Seriously folks get Wildermyth. Wildermyth is a game with procedurally generated stories that made me tear up slightly as I decided that a character should probably die to complete their arc now.

They managed to take the bit people love talking about with things like XCOM where folks dying matters a bunch and you were torn up about it, but instead of making it solely a terrible thing you usually save-scum to avoid, it's often just part of how you interact with the stories and the tactical map.

Take a moment to donate what you can to Critical Resistance and Black Lives Matter.

I wish I could get into WilderMyth as much as everyone else is. I liked the demo I played a couple PAXes ago so I bought it in EA. I think I got maybe 3 chapters into the first campaign and put it down. Tried again a few months ago and only completed 1.

I think maybe it's procedurally generated stories? I guess I prefer a more crafted experience for narrative and leave the procedural stuff to the mechanical part.

As much as I love Austin Walker and hearing him talk about the emergent stories he finds in games, this is making me think the game might not be for me.

I just can't seem to get into a bunch of the procedural storytelling that he loves. I enjoy hearing about other people's experiences with them, but for whatever reason I have a hard time sticking with games that don't have a bespoke story or experience they want to show me.

Except for Civ. I'll 'just one more turn' until I drop dead of exhaustion in those games.

does the item world in the first Disgaea ever get more enemy variety? Right now it's just humanoids and what I'd call tier 1 monsters.

That's what I'm saying, actually. I normally can't jive with that. But here, they give characters actual dialogue, there are actual discrete story arcs that are authored, but you have a hand in the tone and relationships between characters.

It's this really smart thing where the plot, the text, is authored. But the subtext, the ways characters connect to each other emotionally, that's guided by the player.

The game lays out who the baddies are, constructs scenarios around that. Gives the villains their moves and motivations, makes the big changes to the world. But the smaller stuff - Are your mage and your warrior friends? Lovers? Rivals? That's chosen by the player.

For me, it's the perfect sweet spot between totally guided and totally freeform. It feels like I'm making a story with the game instead of for the game. It's a real neat trick.

Yeah I feel like Wildermyth is... sort of a more substantial evolution of the Nemesis system?

It's what Bioware RPGs have needed for ages, a relationship system that allows players to have more history with characters and the world, while also allowing for more freedom in how those relationships are defined.

I would also give Wildermyth a recommendation. Sometimes a campaign will give you more character customization and team dynamics options than another will, but after a campaign or two you can really put your mark on your characters. It also helps that the combat is actually pretty fun.

I did like the combat. The possessing objects on the map was neat. There were just aspects of the randomly generated story events for the main characters that rubbed me the wrong way because it was going against what I'd chosen for them.

Speaking of games with vague half assed narratives, the Legend Of Mana remaster is out today and I'll probably get it because I'm weak and a sellout. Here's to continuing my love/hate relationship with it.

The magic system is SO cool, my goodness.

Took me a couple of missions to wrap my head around it, but "The environment is your power" is such a brilliant hook. Your hunter is behind a half-wall of cover, protecting them from that ranged enemy. Your mage can hurl that wall at the enemy. If it hits, hooray, everyone wins! If it misses, well, your hunter is fully exposed.

Those sorts of dilemmas are so, so neat, and the magic system sets them up effortlessly.

I'm liking Wildermyth a lot and have played two full campaigns so far. My hope is they continue to support it enough to drop in another big chunk of random events. The way it all connects together is cool, but I have hit a few repeats at this point. But the game does also let you make some choices with those and it lets you try out the other options.

I was so disappointed that Legend of Mana wasn't just more Secret of Mana, and was instead... whatever the fuck it is. It's gorgeous and the soundtrack is amazing, but it didn't feel like anything actually happened in the game. And it had systems that you never even had to touch, like crafting.

I'll probably still pick up the remaster because I'm a consumer whore

Does the Epic version of Sonic Mania include the Plus DLC or is that an additional purchase? Great game either way, just curious.

They appear to be selling the DLC separately.

    From the Windows 11 presentation

"If you're a gamer, Windows 11 is made for you"

    - Auto-HDR support coming
    - DirectStorage support coming (fast I/O system)
    - Xbox app is built into Win11 (includes xCloud)

there are all good, direct storage is going to be very interesting from a pipeline perspective

Hopefully the HDR support will be better than Win10. I can't turn it on without everything looking washed out. Thankfully most PC games with HDR will let you enable it within the game and not have to mess with Window's garbage.

-edit: DirectStorage is also really cool.

I would assume so. But for x amount of time?

They did not say during their stream. No mention of launch date or cost.

Apparently not only are android apps going to be available on Win11, but they'll be able to use their own monetization services with Microsoft not taking any cut at all.

That feels like it was specifically designed to be a giant middle finger to Apple with the lawsuit between them and Epic right now.

Judging by past Windows releases, 11 will be a strictly worse version of 10.

7 and 10 were excellent though

8 wasn't bad, just didn't really need to exist

    Yeah that's my point!

    XP, good
    Vista, bad
    7, good
    8, bad
    10, good
11 is in line to be bad

Windows 9 was the best. It had everything I could ever want in an OS. Shame it caused a Timeline Incursion and that year had to be quarantined but Windows 10 isn't too bad either

Oh speaking of the xbox app being installed by default, my computer has started opening the xbox app within 5-10 minutes of starting XCOM2, like if I'd hit the home button on my controller, but n't controller isn't even on. Seems to only happen once per reboot.
    Anybody seen something like that?

Remember having to load Windows from MS dos shell? That was fun. I only needed it for like one or two games, everything else just ran from dos.
