The first Pillars of Eternity had a middle aged woman who just wandered around with you and provided advice and didn't really interact with the rest of the party, she was great

    Is this a bit about
    Grieving Mother?

Yeah. If you ever ask your other party members what they think of her they'll have essentially not noticed her or not realize that she's been traveling with you.

Wait... who was that? I played PoE years ago, but I totally do not remember that character.

I think she might be my favorite character from that game. Everyone else felt like something I'd seen before, even if they were exceptionally well executed (I really like the Sagani and Pallegina narratives, for instance). But she was more or less completely new, even when she was retreading familiar territory.

you can make her literally vanish into thin air
I had her in the party when I, um, told a kid to go somewhere they shouldn't and she up and vanishes and eder goes "hey did anyone feel something?"

Buying an new SSD could be about to become as difficult as buying a new, next-gen graphics card in the coming months thanks to the rise of a new cryptocurrency known as Chia. According to a new report from HKEPC (thanks Hexus), storage prices in Hong Kong have soared in recent days as miners snap up high capacity drives in anticipation of Chia being the next big thing, causing several models to go out of stock. Now, manufacturers in China have confirmed they're starting to produce dedicated cryptocurrency mining SSDs to help handle the growing demand.

Developed by the founder of BitTorrent Bram Cohen, Chia sets itself apart from other cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin by relying much more heavily on having a fast SSD than a high-powered graphics card. From what we understand over on Chia's website, it's built around having lots of free space on your PC, and the high number of read and write operations it's expected to perform also favours SSDs with high endurance ratings.

You can't actually trade Chia just yet, but the HKEPC report states that SSDs and hard disk drives are already in short supply in Hong Kong, and many 4-18TB models have already gone out of stock. Prices have increased by an average of HK$200-HK$600 in just a few days, too, which for context works out to be around ÂŁ20-60 in the UK.

As SSD supplies continue to dry up, Chinese manufacturer Jiahe Jinwei have now announced they're starting to make a new suite of dedicated cryptocurrency mining SSDs to cope with the current demand. It looks like they'll be mainly targeted at Chia miners, so may miss the consumer retail market altogether, but the company have already warned that it could prompt a new rush on SSDs more generally as Chia becomes more popular. As such, we could be in for another great graphics card-sized shortage of our beloved SSDs soon, and prices for the best SSDs for gaming could start to rise all over the world as a result.

Sooooooooo is there a reason governments can't just ban mining and trading crypto on their soil? Sure, people will still do it, but at least you're doing more than Nothing as rich speculators with too much money spend it on speeding up the heat death of our planet, and maybe if enough of them do it and actually prosecute some rich fucks people will start taking a hint.

Even just something like the us feds banning businesses from accepting payment in crypto would probably make the whole pyramid scheme collapse and kill the value and motivation for mining and pushing it

The US is too obsessed with capitalism and has an entire faction of climate deniers, so there's no real impetus to do anything about it here.

Jesus, they're basically building a crypto currency on the tests they do to see how many read/ write cycles you can do on a SSD before the cells fail and become read only. What a fantastic idea to make crypto even more destructive.

Crypto is just part of the finance capitalism we're hyper spiraling in and governments seem happier to just let things keep escalating rather than risk rocking the boat and causing the first domino to fall

Kaplan leaving Blizzard right now makes no effing sense. Overwatch 2 is still in development, as are other major projects (well, financially major income-wise) like Diablo 2's remaster.

It is happening after Kotick gave himself more bonuses while also firing more staff after another year of growth for the company. This is 100% projection on my part but maybe Kaplan was like "hey what the fuck man" in his -10 charisma way.

I can’t forget that Kaplan’s original handle was Tigole Bitties and he kept the name Tigole when he moved to WoW development

Given how many high profile departures from Blizzard there have been, one would imagine the common point of friction would be whatever's left, so that's either the staff (unlikely) or the management (who are notorious assholes).

It really just sounds like already shaky barrier between Activision and Blizzard collapsed and everyone is bailing before Diablo and Overwatch get the Call of Duty treatment.

I agree on the genuine and earnest thing. But his excitement threshold was very, very low. Which is probably a good thing in a way because we at least didn't have to put up with overhyped enthusiasm from him.
