levels up.
2) Stream Checkers - Ensure that everyone has the appropriate settings and audio levels prior to going live.
3) Donations - Give initial approval for donations to be passed on to hosts.
4) Head Donations - Give final approval for donations to be passed on to hosts. I would expect prior experience with regular donation processing to be necessary to get this position.
Before applying, read the official GDQ volunteering FAQ. The FAQ contains a bunch of information that applies to only in-person events, but it is still useful for describing GDQ expectations. To apply, make a GDQ account and then click the "Submit Volunteer Application" button on your profile page. Complete the application as it instructs and submit.
There are other volunteer positions involving social medial and Twitch moderation that are typically opened closer to the event, but I cannot say for certain how applying to those will work.
hmm, since I'm in Japan my "normal" available time would probably fit into slots that are normally weird hours for America/Europe, so I might actually have something to offer
hosting some runs would definitely be a pretty awesome experience

also the Doom 2016 100% run is fantastic, as is the most recent Doom Eternal one
