An Incomplete [History] of History Threads

MayabirdMayabird Pecking at the keyboardRegistered User regular
One of the more popular threads of the Penny Arcade forums over the past several years have been the History threads, wherein posters discuss historical anecdotes and stories, usually because it was freaking cool.

Four of the last six major history threads have titles involving something being cool which had suddenly switched in the most recent iterations possibly because [mutters gloomy utterings about the current day].

These of course are not an all-inclusive list, as there have been threads about specific topics in history that did not reach 100 pages, such as the Art History thread:

Anywho, new History Thread!

Was watching History Matters' vid on the Treaty of Trianon and it got me thinking how the romantic ideals of nationalism and accompanying self-determination really break down when applied to reality. Just like Schleswig Holstein.

Today was the 410th anniversary of Henry Hudson his son and 7 others being cast adrift after a mutiny
I wondered how it was known that he was cast aside in the bay named after him as the mutineers sailed back to Ireland one of the navigators blamed two of the recent dead {one died in the crossing the other of starvation} as the leaders in the uprising because upon returning they would have been tired for piracy

But another interesting note is the company that Hudson worked for East India company in looking for the northwest passage in the early 1600's
Just the lack of sea ice lately has made that passage unnavgatable and how cargo ships of today are too large to use many ports on the west coast

Consolatio peccatorum, seu Processus Luciferi contra Jesum Christum is a tract written by Jacobus de Teramo in around 1382. This "consolation of sinners" (with the colophon Liber Bellial) is a lawsuit between Lucifer and Jesus Christ, Solomon presiding, in which the Devil is suing Christ for having trespassed by descending into Hell.
    Belial.jpg
At the first trial Moses is counsel for Jesus Christ and Belial for the Devil. At the second trial the Patriarch Joseph is judge, Aristotle and Isaiah defend Jesus Christ, and the Emperor Augustus and Jeremiah defend the Devil. In both trials the decision is in favor of Christ, but at the second trial the Devil is granted the right to take possession of the bodies and souls of the damned at the Last Judgment.

Sounds like a corker of a trial they ought to do a netflix adaptation or somethin

Is Jesus Historical? What Do The Romans Say About Him? 28:52
    https://youtu.be/A41Tm5FDKns
On this video we will have a deep historical research into the most important mentions in Latin about Jesus of Nazareth by non Christian authors such as Roman emperors, magistrates, lawyers, military officers etc. We will discuss the validity of such testimonies, and try to understand if Jesus of Nazareth really is a historical figure or if his existence was just a myth.

Man, having a whole 5% of our history still on hand would be awesome.

That said, the reading-between-the-lines speculation or reconstruction based on the stuff we do have is its own kind of brain candy..

It's all kinds of fun, especially combined with the "why are we still talking about something that happened a hundred years ago?" talking point in the context of a genocide program that only formally ended in the late nineties.

I don't think Newfoundland is particularly noteworthy in its racism compared to... all the rest of Canada? Like, Quebec is the province that's been straight up legislating racism in the guise of "secularism", banning the wear of religious symbols by civil servants and trying to pretend real hard that it isn't about banning people whose religion asks them to wear particular clothing from civil service. Meanwhile every damn part of the country is racist as hell against indigenous people.
