Yeah, he's clearly making the video for the "I want to skip to the reward" crowd. If I bother with these I'll probably just follow the video up until the puzzle is unlocked (since that part is ridiculously arcane and uninteresting).

I think that's likely. The dh release got a lot of attention and probably drive player interest especially for the casual crowd. Likewise quilboar might get people to play BGs who wouldn't have otherwise because there is a clear path to success or they want to experience what everyone's talking about.

It's metrics driven development. Numbers of bg players go up = success for the BG dev team.

BG hardcore players stay anyway or come back when the balance patch hits.

Had some great balance talks over the last few days. 5 nerfs, 10 buffs in next week’s patch. Looking to bring up some underperforming classes/archetypes, there’s some spicy stuff.

Dawson was also interviewed and gave some hints: https://bbs.nga.cn/read.php?tid=26652170 (article is in Chinese, Google translate in the spoiler)
    Constructed
Q: Regarding the issue of balance adjustment, let's start with the Crab Rider. Alec mentioned in a podcast program that the Crab Rider will appear more after the new version is released before the Barrens version. This seems to be the case now. Iksar mentioned in a Twitter Q&A some time ago that the crab knight is not strong enough to be weakened. This view is very interesting and has also caused a lot of discussion in the Chinese community. So what do you think is the specific situation of the crab knight?

Alec: Let's put it this way, this time we are going to weaken 5 cards, 2 of which are neutral cards, and one of them is likely to be a murloc...conclusion, think for yourself.

Q: Let's do it one by one. The next one is the cool spring water. The national server's view of this card is even more extreme. A large part of the reason is the performance of the spring water in the hand of the wild fire demon. Even if only considering standards, many professional players have mentioned spring water. Is spring water on the weakening list this time?

Alec: It can be said that the mage has a high popularity that does not match the winning rate, which means that players like to play spells. Previously, it was because the Fool's deck could be played early and the rhythm exploded, but the current strength of the spell is still within a certain range. Sometimes some decks are so popular because they are more interesting, not because the strength is really too high, and we will not deprive players of the joy of enjoying this deck.

Of course, the wild fire demon method you mentioned has gradually moved to the top of our watch list. We have observed, discussed, and made some decisions.

We do intend to make it weaker. After all, you can't accept the 5-mana draw out the library to kill you in an empty field. However, it may also be an extreme situation in a game, which is not completely representative, but we are indeed discussing this deck and may make some adjustments in the future.

Q: To make sure, you mentioned that the mage whose popularity and winning rate do not match is standard or wild?

Alec: For the standard mage, the standard mage win rate is actually not enough to support such a high degree of popularity.
    Pre-made Decks and Battlegrounds
Q: How does the preparation deck perform after it goes live? Considering the current balance adjustment frequency of Hearthstone, will the future balance adjustment be affected by this? What will the frequency of the future preparation deck launch?

Alec: The original intention of the preparation deck was to give new players a relatively simple way to obtain a powerful deck.

It’s true that Hearthstone’s patches are now more frequent than ever, but you should also be able to see that our current balance logic is no longer the same as before—unless a gameplay and mechanism cause a big problem, our current adjustments are more frequent. Most of them are numerically extensive but light adjustments, only adjusting some of their health or attack power. Such adjustments will not completely hack a certain deck to death.

For the preparation decks, such adjustments will not make a set of decks lose their playability. The core of the decks and most of the game experience are still there. This is also the result of the change in our balance strategy.
    Boarman's design and balance

Q: In Warcraft, the boarman is also an important role in the plot of the Barrens. The blood gem is regarded by them as the blood of the ancestor Agamagan, the god of the wild boar. Can you talk about the design process of the war chess boar man and the blood gem mechanism? How did you finalize this gameplay?

John: When deciding to be wild boars at the beginning, it was also considered that they had a close relationship with the plot of the Barrens. After determining the race, we began to carefully consider their settings.

As you said, the blood gem is the same thing that the wild boar people are very persistent and longing. It represents the blood of their ancestor Agamagan, the god of wild boars. This setting fits the story of the wild boar very well, so we chose The blood gem is a feature of the boar man. In terms of the game, we hope that the mechanism of the blood gem is as simple as possible, so we chose the direct +1/+1; and in the plot, the wild boar people’s obsession with blood gems is designed to be triggered when using blood gems. Kind of effect.

In this way, the design of the Boar Man’s mechanism is simple and flexible, and the blood gems can also interact with other genres. The design of the Boar God also reflects the gift of blood gems.

Q: Let’s talk about the strength of the boars. What do you think about the strength of the new race? Is there any adjustment plan you can reveal?

Alec: Yes, we held a meeting about the balance of the Boars just an hour ago, and discussed the content of the balance adjustment next week. It's not just war chess, but it also includes the adjustment of the construction mode.

Of course we are very happy that the Boars finally met with you in the tavern, because this new gameplay is really interesting, and we are very happy that everyone is willing to try new content.

As usual, every time a new race is released, everyone will be more excited and will actively try it, which will definitely bring some balance problems. These are all normal, but we will also go to balance, next week we will start to adjust, mainly in the numerical aspect, but at the same time will keep the Boarman game interesting.

Q: Is there anything I can reveal about the specific adjustments?

Alec: Generally speaking, the adjustment is focused on the mid-term combat power of the wild boars, which will slightly weaken the mid-term and even some late combat power of this race. But it will not adjust the key engines and gameplay mechanisms. As long as you gather these lineup components, you still take off. It's very strong and fun. We want to adjust the original values of some followers and the growth of some followers.

Q: Does War Chess have a strengthening plan for old races and heroes, such as demons? There was a wave of enhanced feedback in the national service before.

Alec: After getting the data of hero performance, the general team will not care about those heroes who perform well, but will look at those heroes who perform poorly, and where they can make it better, or even It needs some redoing.

We are currently redoing some of the heroes that have bottomed out, those heroes that you don't even want to take. Because when we provide players with 4 hero options, we hope that they feel that each option has a certain value, or a certain strength. At present, we really adjust and redo these heroes that no one wants to choose, so that they can return to the environment.

Regarding the demon you mentioned, you still need to wait until the environment has completely stabilized after the Boarman is released. A large number of balance adjustments of war chess are generally in the X.6 version, and the previous rules are generally the same. We have to wait for the environment of the game to stabilize before determining whether we need to adjust or strengthen certain races.

Q: The question of sequence and move that is often talked about in war chess is once again magnified by the blacksmith. What do you think of the blacksmith?

Alec: The original intention of joining the blacksmith is because the blacksmith is originally a new card in the new expansion. At the same time, the effect is more suitable for the gameplay of war chess, and there are rage keywords, so we think it is very suitable. In general, we think the blacksmith still has some positive effects . But now she does show a very extreme gap between the upper and lower limits. If you put her first, it will be very strong when the rage is triggered, but you will lose out again if she dies, so in the next patch we will start from Remove the blacksmith from the battle chess.

Q: Are the accessories for war chess being made?

Alec: Indeed, we have mentioned that we are designing accessories for war chess. We also hope that players can have more personalized options when playing war chess, but there is no official news to announce for the time being. Hopefully in the near future Announce some new content.

Q: Woking is the first hero with two directional skills in tavern chess. Compared with other heroes, it is more playable and more complicated. Will future hero designs be more complicated?

John: It's always good to have choices. The more diverse the hero designs, the more types of players can be covered. Complex heroes have complex gameplay. For example, we have dancer Darrell. It may be difficult for new players to get started, but in the hands of masters, his hat can make flowers. We also have simple heroes. Skills like Ysera clearly show you the idea of the game-just take the dragon, and new players can understand it well. We can do complex and simple heroes.

Q: Just mentioned the complexity, let's continue. As you said, the blood gem mechanism itself is very simple, but the overall gameplay of the wild boar race is still very difficult to operate, and the time is relatively tight. This is for people who are not fast or use mobile terminals. Very unfriendly to the players. What do you think of this change in gameplay, is it that players will gradually get used to it, or is the increase in complexity an inevitable trend?

Alec: The complexity will inevitably increase over time, but we will definitely limit it to a range. For example, we build so many expansion packages in the model, and the design also follows this method. The description of each card is still the most. The four lines are easier to read, and the interaction when typing is generally simple.

For the balance of war chess, we will definitely set an upper limit of complexity, but at the same time, we can find opportunities to slightly increase the upper limit of the current game complexity in the design of races such as wild boars. This is also what some players expect, the kind of refreshing feeling of getting a lot of blood gems and frantically operating the explosive power.

Some players like more complex gameplay, then he can try the wild boar; some players prefer simple and clear gameplay, and there are other races to choose from. The focus is to provide different players with their own favorite options, such as our team Some members think that this is his natural gameplay when they see the Boarman.

Q: In actual operation, the wild boar may have a hand full of gems. If you are empty at this time, you will not be able to perform any operations. Do you have any comment on this situation?

John: This is an extreme example, because it is difficult to see this situation when playing games normally. However, when designing the blood gem mechanism, we have considered the situation of the hand, and have made some specific restrictions on the minions that generate gems.

For example, the flag-bearing boar and Calgar both use gems directly on other minions. These effects could have put gems in your hand first, but in order to control the number of cards in the hand, we have adjusted the design.

Q: Why was the previous special gameplay of the Dark Moon prize cancelled? Is it possible that it will be reissued?

Alec: I can't say cancel it. Just like the expansion pack exit environment, different gameplays of war chess will be rotated, so that we can also have a better perspective to observe the evolution of war chess mode.

Will it return in the future? Of course it is possible, but there must be some changes. For example, how can this kind of gameplay appear more frequently? Is it appropriate to have a Dark Moon prize every four games? In other words, other methods and mechanisms are used to give the game some changes. How will these changes be displayed and notified to the players? The current idea is to let the Dark Moon prize return for a short time.

John: I think temporarily removing the Dark Moon prize gives us space to explore other similar but different activities in the future. These limited-time activities can bring freshness to the game of war, but they will not all add up to become a burden. For example, if a race is directly introduced, the learning cost of the player will be relatively high. Therefore, we sometimes add a race through the event and remove some races at the same time, so that the player only needs to master a part of the gameplay, and then wait until the next event to learn about the other Mechanisms, rather than stacking all the mechanisms together, making the overall learning cost too large.

Q: When will war chess remove the beta logo?

Alec: There are also some content and functions that we want to add to the war chess, so that the war chess can become a complete body. Of course, our current support for the war chess is the same as the expansion pack of the construction mode, which is constantly updated. Maybe after a few expansion packs, we will be able to see one of the best and truly complete tavern war chess.
    Puzzle Achievement
Q: After discovering the triggering method of the mysterious achievement in The Barrens, players squeezed out the practice mode from the bug. How are these four levels designed?

Alec: This puzzle-solving little egg is the work of our Chad Nervig (Celestalon) designer, because we have set aside a part of the time called "free your mind" in our work. You can try any ideas. I think this is his release. The fruits of self-time! And he has designed many puzzles for World of Warcraft before, and he must also want to add some such little flower heads to Hearthstone.

We have seen the results of the players. I think this is the power of the Internet. Any problem can be solved! But I think the most interesting thing is that players from all parts of the world get together because of the fact that the clues of the puzzle will be different due to the flavor description of each language version, and everyone has solved the problem together. The Hearthstone community is really very interesting. Awesome!

Q: So far, all the puzzles have been solved. Players reported that Hunter’s puzzles are more complicated. Is this puzzle solving speed within your expectations?

Alec: When everyone gathers together for the same goal, the question will definitely be answered soon, and we don't have a specific expectation, but the most exciting thing about this is that it brings everyone together. In addition, solving puzzles is a matter of time. If this group is large enough, the problem will definitely be solved quickly.

2 nerfs are confirmed to be neutrals, 1 of which is a murloc.

When specifically asked if Refreshing Spring Water was on the chopping block he said Mage isn't good enough in Standard to warrant a nerf. Fireworks/APM Mage in Wild will probably get hit in another way if they deem it necessary. (More people play Wild than Standard on China server, which is why they're clarifying the distinction and mentioning Wild at all)

Also a nerf of some kind to the midgame for Battlegrounds Quillboars and a mention of Battlegrounds cosmetics in the future.

So Crabrider and Mankrik/Alexstrasza as the other neutral?

If they hit Crabrider then they probably don't also hit Hand of A'dal, so maybe First Day of School and/or Hammer of the Naaru.
Hunter probably gets a minor hit in some way, something small like -1 health on Trampling Rhino.
If there's only one Paladin nerf then the 5th nerf is probably a Warrior card. Nothing in particular really sticks out though, maybe Sword Eater?
A bunch of people are thinking Tickatus, but if they're not hitting RSW then I seriously doubt they hit Tickatus under the same reasoning.

The buffs are a lot harder to place. Shaman most likely gets some adjustment to their murloc or spell damage archetypes, Druid to their taunt archetype, Warlock to the self-mill archetype, and DH just in general. Which cards specifically they'll go with seems impossible to say.

So Crabrider and Mankrik/Alexstrasza as the other neutral?
Of the two I feel like Mankrik is the more generally broken and unfair card. The high roll instant blowout potential of turn 2/3 Mankrik into drawing the wife a turn or two later is just stupid. Even if it statistically doesn't happen regularly, the games where it does are just miserable for one player.

As far as I'm aware, Alex only really feels broken in a couple decks right now. It's stupid in Rogue due to Octo, Tenwu, and Wicked Stabs enabling fun and interactive 22+ damage out of nowhere turns, but if that deck is too good, there are other ways to nerf it besides hitting Alex. And then it's "broken" in Rush Warrior since it allows the deck to cheat out wins even after if the opponent has stabilized, cleared the Warrior's board, and got taunts up.

That said, Alex might be constraining design space for the rest of the card sets to be released this year since it is just "here's a neutral mini Pyroblast that any deck can potentially run until April 2022."

If I had to come up with a long shot third option for the other neutral nerf, I'd say maybe. He can curvestone out some ridiculous pressure on turn 5 or turn games around. But the fact that his golems aren't consistent, he's a better "skill testing" card than the other 2, and he comes with a deck restriction make that pretty unlikely. He's definitely up in the running for "best neutrals" right now though.

I agree with your take on the class nerfs. With Paladin, I've been expecting First Day of School to go to 1 mana for a while, and nerfing Crabrider implicitly weakens Hand of A'dal (and Rush Warrior), so maybe it evades the nerf bat.

Control Warlock is garbage right now, so nerfing Tickatus seems premature unless they really think the nerfs/other class buffs will position Warlock in a place where Tickatus does more than sit in your hand or destroy 5 cards as you die on the following turn.

I peeked at the puzzles in the article. The maze and bartering ones look awful and absurdly tedious and like the sort of thing that is zero fun to actually try to solve. At least the quilboar/orc thing is a reasonably engaging puzzle (I didn't really look at the other one since it didn't have a million steps and seemed like another one I might try to solve myself).

The orc/quilboar puzzle is a standard logic puzzle, often presented as crossing a river with wolves/sheep
The numbers puzzle is also a logic puzzle but the end solution doesn't make sense to me
The maze puzzle is tedious but is pretty obvious once you map out the maze. Can be solved programmatically
The barter puzzle is basically a long winded math problem

I don't fault them for making puzzles tedious. Its pretty much required especially when you have a dedicated, global community looking to solve Blizzard's secrets in WoW or Hearthstone.

I think the orc/quilboar is fine. I haven't really looked at the numbers one for much the same reason forty had.

For the latter two I feel like they should just be half as big/long. After you have groked the principle it's just tedious to actually repeat all the necessary steps. The community argument doesn't really hold water to me because everything was still solved in a day basically. If anything having a sensible problem size might encourage people to try their own hand at solving. If I see that the solution has 70 steps I won't bother, I'll either ignore it or just follow the instructions.

I did have the same problem with some of the older puzzle boards (what were they called?) which is why I stopped doing them. So maybe it's just not for me, which is of course fine. If people are having fun with this, then more power to them.

All that ridiculous effort for just like A Card Back seems not worth the effort though

I dunno, getting a card back for something that's hard to figure out seems worthwhile to me. Especially when other people cannot be bothered that much repeating the steps.

I’m not much of a BG player, but I’ve been hitting them hard since the patch. It’s convenient to know exactly what to do to win with no skill involved when I’m trying to knock out the win achievement with each hero.

Among others, I finally knocked out the win for A.F. Kay and her brb achievement.

Yknow what fucking boggles my mind though, like, holy shit the Quillboars have really fucking good stats even just baseline. Like are you fucking shitting me with Tough Tusk being a goddamn T2 4/3 baseline? All it takes is one fucking Blood Gem for it to become a 5/4 with Divine Shield; ON TIER TWO. Get the fucking 2/5 from T3 and two Tough Tusks and you literally just run away with the lobby.

Not to mention Charlga fucking buffing herself as well, like come on. That plus the ridiculous synergy of Agamaggan and shit. NOT TO MENTION Quillboars are the ONLY TRIBE that can literally find a new minion and just have it vacuum up all the stats from the minion you wanna replace. Like say you find Bristleback Knight later on in the game cause you just never ran into one, oops Necrolyte exists enjoy that instant 60/70 Divine Shield/Windfury minion you just got (with a Divine Shield refresh, of all things, my god.)

Blood Gems just throw scaling out of proportion like super hard. And it's mind boggling to think that they not only included a fucking 4/3 in T2, but a 4/3 that can grow EASILY and gain Divine Shield? It's like they made Quillboars and designed the cards and set the stats without considering the ramifications of Blood Gem scaling at all. They scale harder and faster than any other Tribe in the game. I've been seeing people doing early greed leveling to 3 like right away so they can get the good shit rolling. They lose a small amount of health and then they just steamroll everyone cause they get first picks at Quillboars.

Why is Charlga a fucking 7/7. Why is Bannerboar a 2/5 (Iron Sensei is a 2/2). Why is Tough Tusk a 4/3. WHY DOES BRISTLEBACK BRUTE SCALE AS INSANELY AS IT DOES. IT'S REALLY NOT HARD TO PUMP THAT TO A 20/20 LIKE SUPER EARLY ON.

edit: Basically Blood Gems are a completely flawed mechanic because they mess with the overall stat economy really fucking hard. Everything's at a baseline for a reason. There's a reason you have to buy +2/+2 buff minions to slap some pants on your cards. There's a reason why those buff cards are literally just buy+sell instantly because they're not worth keeping around. Quillboars get to keep those buffer minions because they selfscale or you can just slap Blood Gems on them.

Like you look at average statlines, right, and T2 minions are like... 3/3, 3/2, 2/3, 2/4.... T2 is one of those tiers where not everything trades cleanly yet so you have a lot of things still surviving with like 1 HP or something. Health thresholds, these are super important, because there's a certain expectation of like "Okay, average damage a minion can deal is like 3 right now, a 4 health taunt will most likely survive two hits at this point in time. And then come Blood Gems to completely shit all over that. And there's just too many ways to get them, they're really easy to generate, there's self-generating ones, there's ones that scale by slapping them on other minions.... They're too fucking efficient, their stats are too good, the scaling and health thresholds get completely thrown out the window. Tavern Tiers have gone from predictable to completely unpredictable. You could legit run up against someone with two goddamn 5/4s with Divine Shield on Turn 5 if they're lucky enough.

They thought that it would be balanced because you can put blood gems on non-quillboars : )

I think that they seriously underestimated the degree to which Quillboars go beyond synergistic and are straight up parasitic. I mean, you could drop Bonker or Bristleback Knight or Charlga into a menagerie build, or as a one-off in just about anything. But realistically? You want to feed those gems into a Groundshaker or a Tough Tusk and make a Dynamic Duo grow huge. And Aggem Thorncurse is straight up bad - you need another Quillboar feeding her gems, which reduces her utility in a menagerie build significantly.

Aggem is such a strange design decision because it's like in a Menagerie build you'd, literally just take Bristleback or Charlga or anything else instead.... Like, why... that one....

I liked the Boom Labs puzzles since they mostly just required analysis and understanding Hearthstone mechanics.

After playing "modern" amazing puzzle games like Portal, Braid, etc., puzzles based chiefly on long, tedious trial-and-error time wasting (the maze and trade marathon) just feel like 30 year old relics of early game design that the best of the industry has moved past.

It's painfully obvious that quillboars are a minion type designed exclusively for battlegrounds

The other types have weird/bad cards because they are from like regular ass Hearthstone

I find it amusing as now people race to 4 and 5 and then win as they get the OP Quillboars and no one can then stop them.

Apparently handbuff is op, but I don't think I've seen more than one or two this month. If everyone flocks to it and abandons APM Mage now that this is published then continuing to play Big Priest is probably solid.

Quillboars or bust, no other comp works right now

By far the worst BG meta in a long time. How they managed to learn nothing from Elementals is inconceivable.
