Ah yes the backflip that she received no point for because women figure skaters weren't allowed to do them. She was also routinely scored lower because she "didn't fit the image and her style was too athletic for a female figure skater." Clearly not racist undertones there.

figure skating is one of those things where the obvious bullshit judging makes it hard for me to understand why anyone takes it seriously

Every time someone mentions they want to see x sport in the Olympics I'm like "why so it can also be ruined by bad officiating and corruption?"

I would expand that to ones that have minimal chance of being ruined by bad judging. What with judges being pulled from countries that are likely to not make the final thus being inexperienced in their sport.

well the other issue is that judges are often biased towards their own country

the russian figure skating judges are notorious for that

It wasn't even "no points" - they actively penalized her for the flip, and specifically claimed "insolence" as the reason.

If I remember correctly at that point in her career Bonaly was basically Done with the racist bullshit in the competitive world and knew the judges would ding her on general principle; she did the backflip (1) for the audience and (2) as a way of saying "fuck you, we all know who's the better skater right now" to the judges.

As I recall she wasn't able to execute the planned set due to a previous injury (omitting a triple Lutz, I believe, which seemed to be basically a requirement for a high score), did the flip, and finished her routine with her back to the judges

Marty: The future, it's where you're going?
Doc: That's right, twenty five years into the future. I've always dreamed on seeing the future, looking beyond my years, seeing the progress of mankind. I'll also be able to see who wins the next twenty-five world series.

Anyone with a candle can witness some incredibly fucking weird shit that I don't understand myself.

If you light a candle, and let it stay lit for a few minutes, it does this weird thing. You can extinguish the candle, and while smoke is coming off the wick, light the smoke and the flame will just zip down the smoke and reignite the wick.

I'm not sure that's what's going on in the video, but it might be!

So it's not smoke (or at least not entirely). A distinct portion of that is aerosolized wax. (That's actually what burns when you light a candle, not the wick itself, nor the solid wax, nor even the melting liquid wax, it's the wax that heats up so much that it becomes a gas, then it ignites). So because this is what is actually burning when you are burning a candle, you can then re-ignite it. The flame expands in _both_ directions from where you light it, though it usually runs out of wax to burn in the upwards direction, until it hits the candle again, which is still putting off the gaseous wax, and it re-ignites.

What's going on with the bubble, though, looks like he puts accelerant in the lower bubble, uses differential pressure between the large bubble and the outside air to begin ejecting the gas from the bubble, and just lets it ignite. The differential is just slight enough that it escapes slowly, at effectively the same speed that the gas burns, otherwise it would either gutter out or accelerate down the plume and ignite the reservoir in the bottom of the bubble (like it does at the end of the video, just more vigorously).
