I only know they exist because people here mention them a lot. They have a podcast about videogames or something? Idk. I've never heard anyone outside this forum mention them.

they actually very pointedly didn't have a video game podcast for a long time, other than the Besties, which now has such a small audience that they can't even get ad buys for it.

I am pretty much always willing to defend long video essays being necessary in their length, but Sarah Z has been really bad about editing her videos down for a bit. Between extreme redundancy (was I insane, or did she just do two versions of the same opening statement?), disclaimers about points longer than the points themselves, and kind of indulgent transition editing (why have VHS style transition imagery), and just generally uninteresting subject matter, this feels like what people mean when they say youtubers are too long-winded for no reason

Sarah goes overboard on disclaimers because the subjects of the videos get VERY upset. Case in point, someone tried to go after her hardcore about the Homestuck one. I feel like a bit of redundancy is worth it for the countering of bad faith attacks.

I tend to watch youtube folks by putting them on in the background, so if they were all 11 hours long I would be pleased.

Disclaimers do not help against bad faith interpretations of a work, though. Homestuck aptly demonstrates this, with people preemptively gearing up to claim it was harassment and a hitpiece before it was released.

It is useful to have disclaimers if it might genuinely explain her point or counter an obvious response, but a lot of times it feels like the disclaimers are solely written for a hypothetical person who would simultaneously assume a wildly uncharitable position but would also believe her disclaimer if given.

I think a lot of those sorts of responses aren't deliberate bad faith, but coming from a knee-jerk emotional response, and I think disclaimers do help with those. Like, this is the pinned comment:

How often disclaimers work and whether that's enough to be worth the effort are questions I can't answer, but they definitely work some of the time.

They already stopped being shit, it's called induction, they said it in the video.

Also when is the last time you used an electric stove. I cook on one every goddamn day and I promise it has not effected my cooking at all.

My sister in law has one that myself and my wife have cooked on and I do not like it.

Sorry planet but saving you isn't worth my cooking convenience.

I am all for the no gas on new buildings law though, because I think it will push electric stove tech further. Also the opposition to it I've seen on local news os obviously gas company shills and misinformation so fuck them.

I've been stuck on various electric ranges since I was 13. Some have been pretty awful, but the newer ones work fine and the induction range my parents have since their kitchen remodel is very nice. The only time I truly wish I had a gas burner is with my wok.

The wok situation is a bummer I'll admit.

I have never been closer to a gas range than patronising a restaurant I would always expect it to explode and shoot flames all over me or kill me in my sleep like a cat

I remember when I was over to someone's house when I was a kid and their older sister was lighting cigarettes with the gas range as she would fire up a burner light the end while it was in her mouth and turn it off while taking a drag

My parents have always used a big chonky propane burner in the patio for wok shit (or basically any frying since my mom doesn't like the smoke and grime indoors anyway, so win-win). Decent enough compromise.

Ooh, that's a really good idea. I always try to minimize frying smoke and stuff but there's only so much you can do particularly when you have crappy apartment oven hoods. I hadn't considered the smart move was to just give up and cook outdoors!

Yeah, I haven't done this myself mostly because the apt is real uppity about open flames (like, I have a gas grill, but they only allow small campfire canisters so it's mostly there to be useless), but I've definitely considered at least a single inductive burner so at least I can do some frying without turning the entire apartment into a scene from Backdraft.

Where is the electricity coming from?

Unless you're over 50% solar, chances are natural gas is still greener than running current through your house to power an induction burner.

    It doesn't matter?

An electrical grid is an infinitely more efficient use of burning gas and easier to make green than burning open gas in your home.
