I think getting your hopes up/down about the Steam Deck taking off to such an extent that developers specifically target it for performance is pretty premature.

Yeah, there's no way it'll take off that well. Just from the fact they can't possibly make enough to pull that off.

Doing an experimental playthrough of Pillars of Eternity 1 on the side where I run it as a good guy.

I don't know how people stand this. Five hours in and I haven't eaten a single baby.

    I'm going through withdrawal.

Boo, give us a sequel to Quantum Break.

I was mildly surprised how much Control reminded me of Quantum Break, but replacing Remedy's soap-opera humor with "OOOH SPOOKY INTERNET COPY PASTAAAA", which didn't strike me as doing any favors. I remember even less of Control's "story" than I do of QB, and all of it is exclusively "Close up of character's face." It's entirely possible she imagined the whole thing, which I guess is the point.

Remedy's games since Alan Wake rely pretty heavily on enjoying the setting to get the most out of them. I loved the SCP-esque setting of Control (plus the dumb Force Unleashed fun of just throwing random stuff at enemies, even if that was 80% of the game's combat in most situations) to the point I wasn't even disappointed about what past as the final "boss" of the base game; I was so invested in the story that the narrative climax from
the fake credits and dream bits afterwards
was enough for me to wall away from it satisfied.

The faux-Star Wars powers are definitely a highlight of the game, though in my own (probably very unique) experience part of that came from the fact that the "Service Weapon"--feels kind of underpowered (short of lucking out on upgrades, which is either a neat venue for loot mechanics or kind of tedious boring, depending on how you come at it) compared to big, punchy guns that you get in Remedy's other fare. You need to have good powers--well, mostly "launch shit at people"--because the gun's forms are all kind of limited.

(Of course, if you think the service weapon is amazingly awesome, all of this is moot.)

It's probably because I don't follow the whole "SCP" thing that the plot is completely unforgettable (versus the soap-opera-betrayal-time-travel of Quantum Break), since each article of internet creepy pasta lore, taken by itself is...just dumb (to the uninformed like me). And then we get to spend a minute zoomed in on Jessie's face as she ponders said dumb thing, then shares some of her ponderances out loud. It's all much more forgettable versus the gameplay, even by Remedy's standards, but I completely understand that only being my take (as someone who played the game on console and got so bored that they quit before the "final boss" encounter, and is now replaying it on Game Pass on PC).

I'm also not a fan of the death-penalty system, since it's never not annoying to be traveling down a corridor, have three guys with grenade launchers spawn behind you, kill you, then you just respawn with a chunk of your money gone. But I'm a not really a huge fan of the currency and loot-collection arc as applied here (it's kind of a weaker implementation of a loot shooter), to which it's an intrinsic quality. I'd prefer just to respawn at a checkpoint, but I understand why you don't.

All of this is completely subjective, like any other opinion. Taken that, it's not surprising I finished QB and replayed certain levels to get the other plot paths and collectibles, but couldn't be bothered for Control (though I am replaying it now, or at least I was).

I mean, part of the point of the setting is that this stuff is very, very dumb, but it's also very, very deadly.

But I super liked Control, so...

Control was amazing; until the ending which almost made me wish i'd never played it; but up until that final 5 minutes good times.

Control is very good. The combat is very glass cannony, you have to have a good sense of when to press hard, get a kill, and then run for cover.

It's a very creepy game, unsettling, if not openly scary. The ambiance is great throughout.

I may have mentioned, but it also has the best "final exam" levels, the maze, I've played in years, with one of the best soundtracks.

Control is disappointing. It does have its moments, usually after you acquire a new power or see one of the FMV sequences that mix the banal with the weird, which is why it's disappointing instead of just bad. As great as the in-game lore is, the writing for the actual plot and characters is lacking. The combat becomes really repetitive against uninteresting enemies and I can't really put my finger on when it happened.

You have it in your library so you might as well try and feel free to drop it when you stop having fun with it. The first parts of the game are pretty enjoyable, it just isn't able to sustain that.

Control was not fun (the combat was god-awful) but it was interesting.

To be fair I played with the gameplay settings that recharged my superpowers energy and gun energy back to full in 0.5 seconds so I got to spend all of combat being a flying Jedi whipping furniture and laser blasts around at will.

Control was only disappointing in the degree that it had been hyped up so much before I played it. It's solid. I love the world and the action was decent. The enemy was got boring but some of the characters and a lot of the ideas were fantastic.

I was straight up so bad at the combat that I never made it out of the first encounter.

Same here-ish I played on hard difficulty iirc and didn’t customize anything but; I think that’s a source of conflicting opinions; if you maxed throw and
levitate first which I did as well the entire game was just olol floating around insta killing everyone in hilarious ways; if you decided to concentrate on defensive skills and use guns for offence… you poor bastard

I generally liked Control, but the protagonist has a striking resemblance to Cal Kestis which once I noticed that it was really distracting particularly since it's ostensibly a game about being as Jedi as possible.

If the steam deck is a big enough success we may see it as a de facto standard for games hardware requirements.

If you know there are a few million people out there that have exactly spec X+Y+Z, it makes sense to target that in your optimization. Which could in turn lead to people making midtier prebuilds/laptops to make sure they clear the steam deck limit, reinforcing the cycle.

I do wonder how proton is going to work with many DRMd games though, unless they are testing everything on custom windows installs. Which is a hidden cost, a windows license is not free, and more expensive for a consumer than for a device manufacturer, but I doubt that Gabe is ever going to make a deal with MS on that....

At the very least, Valve's propensity to crowdsource everything could lead to having performance profiles you select from a menu, much like the steam controls you'd probably be fiddling with anyway

    So let’s try this again.

I have a load of stuff on my backlog I haven’t touched in years, and I suppose I ought to at least give everything I own at least a good solid look to decide if it still deserves a place on my hard drive and my time.

    441) Star Wars: The Old Republic – Finish Current Class
    442) TERA – Finish Current Class

…and I’m heading over to wheelofnames.com to slap them all into a wheel format to help me figure out what to play next. I figure if I get anything else, I’ll just tack it on to the end of the list.

So, with no further ado, well… let’s see where we’re starting this journey off from:

    375) I wanna be The Cat

…apparently we start with a cat game- and a re-skin of another popular indie game, “I Wanna Be The Guy”- real twitch-based pixel-perfect gameplay. I’ve actually played IWBTG, and I’m just absolutely no good at it, and I haven’t been all that good at stuff like that. So I figure I’ll just kick it over and maybe leave it uninstalled for now- not that I don’t want to try it, but that it just doesn’t feel like something I’d have a great time playing.

So… let’s take a look and see what else comes up…

Huh, a VN? Always up for one of those!

I just use WheelHaus instead of manually putting in the names

Also Control was okay. I wanted to like it more than I did, and if I ever go back to play the DLC, I'll probably turn on all the assists that make the game more fun

    Control lore spoilers
The Oldest House is living in my head rent free. It's just carved out a niche and become it's own object of power, nestled in there, ready to connect to literally anything.

I sucked up that games world like a sponge.

It also let me throw people at people, gave me a shotgun that vaporises anything that gets close, let me fly, and gave me a rocket launcher i can spam while flying, turning me into a demented apache.

I'm not sure it's possible for someone with my personality, my likes and interests, to have ever disliked Control.

Control was not fun (the combat was god-awful) but it was interesting.

Curious why you think the combat was bad? It doesn't seem like anything super special, but I'm enjoying it. And using telekinesis to throw random objects is fun.

Because I did not enjoy it even a little bit. Box throwing simulator that just wasn't fun.

Man Icewind dale has such a jump in quality once you get to severed hand. Its like the opposite of most Black Isle/Obsidian games that put the unfinished/bad stuff at the end. Shitty boring undead dungeon, shitty boring kitchen sink lizardman/yuan ti dungeon, snake boob lady boss… Great now that you are done with that have 2 of the best dungeons in any infinity engine game.

What was the name of that one online storefront that tried letting customers sell their digital games/licenses back to the store after they finished them at a reduced price?

Blimey, now you're asking. I vaguely remember that from the mists of time but I can't recall the name.
