A little character design I did using some new stuff I learned.
For not using any reference I feel like it's pretty solid? Like, not perfect but just building up shapes and then using whatever bits of anatomy knowledge I've got to create a character I think it's decent enough. The big problem for me is the face. Face hard. My goal here is to actually really simplify my style. I'd like to be flexible, like being able to do a more mainstream, realistic comics style (like here, I guess) and also a more stylized and simplified version. Like what you might see in anime or animation, while not being anime. I want to get good enough to have realistically proportioned characters without spending too much time on them like I did here. I've thought about starting a general character development and design thread but as little as I get to really sit down and draw these days I don't know if it would be worth it to start a new thread.
Nice! I love the design of the robo mechanic. Almost reminds me of the Ghibli designs from Castle in the Sky, in tone more than looks if that makes sense? Gentle and servile.
Edit: this is one of my warm up explorations that turned out pretty neat.

Uhhh!! I love this! The creatures face reminds me a bit of Hellboy. Love the color palette and the brush you used, really great work.
Thanks! I can totally see the Hellboy similarity.
This is part of a warm up where I choose a color or two and just throw paint onto canvas until I see something, then that becomes the subject. Real good way to loosen up.
God that bridge is the worst. It should not be 6 lanes, at the very least.
Edit: Now with another fun warm up.
Today I tried the old-but-useful "dark foreground - light mid-ground - dark background - light far background" composition. I can see why it's used a lot. Very effective with alternative contrasts.
Wow so much energy in this! I am loving the gesture, you can feel the story of the pose so powerfully. The design of the arm anatomy is lovely as well. Good job

The sketchy pen-and ink style is so animated and alive, and I love the character designs and composition.
More stuff. In a varation on the same theme:
Edit: changed the second picture to a less crap version.

Not double posting, just adding more.
Unfinished but liked this sketch.

This guy succeeded on a deception check against his friend. That little lie almost got some poor medical droid killed.
Added a second one to this post.
I think I made a Warcraft by accident.
I, uh. Listen. A study went a bit sideways, and the only way to excise it from my brain is by posting it. Or so it tells me.
