BLUEPRINTS GOOOOOOO!
Patch just dropped, blueprints are in the research tree now. Honestly kinda surprised, a blueprint can have six hundred facilities at level three. Level four let's you have three thousand facilities.
EDIT: Oh shit, this blueprint tool is nice. It looks like it saves the blueprints external to the game, so once you make a blueprint you can use it anywhere. And the facility selection tool is super-easy. This is fantastic!

Does it let you stamp down a blueprint that extends beyond your normal build range? The fantastic MultiBuild blueprinting mod from several months ago let you do that, so it worked even for those super long chem plant lines that wrap around the planet. Their current copy function being annoyingly limited to only 15 buildings long was making me concerned that it won't and you'll have to put up with the pain of trying to split your builds into multiple blueprint pieces.
Do you know what format it is saving the blueprints in externally? The MultiBuild mod exported the blueprints as a plain text string you could just save to notepad and build your own library of designs. Which also made it super easy to share designs with others (the mod had its own website for people to share designs).

Wooh blueprints! I was getting worried for a minute! It looks like it went live at right about midnight their time, but hooray! I don't really have time to play until about 3 today so I'm good -- happy to see it's out today and I'm definitely starting up a new save this afternoon.

I'll have to test it out later. Number of buildings is irrelevant if the actual blueprinting build range ends up being too short for most "full MKIII belt capacity" factory sizes. Even a basic 4x30 smelter run for example is nearly 1200 "buildings" and extends beyond your build range.
Good to hear on the export functionality though.

There is no building range for blueprints and they don't even require you to have the stuff at hand. Anything that you don't have enough of in your inventory has a white ghost, anything that you can build right now has a green ghost.
When you enter BP-placing mode, you can move all over the planet and place it anywhere. You still have to go there and have to be in range for the drones to start building though.

See I look at stuff like that and then I look at my starter world, which could best be described as "but... why would you... what are you doing?", and I just despair :P

My starter worlds are always an utter mess of spaghetti and confusion until I reach ILS towers.
There will come a time when you finish the tech tree, start branching out more and more, and find yourself tearing down the obsolete parts of your home planet and start using it as just another specialised forge world, as you slowly start moving all the production lines off-world.
Hell, you don't even need to finish the entire tech tree. Just make sure you have interstellar logistics towers, the corresponding logistics vessels that can go into space, and that they are able to warp between systems. At that point you only need to put together a little production area that mass produces these towers and vessels, as well as al the most-used buildings (miners, smelter, assemblers, belts, sorters, power poles, etc, etc), and go nuts on the star-cluster.

Space Warpers don't use organic crystals. Manufacturing sulfuric acid for them needs oil, but it can be mined directly once you find a planet with acid oceans. Energetic graphite can always be made directly with coal if you don't have oil for X-Ray cracking.
The only things that actually require oil are purple science and MKIII assemblers because Particle Broadband needs Plastic.
Though sulfuric acid and organic crystals usually are the first two interstellar mining setups needed anyway, so it doesn't take much oil production to get to that point. If your production lines already use towers to gather acid vs direct belt, it doesn't take much of an initial supply of Warpers to get the remote acid supply going to eliminate the oil dependency on Warper production.

Decided to build a factory line with an index of parts that lets me pick out items to use for constructions via belts.
Honestly, feels like a waste of time. The output is not bad for structures, but it's practically zero for generating parts. Definitely would've been better to shoot for constructing conveyors, sat stations, and planetary/interplanetary towers with their vehicles, then done a bunch of decentralized products. This whole factory line is basically one massive custom construct and it would frankly be faaaar easier and more efficient to have huge outputs of each items dumping into interplanetary towers, then pull stuff out with local stations for whatever needs making.
Then I could be slapping down factories via blueprint instead of having to figure out routing of multiple items across increasingly-complicated production lines, and support those outputs easily by just setting down big prefab factories elsewhere as needed.
So I decided to get this and have sadly discovered I have the exact same problem with it as I do with Satisfactory. Which is after the most basic of stuff is in place, I get incredibly overwhelmed with so many options, and the nasty feeling that anything I do is inefficient and wrong, and I just give up.
I've been playing it in 15 minute chunks before the anxiety sets in and I stop for the day. Which of course means basically nothing is getting accomplished. I think this type of game just isn't for me.

I dont think the first time anybody plays this game they get it all right or even make something efficient. I still hand produced a bunch of stuff right up until I was on yellow or purple cubes on my first time through. You aren't going to be an expert and since the whole goal of the game is just to have fun and it isn't competitive in any way, so don't worry about being perfect. Just relax, have fun - you will learn more intricate details as you play.

I've been there before! Really you should take comfort in the fact that almost everyone's starter planet is a spaghetti mess, particularly when you're brand new and have no idea how the tech tree works.
It works fairly well, because you will eventually get off planet and find all sorts of neat, better planets that you can make super neat and clean once you get everything figured out. I'm restarting a new save, and even then there's only so much neatness you can accomplish with the starter techs. You have to get a little bit messy until you have all of the resources to get shuttleports and high speed conveyor belts and such either way.
The layouts you'll use also change pretty dramatically once you unlock planetary and interplanetary towers. You're no longer concerned about belts between various products since it all gets delivered by drones, so it can get pretty simplified and compact per product. It then switches to an issue of scale of production.

One nice thing in this game is there is an abundance of free space, so you can just ditch a planet and go to another one. There is almost no need to ever tear stuff down once tou go interstellar. Just move somewhere new. Its always easier to build new efficient designs than retooling an old one.
I did not realize how sorters worked. I thought you stuck them on the ends of belts. So, one miner, one smelter, a belt to connect them.
But that's not it at all. Brb completely dismantling everything and making a hundred more smelters.
Yeah, that could've slowed your production output just a tad.

Now that we have blueprints, the feature I want now is being able to create color-coded zones and name them, plus name (or at least annotate) planets and stars.
That way I can "paint" areas for what they make or gather at a glance without having to keep the incredibly busy-looking resource display on all the time.

Well, good news! They have added colored foundations (just click the checkerboard on the top right of the foundation icon) for you to color areas of the planet and if you just click on the name of the star or planet at the top of it's info panel when you have it selected in the Starmap (V) you can rename them to whatever you want.

Mining setups are definitely a more noticeable pain point now. I haven't seen any announcements, but I would assume something like a MKII miner would be in the plans. But seeing as they only recently added MKII smelters, who knows how far out.
There was a mod that added a MKII miner that had increased range, but I don't use it so not sure if it's compatible with the current version.
If you get enough research into mining efficiency, you can just make a standardized blueprint of miners in a square layout that is large enough to fit over almost all vein groups as they all tend to be around the same size. Using foundations to bury the one or two outlying veins that might be blocking the layout so you don't have to make the layout excessively big and thus more inefficient either. Being standardized, it wouldn't necessarily cover every vein in a group or have max vein coverage for every miner. But the efficiency upgrades eventually make that pretty moot, filling a full belt even covering just a couple veins. And as a blueprint it makes setting up new mines a lot faster than manually placing each one perfectly for max coverage.

You got the gist of it right there. Production lines start at a logistics tower and end at one.

That's the idea. Feed the tower with belts directly and/or set the tower to Demand the materials you need. Those items go out of the tower on belts to feed your smelters/assemblers for the product. And the finished product gets belted back into the tower set to Supply other towers. Basically tower drones start to replace all your belts between individual products.
So for example:
Copper pile -> Miners -> Tower A (Copper supply)
Iron pile -> Miners -> Tower B (Iron supply)
Tower C (Copper demand) -> Smelter lines (Copper ingot)-> Tower C (Copper ingot supply)
Tower D (Iron demand) -> Smelter lines (Iron ingot)-> Tower D (Iron ingot supply)
Tower E (Copper ingot demand, Iron ingot demand) -> Assembler lines (Circuit board) -> Tower E (Circuit board supply)
So there may be no belts between your mines, smelters, and assemblers, you can just let the drones handle all of the flow between towers A-E. This way you no longer have to worry about locality (having you smelters next to your mines for example) and you can better utilize the planet's building area and eliminate belt spaghetti.
Depending on how messy your current layout is, it may not even be worth the time to "incorporate" towers into your existing stuff vs simply building entire new production lines with the towers in mind since the layouts will need to change a lot. Then you just go back and delete all the old stuff to free up the land space if needed. Personally, I've already moved onto building on other planets well before I've felt the need to clean up any of the early game mess.

Biggest addition is the new Advanced Mining Machine, which can practically cover an entire group of veins with one machine.
Makes it much easier to set up an outpost and requires far less fiddling with regular miners and conveyors.
They also added something called a Proliferator, where you can either get a production speedup (up to 2x speed) or extra items (up to buy 4 get 1 free) with a consumable. Pretty nice as well, but the buildings are slightly buggy and require a bit a fiddling to get setup correctly. But late game trying to produce either white cubes or stuff for the dyson sphere they are a big help.
They've updated some of the effects as well.
They keep improving the game. Still pretty fun if you want something kinda engaging but not competitive.

I saw this thread and went to check my save to see what had changed.
Much to my chagrin the saves aren’t in the steam folder and when I built new computer last year, I lost my 100+ hour save. Back to scratch it is!
Getting the urge to start a new save, been a hot minute since I played. And even then I never got super far, didn't even make it to using Solar Sails, let alone making a sphere.
Yes, the advanced miners are amazing. Not only can you cover an entire patch with a single building, they also have a built in drone pad so you don't even need to belt stuff into a nearby tower. And if you have the power for it, you can even set them to use more power to extract minerals up to 3x their normal rate.
While it sucks to lose your save, the blueprinting system they've also added a while back will significantly reduce the time it would take to get back to the same level. You can even download blueprints (dysonsphereblueprints.com) others have made so you don't even have to spend the time doing the initial layouts. There are also now blueprints for the dyson sphere itself and for designing your mecha too on there. Which I highly recommend for the mecha as I've found the new editor for that, well, difficult to use would be generous, but other people have done some good work with it so far.

First, they're planning an update at the end of September that will let you build Logistics Distributors: An add-on to storage that will send bots to deliver items to other storage modules, or even straight to you while within range/on planet: No longer have to remember where you set the building chains for all conveyor belts and buildings, just the general area to get deliveries!
Also, Trailer for the Combat Update (which has been delayed to 2023), that they're calling "Rise of the Dark Fog"

Ooo, I was really enjoying this game but sorta ran out of puff once i started the stage where I just needed to clone patterns onto whole planets. I'm really looking forward to the combat update, hopefully put some changeable pressure on my systems to encourage customization rather than always using blueprints.
I was going to grab this, then I saw it was going to be on game pass soon. So that's exciting. Ill actually get to do a try before you buy.
One question though. Does this game kick the shit out of your computer when you start to get past midgame? Seems like there can be a lot going on and my rig isn't exactly top of the line.

The game only really slowed to a crawl past the fourth system I filled with industry with a 300GW Dyson sphere?(it has been a while I don't remember exactly). At 100 hours or so in a run. You can basically see everything the tech tree/game has to offer without leaving the home system and it still runs incredibly well at that point. With my modest pc build.

Well, Dyson sphere has always been go big or go home in regards to scale. Glad to see combat will be the same. I'm very interested to see how it turns out. I'd love to see planet buster tech and more space based stuff. Anybody ever play Planetary Annihilation? That would be fun.

Patch just dropped, blueprints are in the research tree now. Honestly kinda surprised, a blueprint can have six hundred facilities at level three. Level four let's you have three thousand facilities.
EDIT: Oh shit, this blueprint tool is nice. It looks like it saves the blueprints external to the game, so once you make a blueprint you can use it anywhere. And the facility selection tool is super-easy. This is fantastic!
Does it let you stamp down a blueprint that extends beyond your normal build range? The fantastic MultiBuild blueprinting mod from several months ago let you do that, so it worked even for those super long chem plant lines that wrap around the planet. Their current copy function being annoyingly limited to only 15 buildings long was making me concerned that it won't and you'll have to put up with the pain of trying to split your builds into multiple blueprint pieces.
Do you know what format it is saving the blueprints in externally? The MultiBuild mod exported the blueprints as a plain text string you could just save to notepad and build your own library of designs. Which also made it super easy to share designs with others (the mod had its own website for people to share designs).
I have no idea what the range limit is, but the top end of the blueprint research lets you have infinity facilities on a given blueprint. Even if that's just out to the mecha's limit, that a fuuuuuuckload of buildings.
No idea on the blueprint file type, but it's definitely saving external files so you should be able to pull them out of their folder and share them wherever. I only got to look at the blueprint system briefly, but I think there's also a text-based string generated from the blueprints as well.
I'll have to test it out later. Number of buildings is irrelevant if the actual blueprinting build range ends up being too short for most "full MKIII belt capacity" factory sizes. Even a basic 4x30 smelter run for example is nearly 1200 "buildings" and extends beyond your build range.
Good to hear on the export functionality though.
When you enter BP-placing mode, you can move all over the planet and place it anywhere. You still have to go there and have to be in range for the drones to start building though.

My starter worlds are always an utter mess of spaghetti and confusion until I reach ILS towers.
There will come a time when you finish the tech tree, start branching out more and more, and find yourself tearing down the obsolete parts of your home planet and start using it as just another specialised forge world, as you slowly start moving all the production lines off-world.
Hell, you don't even need to finish the entire tech tree. Just make sure you have interstellar logistics towers, the corresponding logistics vessels that can go into space, and that they are able to warp between systems. At that point you only need to put together a little production area that mass produces these towers and vessels, as well as al the most-used buildings (miners, smelter, assemblers, belts, sorters, power poles, etc, etc), and go nuts on the star-cluster.

The thing that's currently killing me (or at least my future planning) is that I think I've burned too many fossil fuels in my starting system to be able to viably set up a reliable warp fuel production.

Space Warpers don't use organic crystals. Manufacturing sulfuric acid for them needs oil, but it can be mined directly once you find a planet with acid oceans. Energetic graphite can always be made directly with coal if you don't have oil for X-Ray cracking.
The only things that actually require oil are purple science and MKIII assemblers because Particle Broadband needs Plastic.
Though sulfuric acid and organic crystals usually are the first two interstellar mining setups needed anyway, so it doesn't take much oil production to get to that point. If your production lines already use towers to gather acid vs direct belt, it doesn't take much of an initial supply of Warpers to get the remote acid supply going to eliminate the oil dependency on Warper production.

I guess it doesn't have cloud saves going yet and the PC I ordered in May finally came so the decision to start over was made for me :P
Honestly, feels like a waste of time. The output is not bad for structures, but it's practically zero for generating parts. Definitely would've been better to shoot for constructing conveyors, sat stations, and planetary/interplanetary towers with their vehicles, then done a bunch of decentralized products. This whole factory line is basically one massive custom construct and it would frankly be faaaar easier and more efficient to have huge outputs of each items dumping into interplanetary towers, then pull stuff out with local stations for whatever needs making.
Then I could be slapping down factories via blueprint instead of having to figure out routing of multiple items across increasingly-complicated production lines, and support those outputs easily by just setting down big prefab factories elsewhere as needed.
I've been playing it in 15 minute chunks before the anxiety sets in and I stop for the day. Which of course means basically nothing is getting accomplished. I think this type of game just isn't for me.
I dont think the first time anybody plays this game they get it all right or even make something efficient. I still hand produced a bunch of stuff right up until I was on yellow or purple cubes on my first time through. You aren't going to be an expert and since the whole goal of the game is just to have fun and it isn't competitive in any way, so don't worry about being perfect. Just relax, have fun - you will learn more intricate details as you play.
I've been there before! Really you should take comfort in the fact that almost everyone's starter planet is a spaghetti mess, particularly when you're brand new and have no idea how the tech tree works.
It works fairly well, because you will eventually get off planet and find all sorts of neat, better planets that you can make super neat and clean once you get everything figured out. I'm restarting a new save, and even then there's only so much neatness you can accomplish with the starter techs. You have to get a little bit messy until you have all of the resources to get shuttleports and high speed conveyor belts and such either way.

I did not realize how sorters worked. I thought you stuck them on the ends of belts. So, one miner, one smelter, a belt to connect them.
But that's not it at all. Brb completely dismantling everything and making a hundred more smelters.
Yeah, that could've slowed your production output just a tad.
That way I can "paint" areas for what they make or gather at a glance without having to keep the incredibly busy-looking resource display on all the time.
Well, good news! They have added colored foundations (just click the checkerboard on the top right of the foundation icon) for you to color areas of the planet and if you just click on the name of the star or planet at the top of it's info panel when you have it selected in the Starmap (V) you can rename them to whatever you want.
Some kind of set and forget would be really sweet; maybe like a floating planetary station that can mine one set of veins continuously. That would be nice
Mining setups are definitely a more noticeable pain point now. I haven't seen any announcements, but I would assume something like a MKII miner would be in the plans. But seeing as they only recently added MKII smelters, who knows how far out.
There was a mod that added a MKII miner that had increased range, but I don't use it so not sure if it's compatible with the current version.
If you get enough research into mining efficiency, you can just make a standardized blueprint of miners in a square layout that is large enough to fit over almost all vein groups as they all tend to be around the same size. Using foundations to bury the one or two outlying veins that might be blocking the layout so you don't have to make the layout excessively big and thus more inefficient either. Being standardized, it wouldn't necessarily cover every vein in a group or have max vein coverage for every miner. But the efficiency upgrades eventually make that pretty moot, filling a full belt even covering just a couple veins. And as a blueprint it makes setting up new mines a lot faster than manually placing each one perfectly for max coverage.
My current thinking is to stick a tower near some convenient basic materials, like copper and iron ingots, belt them into the drone tower, and have them fly the mats out to assemblers to crank them into more complex parts.
You got the gist of it right there. Production lines start at a logistics tower and end at one.

That's the idea. Feed the tower with belts directly and/or set the tower to Demand the materials you need. Those items go out of the tower on belts to feed your smelters/assemblers for the product. And the finished product gets belted back into the tower set to Supply other towers. Basically tower drones start to replace all your belts between individual products.
So for example:
Copper pile -> Miners -> Tower A (Copper supply)
Iron pile -> Miners -> Tower B (Iron supply)
Tower C (Copper demand) -> Smelter lines (Copper ingot)-> Tower C (Copper ingot supply)
Tower D (Iron demand) -> Smelter lines (Iron ingot)-> Tower D (Iron ingot supply)
Tower E (Copper ingot demand, Iron ingot demand) -> Assembler lines (Circuit board) -> Tower E (Circuit board supply)
So there may be no belts between your mines, smelters, and assemblers, you can just let the drones handle all of the flow between towers A-E. This way you no longer have to worry about locality (having you smelters next to your mines for example) and you can better utilize the planet's building area and eliminate belt spaghetti.
Depending on how messy your current layout is, it may not even be worth the time to "incorporate" towers into your existing stuff vs simply building entire new production lines with the towers in mind since the layouts will need to change a lot. Then you just go back and delete all the old stuff to free up the land space if needed. Personally, I've already moved onto building on other planets well before I've felt the need to clean up any of the early game mess.
So, I've been playing this some again and they've definitely changed things.
Biggest addition is the new Advanced Mining Machine, which can practically cover an entire group of veins with one machine.
Makes it much easier to set up an outpost and requires far less fiddling with regular miners and conveyors.
They also added something called a Proliferator, where you can either get a production speedup (up to 2x speed) or extra items (up to buy 4 get 1 free) with a consumable. Pretty nice as well, but the buildings are slightly buggy and require a bit a fiddling to get setup correctly. But late game trying to produce either white cubes or stuff for the dyson sphere they are a big help.
They've updated some of the effects as well.
They keep improving the game. Still pretty fun if you want something kinda engaging but not competitive.
I saw this thread and went to check my save to see what had changed.
Much to my chagrin the saves aren’t in the steam folder and when I built new computer last year, I lost my 100+ hour save. Back to scratch it is!

While it sucks to lose your save, the blueprinting system they've also added a while back will significantly reduce the time it would take to get back to the same level. You can even download blueprints (dysonsphereblueprints.com) others have made so you don't even have to spend the time doing the initial layouts. There are also now blueprints for the dyson sphere itself and for designing your mecha too on there. Which I highly recommend for the mecha as I've found the new editor for that, well, difficult to use would be generous, but other people have done some good work with it so far.
First, they're planning an update at the end of September that will let you build Logistics Distributors: An add-on to storage that will send bots to deliver items to other storage modules, or even straight to you while within range/on planet: No longer have to remember where you set the building chains for all conveyor belts and buildings, just the general area to get deliveries!
Also, Trailer for the Combat Update (which has been delayed to 2023), that they're calling "Rise of the Dark Fog"
Basically, 1st Gen attempt at building Dyson Spheres to support Earth were Von Neuman AI, which went pretty much the same way it goes in basically every other setting. By the way they're describing it, it sounds like the way the Dark Fog acts is very similar to how it works in AI War, where its behavior is determined by a Threat Level assessment based on your progress that you'll have some way to influence, and on top of difficulty settings they've confirmed both a "Peace Mode" where the Dark Fog remains passive until you directly attack it, as well as the ability to disable it altogether if that isn't your thing.
Ooo, I was really enjoying this game but sorta ran out of puff once i started the stage where I just needed to clone patterns onto whole planets. I'm really looking forward to the combat update, hopefully put some changeable pressure on my systems to encourage customization rather than always using blueprints.
One question though. Does this game kick the shit out of your computer when you start to get past midgame? Seems like there can be a lot going on and my rig isn't exactly top of the line.
