Evil Within 2 is exactly like Resident Evil 4 in that the first two thirds are a bunch of fun and focus on a compelling villain and then the last third sucks a ton
I think EW2 might be even worse than the Resident Evil games in that regard, because part of the reason the first two thirds are fun is the open world stuff and the back half is just wall to wall corridors

Aw, I actually like the back third of EW2!
Less for the gameplay (which does get corridor-y, yeah), more for managing to have emotional beats that actually worked on me. A huge rarity in horror games.

Yeah, the emotional beats didn't really hit for me. Or rather, I think that the emotional beats of the small story that was being told in the first two thirds worked better for me.
EW2 Spoilers
Like, grieving father discovers his daughter is still alive but is trapped in the matrix by an art murderer, that's great.
But when you add in that also his wife is there and she's a monster sort of now too it just started feeling over convoluted and bloated. Plus the priest figure who just feels kind of rote evil for the sake of being evil and something I've seen a hundred times before.
Like, you had a good small story! Just tell that one, it's a fun time!
Here's my beef with how patrick klepek talks about psychobreak. He says it's like if shinji mikami made resident evil 4 again in 2014 but resident evil 4 whips ass and is amazing to play in 2021.
Are you sure that was a qualitative statement and not just Patrick talking about design styles?
I'm not sure how similar the design styles can be if psychobreak is apparently intolerable to play and resident evil 4 is one of the best video games
Similar? I was suggesting Patrick was referring to how design styles have changed in the last seven years that Evil Within 2 has not picked up on.
Oh i see, patrick suggested that mikami had made re4 again without modernizing the design to say that psychobreak feels outdated

That's how I took it at least. I could be wrong, of coursem
I will say after beating 8 and then 7 in the last couple weeks I went back and started 4 and the aiming doesn’t feel good in a way that might prevent me from replaying it and kind of makes me feel like a more modern RE4make would be ok!

If they do. 4 REmake then they really need to ax the sections where you have to protect Ashley. Bullshit escort missions have mostly gone the way of the Dodo.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
hard disagree. ashley is the most fun an escort mission has ever been, the parts where she's around are a nice change of pace, and more modern tech opens up more interesting possibilities for those moments when the two of you have to work together
conspiracy theories are viewpoint reinforcing ego boosts. you know the ***truth*** and all those sheeple out there don't
it's not surprise they are very addicting
I think that's true for some/many people, yeah
But conspiracy theories for a lot of other people are a way of seeing order in chaos and happenstance. Uncertainty is scary for a lot of folks, and something that says, "There IS a pattern, you don't need to be scared of the unknown any more" is very appealing.
For some folks, tragedy on a wide-enough scale short-circuits their brain. It's easier to believe in a cabal of all-powerful bad guys than to believe that tragedy is unpredictable, that it can just happen, that life is more fragile and unpredictable than they realized.
For some folks they go deep into a conspiracy hole, don't trust the banks to hold their gold, hide it in the roof, and then lose it all when a once in a lifetime tornado destroys their roof specifically.
Wait
Didn't you lose your house roof in a tornado...?
I believe he is accurately describing what happened to his then-roommate.
Yuuuuuuup
lmao
who puts their gold in the attic?
1) gold is mad heavy
2) you bury treasure ya dingus
That's the thing, everybody knows you bury treasure. So while metal-detecting raider gangs are digging up the sad coffee can full of dimes you buried in your back yard, my krugerrands will be safe and sound tarred to the roof under my shingles.

One of my problems with most games with guns is that the aiming doesn't feel as good as RE4's, so I think this might be a personal preference thing

Ashley sections are fine, working with her is fine. Having to protect her instead of her helping you a la Atreus I am less fine with.

also like 90% of the time you just stuff her in a dumpster until the area is clear
the only times she's a hassle is when the level is designed around her being a hassle, like the crank room

i dunno, RE5 plays very similarly to RE4 and yet it sucks shit

Racist as hell though
obviously ymmv but i played through it co op with a friend a couple years ago and past like, the first couple areas it was pretty dull
Having played RE4 recently it still feels basically perfect. An update feels completely unnecessary.
Maybe I need to change a setting or something. it’s hard for me to describe what felt off about it without putting my hands on it right now but it just didn’t feel right.

Yeah I could never vibe with RE4's gameplay, somehow too stiff and too squirrely at the same time

RE4 still used tank controls and you had specific limitations (no movement while aiming, no strafing) that makes it feel stiffer and more restrictive than more modern third person shooters. Yeah, the game was built around that and all, but tuning it something more like the recent remakes could make it feel smoother and more intuitive.

RE4 does have the best video game character in history.

As a counterpoint I also played through 5 again with a bud and still had a blast. The gunplay is just so satisfying if it clicks with you

Yeah, the raw moment-to-moment gameplay is even better than RE4, especially on PC. The breadth of melee options and how they differ between characters makes Mercenaries a joy that I've put like a hundred hours into alone
the evil within 2 is maybe the only game that has ever scared me. i still think about it to this day.
so you know that ghost lady who stalks you and shows up in random story events and spots on the map? the unkillable one with the spinechilling screech? that fucking ghost lady?
okay, so i had beaten the game a first time, and never once encountered her on the map. didn't know that could happen. thought she was confined to those story segments.
i am strutting through new game+ feeling like a stud because i know where everything is, and i want to 100% this run. i got all my bennies from the playthrough before.
then, out of fucking nowhere in the middle of the map i hear "sebastiaaaaaan" and i lose. my goddamn. mind.
all my confidence evaporates as i start booking it as far away as possible
never had a thrill like that in any other game before or since.
